This time the topic is an introduction to Linux for network professionals. ACM Installfest

The Worcester Area Student Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery will be hosting an Installfest on March 27th from 6-9PM. It will be on WPI Campus in Higgins Lab 116. Veterans and newbies to Linux are welcome! If you are an experienced user, we will start setting up at 5PM, and you are welcome to show up then. We will be advertising heavily around campus, so hopefully we can attract some new users! We will be distributing and installing Mandrake, Debian, Knoppix, and Gentoo, although more distributions are certainly welcome. Hi everybody, This is a reminder about the upcoming WLUG meeting, to be held at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, February 25, 2004 at the usual place (the Access Grid room, WPI campus, Worcester, MA USA). Detailed directions can be found on the WLUG webpage. At this meeting, our featured speaker is J.D. "Illiad" Frazer, the author of the comic strip UserFriendly. You can read the comic strip at http:// www.userfriendly.org. There are more details, such as biographical information, and an explanation of the comic strip's characters, linked from the WLUG home page. This meeting will be broadcast onto the Access Grid. For those who don't know, the Access Grid can be considered to be video conferencing on steroids. Read more about it at this site: http://www.accessgrid.org. I'm not sure, but I think the Boynton Restaurant is still undergoing major renovations and is thus closed. In that event, we can probably go to the mexican place (Tortilla Sams, I think its called). I just saw this on one of the other lists I'm on and I'm testing it out and it seems to work. http://shfs.sourceforge.net/ It lets you mount a remote filesystem over an SSH link. ala mount -t shfs root@someserver /mnt/localmntpnt Very cool. Tim.

Hi. I bought a Ximeta Netdisk (http://ximeta.com/products/netdisk.html) which is an external HDD with both USB and network connectivity. The company explicitly states that the device works with Red Hat 8 and 9, but I've had no luck with it. The drivers are available only as RPMs, no source provided. It's network attached, but it doesn't use a standard protocol. The RPM is supposed to install two modules, nd.o and lpx.o, but they don't show up with lsmod. When I try to load them with insmod or modprobe, I get a bunch of error messages about "unresolved symbols". I though it may have been a dependency problem, so I recompiled to load network block device (nbd.o), but that had no effect. I've tried both RH 8 and 9 fresh stock installs with the same results. Ximeta has stated that they will provide me a new driver, but I'm not holding my breath. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Setiathome is a good distributed program http://www.setiathome.com as well as gimps (can't remember the url). Seti is the Search for ExtraTerrestrial Life(be verry verry quiet, I'm hunting for aliens, huhuhuh). And GIMPs is the Great Internet Marsene Prime search (so we can keep having better encryption and such). I have two machines using Gentoo that also have distcc servers running on them. I also have a couple other friends that also use gentoo and would like to use a larger distcc network. Hello, all. My name's Carlton and I figured this is probally the best place to post this note. My friends and I have recently got distcc working (a distributed compiler using gcc-3.3.2). We've currently got 7 (maybe 8?) computers running the distcc daemon right now. Basically, when any one of us compiles something the processess are distributed amongst the computers on the network running distcc. So, my question is, is anyone interested in joining our little group? I figure the more linboxes the merrier. We are also in the process of setting up a couple of G5's with cross compiling on distcc so any Mac guys out there are welcome to (but Linux/BSD guys are most welcome ^_^). Feel free to reply, sageman(a)wpi.edu, if you are interested. We are also looking at getting some other stuff distributed if at all possible but really haven't started looking anywhere yet. how to setup wireless network for WPI campus

hi, everyone. I am trying to config my linux laptop so I can use wireless connection on campus. However, it is not easy. I modified some script file and added the SSID and WEP info into it. However, it still didn't work. Anyone have some idea or experience about this? thanks

Building your own up2date server...

My suggestion is use a gentoo live cd (go with x86 no stages). There is also another option. If you have another computer you can burn a copy of knopix. Once you create the cd, you insert it into the CDROM drive, boot from CDROM to a nice KDE GUI and all partitions are automatically mounted. Click on the partition that has the needed info and you are good to go. It may sound complicated but Knopix has a really fine User Interface. (If you don't have a CDROM you can do the same thing with Tomsrbtb from a floppy) Then when you want to create a boot disk you can open a command window, mount the root partition and then do "chroot /mnt/rootPartition". From there you can run lilo or mkbootdisk. Good luck. RedHat 7.1 boot floppy

Hi All, My desktop has 2 hard drives, one with Windows, one with Linux. By inserting the floppy, it boots Linux. Unfortunately, the floppy just stopped working (I get the Linux prompt, but then booting reports disk failure) for some reason. I need to retrieve several files on the Linux hard drive. Looking for linux work estimate

Hiall! I have a Dell P4 server running RH8, Apache, Samba & sendmail (et al.), on a network with several other operating systems, and a broadband connection. Things I might require help with: 1. Samba config 2. Apache config 3. Disable sendmail, inst/conf tcpserver and qmail 4. Some general Linux admin questions 5. Some special-project-related things 6. Possibly ditching RH8 and moving to YD or Debian If there's anyone who would be interested in helping me out a little, enough to at least identify the main problems, I'd appreciate it greatly. Anti spam filters now active on wlug list

While at first glance it may appear that the WLUG list never contains any spam, this due to the fact that the list is closed - any emails coming from an address that is not subscribed to the list are held for approval by a moderator, ie, me. In reality, the WLUG list does get a fair amount of spam, sometimes ten or twenty on a bad day. In an effort to not have to deal with this manually, the WLUG list will now use the X-Perlmx-Spam header that is added by the WPI spam filter. Hopefully this will mean that the only messages I have to worry about manually approving are legitimate emails from people who for whateve reason aren't subscribed properly. Recommened QUIET cdrw/dvd drives?

Hi all, Does anyone has a recommendatio on a nice quiet CD-R/CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive? I see that newegg.com has a Lite-On and a Sony for sale today, both under $50 which seems like a steal. Sounds like a good thing since my SCSI CDRW drive is finally biting the bullet and acting flaky. One requirement is that the drive is quiet. I hate those CDROM drives which sound like jet engines on startup and then just click and whir and sound really loud all the time when running. I especially hate it when they spin up and down constantly. I'd rather have it just spin all the time if possible, or at least not spin down quite so quickly. The two I'm looking at are: Lite On 48x24x48x16 Combo Drive, Model LTC48161H, Retail Sony 48x24x48x16 Combo Drive, Model CRX300E/A, OEM I'm leaning towards the Lite-On one, since it comes with Burner software which my Wife can use (I plan on getting two of these BTW) while I'm happy with Linux in the basement. :] John

I actually have bought two of those (the Lite-On) and no complaints here.
