External Harddrive Cases and Such

I was thinking of setting up a cron job to backup certain files to the external harddrive. Right now I have a RAID 5 system set up but think this is overkill; additionally, an external harddrive makes sharing between computers that aren't on a network much easier and is mobile to go with my laptop (setting up my laptop to play oggs through my car stereo is something I plan on doing, and instead of backing up my music collection on the laptop I could simply do it on the external harddrive and get a power inteverter to power it via the cigarette lighter plug). Additionally, I can just do striping over my harddrives instead of RAID 5'ing them and increase the preformance (why not? hehe). I was thinking about doing the external harddrive case deal but for backup at least this doesn't seem like a good alternative, since the external harddrive is only $20 more and the external harddrive case is much more than that. In less you plan on buying four or more harddrives to swap into the case, its not really cost effective. As for the long run, an external harddrive case isn't viable anywho, since a couple years from now its going to be nothing compared to the new ones, plus external harddrive technology will advance and speed up tremendously; look at Firewire 800 right now, already out, and one sees that 'investing' in an external harddrive case just doesn't pay out. Just my $.02.

Well, before seeing this email, I bought ANSI Common Lisp off amazon the other day and it just came him; reading through it now! I looked at a history of lisp somewhere (I think in a link in the Common Lisp Hypertext, of which I was directed to from reviews on amazon) and heard Scheme described as basically a Pascal equivalent of Scheme in the sense that it was designed to teach, not to use. Of course, knowing nothing about Lisp and its dialects, I believed this, having the new 1000-level CS class that teaches Scheme seem also to point in that direction; hearing your feelings concerning Scheme, however, makes it seem as though I have been misinformed (alas, the curse of the internet!). Well, I'm teaching myself Common Lisp now, anywho. The book I got was highly recommended, both as an introductory Lisp book and as a great reference for Common Lisp. The book is put out by Prentice Hall as part of there Series In Artificial Intelligence, and being that that is what drew me to teaching myself Lisp in the first place, seems like a good place to start. I'll check out one of the local university libraries here (I'm in lower Rhode Island, by the way) and see if I can pick up some of those books you've mentioned. Thank you all very much.

Books Of Lisp

Hi. Well, I figure since Lisp is such an important language, especially in GNU/Linux systems (favorite of Stallman afterall) I should pose this question to this group. Basically I'm interested in learning Lisp and was wondering if anyone has some favorite or recommended books that describe the syntax of Lisp. Additionally books related to introductory artificial intelligence work, with algorithms, design issues, et cetera, especially books with example Lisp code would be very welcome. NFS filesystem no longer mounts

remote burning

Anyone know if there's a way to control a cdrw on a win98 box from my linux box? With Samba, I can mount and read any of the drives on the win box, but I want to be able to burn. How do I list this remote burner as a device in linux so that I can use it? I tried cdrecord -scanbus dev=ATAPI, but it only looks locally. Is there some way to link a block device to a target on another machine? Don't ask why I want to do this. "Because it's there" is probably the best answer I can give. Or at least I think it's there. This definitely isn't what you're trying to accomplish, but if you have DirectCD or something similar installed on the Windows system (which lets you access the writeable CD like a fixed disk), you could share it with write access, and dump files onto it and manipulate it like a hard disk via Samba. The CD could then be removed and used on any system that could understand that format, which I believe is anything with DirectCD, or a Linux box with UDF support (I could be wrong, but I thought that used packet writing). You wouldn't be able to close the disc from Linux or write an ISO file like you could with something you have direct access to, though, as previously mentioned. Brian J. Dell Dimension 270GX... stuck on sound...

So, Generally, I don't ask for help in these matters, I just grind it out and figure out the problem, but I'm just stuck. I've got this nice shiny new dell here and everything works great, duel monitors, USB, gigE, the works, except for the sound. Looking in /proc/pci I see it shows the audio card as... "Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801EB AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 2)." Now, it shows the card as being supported and it looks like ALSA is loading a gackle of drivers (and I checked and they've been unmuted...) yet no sound. (Yes, I did check to make sure I had the speakers plugged into the right jack...) Has anybody had any experience getting this sound card to work? Note: It is integrated... I'll continue to probe the deep waters (i.e. Google) for answers... Thanks, Tim.

High-speed access questions

It seems like most of the providers say that you need windows or mac to use their DSL or cable internet. Does this just mean they won't offer tech support for linux, or does it mean that it won't work? I'm planning on using a router and having two computers connected. Has anyone had luck with linux and Verizon DSL? They're down to $35/month, and they give you the modem. Anyone know of better deals? Thanks. Greg

generic windows printer driver for postscript?

I have a windows-only (sigh) program that prints maps. It doesn't have a print-to-file option, so I add a "file" printer in windows printer setup. Can any give me a recommendation for a generic (clean) postscript printer driver? My intent is to print to a samba file share on linux and review the postscript print file with gv to select specific pages. The HP driver doesn't make nice postscript. Thanks, Bill

CRT or LCD ?

HI all, My 9 year old Nokia 447X CRT monitor appears to be on its way out. At maximum brightness and contrast, I can't get a good picture. I'm using xgamma to crank up the colors, but that creates a washed out display. The picture size wavers and occasionally goes out of sync. I think I got my $1000 worth out of this monitor! At the risk of starting a religious war, I'm wondering if I can get some objective commentary regarding CRT vs LCD and any issues there might be with Linux. I would like a display that can do at least 1280x1024@75Hz and possibly up to 1600x1200@75Hz. I think that puts me in the 18" - 19" monitor category, which is OK with me (I have a 17" monitor now). I occasionally play games but mostly its text, websurfing, email, and some photo editing. Does the LCD quality degrade when using the VGA input vs. the DVI input (assuming that the monitor has both) ? Are there any major Linux related issues when using the DVI output of a video card ? Reminder: Upcoming meeting

HI Everybody, This coming Thursday, June 17th, will be our next WLUG meeting, to be held at the usual place at 7:00 PM. At this meeting, we have the unusual benefit of having two speakers. First, I will give a short talk about the "bootsplash" software and how it can liven up your session while the computer boots. You can read more about it at http://www.bootsplash.org. This software has been used by the last several SuSE Linux releases, but it also works with other distributions. If you want to jazz up your computer display while the machine boots, this is the software you want to install. After that, I'll give the floor to John Rulnick, who asked to address the WLUG memebership. John's short talk will be about a weekend program he is involved with launching at Bay Path College. email sending problem with comcast

HI all, This is driving me nuts...I still have that problem where I get intermittent failures while sending email, even after hard coding the IP number for smtp.comcast.net (they normally have 4 different IPs...I hard coded one to make debug easier). Does anybody know the SMTP protocol sufficiently that they could help me debug this problem ? I have ethereal traces - one when it works, and another when it doesn't. Ok, I'm using 2.4. Yes, ACPI is more recent than APM....I tried 2.6 once and stuff worked oddly, so I went back to 2.4 (2.4 gentoo-sources as opposed to ck-2.6 for all you gentoo buffs). When the user invokes the hibernate mode (suspend to disk) the software writes its info into the swap file, and then the machine powers off. When the machine is later powered on and starts to boot, a parameter is passed to the kernel which tells it to look at the swap file. If the swap file has valid "hibernate info" in it, the machine will resume that state, otherwise it will perform a normal boot sequence. I'm pretty sure I'm using ACPI, which is (I believe) a more recent standard than APM. Check to see what your hardware supports.
