Graphing Package for Python.

Hi all, I'm using version 2.2 python on a laptop running RH9; 2.4.23 kernel. I'd like to know what the 'list' considers a decent, and fairly easy to learn graphing package. I don't need anything too fancy, just a 2-D line graph package I can plug into python. I'd really like to stay away from object- oriented stuff, mostly because I don't understand it too well. Since the scripts I'm working on will probably be run on MS Windows as well as in Linux, the package will need to have a MS version too. All fdisk /mbr does is replace your mbr with windows info...the most it would screw up is grub / lilo (what ever is in your mbr). Well, if your only keeping your windows partition around to watch DVD's, that's something that you've been able todo in linux for a long time. Check out mplayer / Xine and Ogle. Somewhere along the line, my windows partition grew by 2GB. Is it possible that it's reading a previous partition table? Win98 was still showing c: to be 5.8GB, and dos fdisk was still showing it as 8.2 GB. So, I took Doug's advice and said a prayer, then went at it. Set the win partition back to 6GB with dos (win98) fdisk (with the drive hooked up as master.) This made windows unbootable, and fdisk /mbr didn't correct it. That's ok. I did have it working again until then, and I could have retrieved my data if I'd had any on that partition. Connected the drive as slave and put another drive I had with a non-critical linux installation on as hda (in case I screwed up and partitioned the wrong drive). Booted into linux and repartitioned with sfdisk /dev/hdb, putting in parameters for <start cylinder> <size in cylinders> <type> for each partition when promted: /dev/hdb1 0 765 c * /dev/hdb2 765 130 82 /dev/hdb3 896 1044 (L for linux is the default) /dev/hdb4 1941 1795 (tried both 85 for linux extended and 5 for win extended) /dev/hdb5 1941 1305 L /dev/hdb6 - it insisted on setting up hdb6, so I just hit enter, and let it take the rest of the disk. This was originally unpartitioned space. I then was able to mount /dev/hdb3 and access my root filesystem. I was not able to mount /dev/hdb5 to access my /home partition. Error message from mount was "wrong filesystem type or too many mounted filesystems). Unless someone knows the secret code to to mount a recovered logical partition, I'll assume that there's no easy way to do it and finish this project (i.e. wipe the disk and start over, without putting windows on this drive.) No more extended partitions for this boy. On a brighter note, I learned how to get windows98 to boot from the SECOND hard drive, and that gives me great satisfaction. It was way easier than I thought, and if anyone's interested, I'll give details. This means that when I figure out how to watch movies on dvd in linux, I can get rid of windows by simply removing the second drive. Thanks to all for your help with this. Greg Charles R. Hi Doug, I tried fdisk /mbr and it worked easily. As expected, I only have a windows partition (verified by fdisk). No, there's no lilo.conf and never was one on that installation. There is (was) a grub/menu.lst, which serves the same function, but as far as I understand it, the partition table needs to contain information about linux partitions for either of these to work. I went ahead and booted the rescue system and tried a grub-install /dev/hda, and it returned a message saying that no /dev/root was found. Maybe I'll try parted again, now that I can find where hda1 ends. Thanks, Greg

Partition table blues

Yup. I blew it away. I had win98 and suse 8.2 on the same hard drive, booting linux from floppy. Noticed that I could no longer boot windows from the hard drive, so I attemted to restore the mbr that I'd saved earlier. That didn't work, my partition table is gone, and I can't get there from here. Parted has a function called something like 'Guess at partition near START and END'. I assume it's looking for cylindar numbers. Is there a way to get those if I didn't write them down when I partitioned the drive? I do have the sizes of the partitions, to the nearest 0.1 GB. Looking for a free solution here. I did find a $90 solution that runs in windows and teases me by showing the files but not letting me copy or view them. Thanks, Greg

Problem with mount command

Under 2.11x, this command worked just fine: mount -o port=3049,intr localhost:/null /crypt However, with the 2.12 version of mount, the command hangs and never returns. I have to kill the mount process to recover. Strace reports that the process is hanging at the "mount" call. Also, under 2.12, I do see entries in /var/log/messages indicating that a successful request was made to export /null: Jul 24 18:51:58 tux mountd[1843]: NFS mount of /null attempted from 127.0.0.1 Jul 24 18:51:58 tux mountd[1843]: /null has been mounted by 127.0.0.1 However, in another window, the "mount" command by itself does not show the NFS mount. All other NFS exporting/importing operations work just fine. The difference seems to be the two versions of mount and the use of the "port" option. I've downloaded the util-linux sources but so far cannot find a change that would effect this behavior. In case you are wondering what brought all of this about, I am trying to get my cryptographic file system (CFS by Matt Blaze) working under SuSE 9.1. I found a version of /bin/mount from another Linux system, and using that, I can access my files, but I really want to know why version 2.12 of util-linux broke/changed things. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks! fetchmail/MS IMAP/8 bit

I'm having troubles retaining special (8 bit?) encoding in email messages from the MS Exchange server where I work. Here's the normal path of my data: MS Exchange -> MS(?) IMAP -> fetchmail -> linux sendmail -> procmail -> mutt By the time an email with color fonts gets to mutt, the color is gone. As a test, I modified my .fetchmailrc to specify "cat" as my MDA so eliminated sendmail, procmail and mutt as offenders. I've also added "pass8bits" to my .fetchmailrc -- no improvement. Thus, I've narrowed the suspects to MS IMAP and fetchmail. Does anyone have experience with this problem? USB mouse - left handed ?

In KDE 3.0, I use the GUI to change to left handed, but it has no effect. I also tried ' xmodmap -e "pointer = 3 2 1 " ' to no avail. Other than the fact that I cannot switch the two buttons, the mouse (trackball actually) works fine. gpm is not installed on this sytem, and I don't have root privs. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what else I should try (or rather, what else I should ask my sysadmin to try) ? I just had some strange stuff happen to my SuSE 8.2 installation - it's stalling when I try to copy files and run some programs. If I try to kill the process, it doesn't go away (kill -9 pid, as root), and the machine won't shut down because stuff is still running. This coincidentally happened the same day that I started to prepare a replacement hard drive, so it's not on a critical installation (in fact, it's going to be wiped), but I'd still like to know what's going on. Note that I totally disconnected this drive when I was installing on the new one, just to make sure I didn't do anything to hurt it. Any ideas on what this could be or where to look would be appreciated. Greg

Flowchart software

Does anyone know of any decent flow chart software for linux besides Dia or Kivio. Kivio is nice, however it's inability to export to a png or to be copy and pasted into star office makes it useless for me. Dia just doesn't cut it. Anyone know of anything? Encrypted USB pen drive

Has anyone configured an encrypted usb pen drive under linux? I'm not talking about encrypting single files, but being able to mount the pen drive as an encrypted device? I've look at loop-aes, but I'm curious is anyone has done this before and might give some pointers. [OT] Introduction

Hi all. I wanted to quickly introduce myself. I just recently subscribed to the list and wanted to do a bit more than lurk. I hope to make a LUG meeting in the near future also. I don't want to waste too much bandwidth so I'll keep this short. If anyone is going up to the Ottawa Linux Symposium this month, maybe we can catch up and make some introductions, for everyone else, I look forward to meeting you all the LUG meeting. As I side note, I read the archives and wanted to second the idea for a "distro debate" LUG meeting. I think that would be really interesting to see what everyone runs and why. Open Source CMS?

Hi. I have a consulting client that is a non-profit in the midst of an IT management change. They have been seeking a good content management system for some time, but have not been seriously considering open source solutions for that need in spite of my cajoling them into that direction, in spite of the fact that the majority of their current web solution is built on Linux/Apache/PHP/MySQL/etc. The main objection has been a lack of knowledge of any providers of a full-service CMS solution: sizing, integration, training, implementation, etc., which is something one can pretty much take for granted when dealing with proprietary CMSes. So what I'm seeking are pointers to open source content management integrators (either houses or experienced individual consultants) who can show a proven, referenceable list of happy clients for whom they've provided a full-service CMS solution. I've played with Mambo (openmambo.org) and openeffect. There is a website that has a bunch of CMSs up with admin passwords so you can play around (the CMS sites go back to default every 15 minutes). DVD 1A says it has the following (screen printed on the disc): -- SUSE(r) LINUX Enterprise Server 8 -- Nterprise Linux Services 1.0 -- GroupWise 6.5.1 -- Red Carpet Enterprise Server 2.02 -- ConsoleOne -- Linux Resources DVD 1B says it's got: -- SUSE LINUX Professional 8.2 -- Ximian Desktop 2 DVD 1C says it has: -- SUSE LINUX Professional 9.1 The README file on disc 1A specifically states that Ximian Desktop 2 needs to have SUSE Professional 8.2 installed, NOT 9.1, so that's why 8.2 is there. Disc 1C is bootable, assuming that your system is rigged to deal with that. ;) Other than that, each DVD has .iso files, which the user would burn to CDs (or mount locally, depending on what you're out to accomplish). I think I'll try to "sacrifice" my FC1 system to play with this... :D Although the package said that the contents were time-sensitive material (and each disc says that it is an Evaluation Software DVD-ROM), there was no indication in the README file of when anything (like the licenses) would expire.
