invincible processes

I just had some strange stuff happen to my SuSE 8.2 installation - it's stalling when I try to copy files and run some programs. If I try to kill the process, it doesn't go away (kill -9 pid, as root), and the machine won't shut down because stuff is still running. This coincidentally happened the same day that I started to prepare a replacement hard drive, so it's not on a critical installation (in fact, it's going to be wiped), but I'd still like to know what's going on. Note that I totally disconnected this drive when I was installing on the new one, just to make sure I didn't do anything to hurt it. Any ideas on what this could be or where to look would be appreciated. Greg

Flowchart software

Does anyone know of any decent flow chart software for linux besides Dia or Kivio. Kivio is nice, however it's inability to export to a png or to be copy and pasted into star office makes it useless for me. Dia just doesn't cut it. Anyone know of anything? Encrypted USB pen drive

Has anyone configured an encrypted usb pen drive under linux? I'm not talking about encrypting single files, but being able to mount the pen drive as an encrypted device? I've look at loop-aes, but I'm curious is anyone has done this before and might give some pointers. [OT] Introduction

Hi all. I wanted to quickly introduce myself. I just recently subscribed to the list and wanted to do a bit more than lurk. I hope to make a LUG meeting in the near future also. I don't want to waste too much bandwidth so I'll keep this short. If anyone is going up to the Ottawa Linux Symposium this month, maybe we can catch up and make some introductions, for everyone else, I look forward to meeting you all the LUG meeting. As I side note, I read the archives and wanted to second the idea for a "distro debate" LUG meeting. I think that would be really interesting to see what everyone runs and why. Open Source CMS?

Hi. I have a consulting client that is a non-profit in the midst of an IT management change. They have been seeking a good content management system for some time, but have not been seriously considering open source solutions for that need in spite of my cajoling them into that direction, in spite of the fact that the majority of their current web solution is built on Linux/Apache/PHP/MySQL/etc. The main objection has been a lack of knowledge of any providers of a full-service CMS solution: sizing, integration, training, implementation, etc., which is something one can pretty much take for granted when dealing with proprietary CMSes. So what I'm seeking are pointers to open source content management integrators (either houses or experienced individual consultants) who can show a proven, referenceable list of happy clients for whom they've provided a full-service CMS solution. I've played with Mambo (openmambo.org) and openeffect. There is a website that has a bunch of CMSs up with admin passwords so you can play around (the CMS sites go back to default every 15 minutes). I think I'll try to "sacrifice" my FC1 system to play with this... :D Although the package said that the contents were time-sensitive material (and each disc says that it is an Evaluation Software DVD-ROM), there was no indication in the README file of when anything (like the licenses) would expire. Hot Swap Drives on a Inspiron 9100

I just got a nice new Inspiron 9100 for work (a huge beast I might add) and I just installed Fedora Core 2 on it. I'm curious if anyone has any links or experience in how to make it so I can hot swap the drives (dvd burner, cd-rom, floppy, extra battery) without having to reboot. External Harddrive Cases and Such

I've read in howtos and in the kernel that you need to enable SCSI to access external USB 2.0/Firewire harddrives, and I assume that the Maxtor OneTouch will go off without a hitch. Right now you can get a 300 GB one off newegg for roughly $270, which is only about $20 more than the internal one. I was thinking of setting up a cron job to backup certain files to the external harddrive. Right now I have a RAID 5 system set up but think this is overkill; additionally, an external harddrive makes sharing between computers that aren't on a network much easier and is mobile to go with my laptop (setting up my laptop to play oggs through my car stereo is something I plan on doing, and instead of backing up my music collection on the laptop I could simply do it on the external harddrive and get a power inteverter to power it via the cigarette lighter plug). Additionally, I can just do striping over my harddrives instead of RAID 5'ing them and increase the preformance (why not? hehe). I was thinking about doing the external harddrive case deal but for backup at least this doesn't seem like a good alternative, since the external harddrive is only $20 more and the external harddrive case is much more than that. In less you plan on buying four or more harddrives to swap into the case, its not really cost effective. As for the long run, an external harddrive case isn't viable anywho, since a couple years from now its going to be nothing compared to the new ones, plus external harddrive technology will advance and speed up tremendously; look at Firewire 800 right now, already out, and one sees that 'investing' in an external harddrive case just doesn't pay out. Just my $.02.

Well, before seeing this email, I bought ANSI Common Lisp off amazon the other day and it just came him; reading through it now! I looked at a history of lisp somewhere (I think in a link in the Common Lisp Hypertext, of which I was directed to from reviews on amazon) and heard Scheme described as basically a Pascal equivalent of Scheme in the sense that it was designed to teach, not to use. Of course, knowing nothing about Lisp and its dialects, I believed this, having the new 1000-level CS class that teaches Scheme seem also to point in that direction; hearing your feelings concerning Scheme, however, makes it seem as though I have been misinformed (alas, the curse of the internet!). Well, I'm teaching myself Common Lisp now, anywho. The book I got was highly recommended, both as an introductory Lisp book and as a great reference for Common Lisp. The book is put out by Prentice Hall as part of there Series In Artificial Intelligence, and being that that is what drew me to teaching myself Lisp in the first place, seems like a good place to start. I'll check out one of the local university libraries here (I'm in lower Rhode Island, by the way) and see if I can pick up some of those books you've mentioned. Thank you all very much.

Books Of Lisp

Hi. Well, I figure since Lisp is such an important language, especially in GNU/Linux systems (favorite of Stallman afterall) I should pose this question to this group. Basically I'm interested in learning Lisp and was wondering if anyone has some favorite or recommended books that describe the syntax of Lisp. Additionally books related to introductory artificial intelligence work, with algorithms, design issues, et cetera, especially books with example Lisp code would be very welcome.
