I have now been able to boot the system using another drive. The original boot drive (hda7) can be mounted successfully with the following fstab configuration: /dev/hda7 /data2 reiserfs noauto,user 0 0 When reiserfsck /data2 is run I get the following messages: reiserfs_open: bread failed reading block 16 reiserfs_open: bread failed reading block 2 reiserfs_open: neither new nor old reiserfs format found on /data2 reiserfsck: --rebuild-sb may restore reiserfs super block What are the ramifications of running this? Is this something that can cause the data on the disk to be lost? Thanks for any help, Mike

Help! System booting as readonly

While away on business I lost the ability to ssh into my computer. I had my wife ping it from within the home network and she was unable to. After walking her through some ifconfig diagnostics (she is a technically challanged individual) I next had her reboot the box in the hope that it would "fix" the problem. It did not solve the problem. Now that I am home I see that it is mounting the drives as readonly. The following is a partial listing of the dmesg: kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k scsi_hostadapter, errno = 2 VFS: Mounted root (reiserfs filesystem) readonly Trying to move old root to /initrd ... failed Unmounting old root clm-6006: writing inode 927 on readonly FS clm-6006: writing inode 927 on readonly FS clm-6005: writing inode 927 on readonly FS clm-6006: writing inode 927 on readonly FS clm-6006: writing inode 927 on readonly FS clm-6005: writing inode 927 on readonly FS How do I go about diagnosing and fixing this problem? REMINDER: Meeting on Wednesday, June 18th

Hi everybody, The next WLUG meeting will be on Wednesday, June 18th in a different place. This time, we're in Olin Hall room 107 (the big lecture hall on the left on the first floor of Olin Hall). More detailed directions are available on the WLUG website. The meeting time is the usual 7:00 PM. A couple of people had mentioned an interest in addressing WLUG, but I currently don't have a definite commitment for a speaker for this meeting. I would therefore llke to use this as a planning meeting to decide what activities the group would like to pursue over the next few months. Perhaps these folks would like to make a commitment for a future WLUG meeting (if so, please contact me directly). I'll bring some light refreshments. 530 TLS subsystem failed.

Hi all, I've just re-compilled all the system's need such as openssl, php and its need, etc. Here, I got a problem like this : [root@voyager named]# ftp 192.168.21.22 Connected to 192.168.21.22 (192.168.21.22). 530 TLS subsystem failed. ftp> Can you please inform me what was wrong with this ? Is it a kind of problem which caused by openssl upgrade ? How can I solve this ? In fact, I get a slow connection too when accessing local mail using browser. I can send and receive mail fast using outlook. Thanks.

whois question

Is there a way to do a whois search for a registrants name, and get all the domains registered in that name? I checked the RIPE help file (whois -h whois.ripe.net HELP), but I don't understand it. I figure there's some way to do an inverse search with the -i switch, but it's not doing what I want it to do. Thanks. Greg

Well, I may be a total goober here and everyone else knows this, but if you use VNC try switching to TightVNC (www.tightvnc.org) ... I just upgraded my client & server from the AT&T implementation, and the performance gain I got is incredible. -Marc

CD/DVD-ROM question

I just noticed that my boot message tells me that my CD-ROM and CDRW drives are also DVD-ROM. I wasn't aware that either of them had that capability when I bought them. All those spam messages about reading DVD from my CD-ROM went in the trash without being read, so now I'm wondering. Is it possible to read a DVD on a CD drive? If so, how? If not, why does the boot message say that? Thanks. Greg

Flaky disks or controller?

HI Everybody, Having recently rebuilt my "good" computer, I'm now seeing a bunch of disk I/O errors in my system log. I have 3 SCSI disks connected to a Symbios controller using the sym53c8xx module and a 2.4.20 kernel. At first, I suspected an individual drive, as it is nearly 4 years old, and all of the errors were there. I have since physically removed that drive, and now the other drives are logging errors rather sporatically. Typically, I see an error message from reiserfs about how it couldn't write to the drive, and a disk I/O error in the log. The system is then wedged and requires a reboot. With the problem showing up on all 3 SCSI drives, I'm now suspicious of the (used) controller which I received as a "present" from a guy at work. If it should be the controller, do you folks have recommendations about reasonably priced SCSI controllers? I have 6 SCSI devices in my system and I need 68-pin as well as 50-pin capabilities. One of my disks is U160, and I think the others are slower, but with disks always getting faster, I'd probably want a U160 controller. I don't think I want to pay the premium for a U320 controller. Linux and wireless 802.11b

I haven't had any luck getting a Netgear MA401 802.11b PCMCIA card working. I'm using RH 7.3 (2.4.18 kernel). I rebuilt the kernel to turn on support for the card, but I can't get a connection to my access point (a Netgear WG602). The kernel boots and tries to start the eth0 interface, which doesn't exist, since there's no CAT5 cable pluggeg into the ethernet port. The output of ifconfig shows the only interface that's up is the loopback (lo) interface. I have an HP Pavilion zt1180 laptop. Is there anything else I need to do? rpm problems

when i do rpm --rebuilddb it hangs. I have to do a kill -9 to fix it. I can't install any rpm's If i reboot my box I can use RPM again. however only to install one rpm. After that, i must reboot again to use another rpm. Old drive - new machine?

I have a RedHat 7.3 server that is sick. It would appear that there are all kinds of hard disk errors but I don't think its the hard drive because its done it with two new hard drives. I'm guessing its the on-motherboard disk controller. It will boot up okay, but after a (steadily decreasing) amount of time the errors begin again and the hard drive light stays on. The question is: the motherboard is an old Socket-7 AT Epox which I can't replace exactly -- what are the issues involved with swapping the drive (which I believe is okay) into a new machine with a different motherboard, without reloading RH 7.3 or my data?

NEW Pioneer DVD-RW A05 for sale

Folks, Ever made a mistake? I did. I purchased a new DVD-RW drive to replace the unit I thought was defective. After the unit arrived (Thursday) I subsequently trace the problem to an intermittent IDE cable. I'd like to sell the new one if anyone's in the market. The A05 is a 4X drive, and I paid $225.00. for it. I'd be happy to sell it for a reduced price of $200.00 if anyone's interested. Thanks, Skip

http load generators

Does anyone have any recommendations of open source tools for generating very high volume http traffic simulating large numbers of clients form multiple IP addresses? I did a search on sourceforge and most of the projects have not released any new code in 18 months or more - so not sure of status on most of them. I need to test an application that uses HTTP as its transport layer (but not HTML) so open source tools would allow the customizations I need, with out haveing to write everything from scratch.

scanner help

I have a new Epson 1660 scanner, and I'm having difficulty getting it working with the sane drivers. Here's what I have thus far... 1. lsusb worked immediately. Device Descriptor: <snip> Bus 001 Device 003: ID 03f0:0317 Hewlett-Packard Device Descriptor: <snip> (I recently unloaded & loaded the USB & printer modules, and the device numbers for the printer (HP) and scanner (Epson) changed.) 2. sane-find-scanner: found USB scanner (vendor = 0x04b8, product = 0x011e) at device /dev/usb/scanner0 This did not work until I added this to the /etc/modules.conf file and modprobe'd "scanner": options scanner vendor=0x04b8 product=0x011e 3. My /etc/sane.d/epson.conf file has: usb /dev/usb/scanner0 (Is that right? I did try some other devices) I also tried usb 0x04b8 0x011e No luck 4. I chmod'd (666) /dev/usb/scanner*. 5. xsane always fails. Here are some of the messages. > xsane no devices available > xsane epson:/dev/usb/scanner0 Failed to open device 'epson:/dev/usb/scanner0': Operation not supported. Any suggestions? TIA, Bill P.S. Xfer mail from Outlook to...

Anyone out there know how to get email out of Outlook/Exchange and into something else? I use outlook at work, and also at home when doing stuff for work, but want to get all that stuff into a flat file similar to what UNIX uses (used?), which is also similar to what Eudora uses. In other words, I want to get away from Outlook/exchange all together and get into a format that is easily manipulated by scripts or easily imported into other email applications. Clarification: location of next meeting

Computer 4 sale

Dual PIII 1ghz Case + power 512mb ram 2 Hard Drives - 16gig + 8gig (or about that size) Sony IDE CDRW (fast, I think 48x,24x,16x) Ensoniq 5880 AudioPCI Ethernet card $400 There will be 2 big gaping holes in the front if I can't find the 5 1/4 drive bay covers. No video card. Also, nVidia geForce 3 and above cards don't work with this motherboard. nVidia blames it on Tyan, and Tyan blames it on nVidia. My Radeon 7550 works just fine (but you don't get that). If you want, I have an old voodoo3 card which was in this at one point, it worked then, you can have it for free with the computer. Under Windows, I was never able to get USB working well (keyboard was fine, camera + mouse weren't). Under linux, usb worked 100%, so I'm assuming it's just my luck with windows and not the hardware. I will be wiping the drives clean before selling it, so you're on your own for an OS. I think one of the drives may be mounted "creatively" so be forewarned. If anyone wants it, hopefully we can arrange a drop-off & pickup, perhaps at a wlug meeting to avoid any shipping. Please send replies to me, and not the list. -Marc
