Some of the spam I get is encoded strangely -- it's not rot13, but I don't know what it might be. Nothing in xemacs seems to work on it. Not that I _really_ care about reading the spam, but I am curious. samba issue

Hi all... I created a directory, on my RH 9.0 (2.4.20) Linux server, that I would like to share with other computers on our LAN. I have smb and nmb running and I can see the share from a MS windows 2000 box. When I try to map the drive and click on the remote folder name (\\linux-hostname\share-name), it asks me to log on to the Linux server (I'm using security = share in /etc/samba/smb.conf). When I enter my username/password pair, it tells me that they're invalid. I have identical usernames & passwords on both boxes and I'm not encrypting the usernames and passwords...yet. We could also have a distribution bake off if we wanted as well. We did this before and it worked really well. If we have a BSD head in the crowd, they could demo [Open|Free|Net]BSD as well. I think as a follow-up to this, we could have a separate meeting that would be entirely focused on securing BAD/linux. I think it would be disingenuous to not only the students of WPI, but also tech guys in WPI to let a bunch of people loose on the network with easily rootable machines. That's my 0.018441 Euros. Crypto filesystem

Does anyone have experience with an encrypted filesystem? I have a notebook with a good chunk of confidential data, and although I would be really pissed off if I lost it ($$$), I'd be even more pissed off not knowing that my personal and corporate data may or may not have been found. So if anyone knows the answers, I have some questions: 1. Is loop-aes the way to go? Sounds pretty simple and painless to me. 2. What's your opinion of the optimal security/CPU tradeoff? I have an 800ish MHz Crusoe. So, I'll play around and probably figure out the answers by myself, but if anyone can jumpstart me (such as "Don't use funkyfish128, because that can be easily exploited!") that would be appreciated. If anyone's interested, I'll report the results of my adventure when I know something. Thanks! -Chuck

Query regarding email applications...

Hi all! I am currently using mozilla 1.3.1 and want to be able to move my email to other applications. I'd like to be able to move it to Netscape, Eudora, and yes, Outlook. The reason for this is to show my new department head why folks using different operating systems, say Linux, should be allowed to use different operating systems as well as different email applications. His only concern is "email compatibility". Now, once upon a time, it was really easy to move the files between Netscape and Eudora, for example. They both had simple files that contained the information (e.g., Eudora used to use .toc of the index, and .mbx for the actual email while Netscape use to use - well, I can't remember, but is was a similar flat file arrangement). So, I took a quick look at Eudora 5.1, and it looks like the familiar old setup. Mozilla 1.3.1 looks like it is using a database of some sort (.sdb?) and Netscape 7.1 looks, well, different from what I remember! In the good old days, I could figure this out in a few minutes and would have replicated my email across all of these apps! the last time I did this was about 3 years ago as a demonstration of the very same point. Sigh! So, I decided to see how the import capabilities look and, well, they don't play well, as far as I can tell. Outlook and Eudora have no idea about Mozilla, and it doesn't look like Netscape does either. The point to all this is the following question: I have a boss who is predisposed to setting up Linux for those in his department who are interested (he might be as well). He wants to be able to "import & export" between Outlook and whatever on whatever. Is there a way to show him that he can have his cake and eat it too, either by moving files, or by using more than one email application as an intermediary (e.g., Mozilla -> Outlook Express -> Eudora)? ssh woes followup

Also... From both machines, I can scp to an external machine. These 2 boxes I'm having problems with are on opposite sides of an intracompany vpn. Could I be having problems with the vpn? The VPN is a big-expensive end to end hardware solution that I don't get to play with. If it were that, any ideas on how I could prove that to corporate IT? Please note... it's possible that the vpn has nothing to do with the problem. -Marc

SSH doesn't like me.

So I use rsync over ssh to copy up & down a lot of stuff nighlty between servers. On Monday, it all went to crap and won't work anymore. The rsync's just never finish. So I went ahead and tried to use scp to copy the stuff over manually.. and now IT times out! It transfers about 168KB, then goes "STALLED". If I have a file smaller than 168kb, it goes through the entire progress-meter, but then scp hangs, never returns, and the file it supposedly copied up is 0 length. No special parameters on the scp or anything, but I do get a weird message: scp * hughesm@apollo.tomsnyder.com:/data/www/htdocs/playtesting/ In my syslog... I don't anything weird. I've restarted ssh (making sure ALL the sshd processes died), I've killed off all the rsync processes. Interactive ssh seems to work fine. Production machines that can't really be rebooted. More SCSI hard drive woes

HI everybody, I recently sent a SCSI drive back to Hitachi for warranty replacement. In the interim, I purchased a Maxtor replacement drive. It has been working fine for about 2 weeks, and now this new drive is tossing read errors at me(!). Did I just get (un)lucky, or could something in my system be causing this? Some have suggested checking the power supply. I've run memtest and it passed for a 12 hour test. I've swapped ports on the 2-port SCSI card. I'm at a loss as to why this continues to occur. Andy, thank you for the excellent talk and demo. The tools available to the linux community are top notch. The LTSP project is a prime example of that fact. I would like to suggest a talk on the OpenVPN project for the next meeting. I think it would be really cool if WLUG could sponser a project this winter that involved setting up a network w/ VPN, securing it and then attempting to hack it to find its vulnerabilities. This is probably a naive idea for many reasons...but I think many of us would be interested in learning the proper way of installing, securing, and maintaining our networks. From the WLUG home page, scroll down and click the link for "Past Meeting Information". For those of you who were unable to attend, I dare say you missed a good meeting. There were alot of questions and people really seemed interested in the topic. Fortunately, my client computer booted off of my laptop server just like it did when I left home. I even went out on a limb and attempted to get Doug Waud's computer working as a client, since the "live demo" concept seems to be a popular feature of WLUG meetings. I hadn't seen Doug's computer previously, but he did bring the proper network boot floppy. I "got Doug-ed" the first time (you've got to watch your cables and power cords around Doug) by a network cable that wasn't entirely plugged in. By the third attempt, his client booted with minor video artifacts, probably due to not using the correct XFree86 software. I'm soliciting ideas for the next meeting, which will be the first meeting of the year with the new crop of WPI students. I hope to have a great meeting planned so that the WPI students will continue to attend, as they constitute a sizeable percentage of the WLUG membership. I'll demonstrate (live!) how a Pentium 90 with 48 MB of memory and a 10 Mbps ethernet connection could be used effectively as an LTSP client, running any Linux program that is installed on the server. I've also got a couple of those Linux Format magazines for raffle (one with a CD, the other with a DVD). I'll have sodas and cookies also for refreshments. After the meeting, we'll make our monthly pilgrimage to the Boynton Restaurant for pizza and beers. All are welcome to attend. There is no admission fee for admittance to a WLUG meeting.
