Hi All, I just installed SuSE Server version 9 (my first SuSE installation) and I'd like to use the "Watcher" to get updates automatically, but I can't figure out what the "autorization" window wants. I know it's looking for a username/password pair, but what username/password?? I don't recall creating one, other than the usual 'root' and various users. Is there a "special" username & password that I should've created? Thanks, Chuck

The Worcester Computer Co-op has their lab located within the church building. Patrick and I agreed that a hard drive installation of Knoppix would probably be a reasonable thing to do for several reasons, a) its Debian based, b) it has *everything*, c) the live CD feature, d) its pretty easy to install, e) it pretty easily handles non-English languages. My only concern is to insure that the hard drives on these machine are at least 3-4 GB to accommodate a full Knoppix install. As a backup, I would like at least one other distribution handy in case we get an ornery machine or an undersized hard drive. It would need to have some games, KDE or Gnome, and OpenOffice, at a minimum. Clearly, this isn't a good software selection for a 100MHz machine, so that's another reason to have another distro handy. (I don't think there were more than a couple of machines which were this slow). The event will take place from noon - 4 PM. I'll update the WLUG website shortly with directions and such. I'm looking for volunteers who will be able to attend and who wish to burn a few Knoppix V3.6 CDs. Please contact me before your burn anything or we'll likely end up with way too many CDs. The room where this event will be held is a pretty good size. There will be ample opportunity for unnamed WLUG members to trip on power cords and pull them out mid-installation. :-) Many folks have asked when we'd be having our next install fest - well, this is it! Another thing I just thought of is to check the seperation rollers. They are little blue rollers that make sure you only get one sheet at a time. They should have ridges on them (like treads on a tire) they almost look like veins. If it is relatively smooth, there's your problem. Once should do the trick. There are pickup rollers / d rollers, get a damp cloth (water) and wipe it down...process takes not even a minute. (The only rollers you have to get are the ones that pickup the paper) Also unplug printer first. Portmapper using incorrect ports - how to prevent?

After suffering a power outage, I noticed spamassassin wouldn't start. I'd get: # /etc/init.d/spamassassin restart Restarting SpamAssassin Mail Filter Daemon: No spamd found running; none killed. Could not create INET socket: Address already in use IO::Socket::INET: Address already in use After a bit of checking my configuration, and googling for spamassassin problems, I tried: # lsof -i :783 COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE NODE NAME ypserv 1025 root 5u IPv4 2855 TCP *:spamd (LISTEN) Apparently ypserv grabbed the spamassassin tcp port 783 before spamd started. I fixed the problem by re-arranging the startup sequences in /etc/rc5.d and restarting everything: # lsof -i | egrep "(ypserv|spamd)" spamd 10626 spamd 5u IPv4 44885 TCP localhost:spamd (LISTEN) ypserv 10641 root 4u IPv4 45184 UDP *:643 ypserv 10641 root 5u IPv4 45244 TCP *:646 (LISTEN) I'm wondering if there's a better fix? Hi, all... I inherited a HP Laserjet 1100 from work, recently. (This model's failure mode is that you have to feed it one page at a time, since if you put multiple sheets in the tray, it will grab anywhere from 5 to 20 at a time.) Anywho, it's a nice sweet printer, especially for the price. I'm using it at work with my WinXP box. However, I'd like to bring it home to use with my laptop. It has a parallel interface, and my slick, modern laptop is lacking this. (And I really don't feel like kicking up my 486 each time I want to print something!) Does anyone have any experience with one of those USB to parallel converter dealies? They seem pretty cheap, but I wonder about driver support and whatnot. The USS720 driver seems to be the only one I can find, I assume that Lucent sells that to anyone making such a device, so it's a matter of finding a list somewhere of devices using that chipset. Hi All, I am using openssh on cygwin along with ssh-tunnel (a pearl script that uses IO and IO::Select) to tunnel through a firewall in order to gain access to my desktop at home. I have noticed that recently the behavior has changed and my connection is broken after 3 seconds of inactivity. How do I, a) find out what is causing the connection to be broken and/or b) keep the connection alive. As long as I am actively feeding commands at the shell prompt the connection stays alive. PHP and .forward

You Do it Electronics down 128 has an ATX power supply tester for under $10...I also have one if you want to borrow it and Newegg should have one too. All you do is plug it in to your PS Motherboard connector, and flip the switch. If a green light comes on, it's good. Friends, Can somebody help me here... I need LSI 103o IT root disk controller driver for SCO 5.0.6 I have a new PC, HP ML 350 G4 that must be installed with SCO 5.0.6 but its said that no root risk controller found. I have done so many things to make it enable, but seem unsuccessful so far. I have download it from the internet and its still not much helpin' me. Recommended virtual private server (UML) hosting?

I don't see where hosting would much of a problem at all. The trick is to charge for it. WLUG members who wanted an account on the box would each pay in a couple bucks a month and that money would be used to pay to host the box. If somebody had a decent speakeasy type (allows servers, has decent bandwidth) account, that money could be used to pay the electric bill for the box(s), add capacity, etc. Then you host an webpage,distro respository,irc channel, etc. off of it. Had the same problem. I needed a 450W power supply. The video card is wicked intensive. I'll try to summarize the answers to all the follow-up questions in one reply. When I turn the power on, nothing happens except a red LED on the motherboard lights up. The CPU fan doesn't spin, the computer doesn't beep - nothing (so no beeps or POST codes). The weird thing is that when I turn the power switch off, the LED stays lit for another 5-6 seconds. I'm not sure if that means anything though... In case it matters, the mobo is an Abit NF7 with a single DIMM of 512MB RAM (Crucial), an AMD Athlon 2400+ processor, an ATI Radeon 9600XT video card and it's powered by a 400W power supply. I bought all the parts from New Egg about 7 months ago, put it together and haven't had a single problem save for this. I've tried running it bare bones and moving the DIMM into a different slot. I have a spare computer, but the connector from the power supply doesn't seem to have the same plug as the one on my board. I don't have any extra RAM or a processor to try swapping things out with unfortunately. I've tried Googling the symptoms and the red LED on the mobo to no avail. It seems the only mention of the red LED problem was answered with the typical "check your connections, the mobo's fried, etc..." - no real diagnostics. I stopped in at a computer shop on 122A in Holden this afternoon and was quoted a $35 "bench fee" for taking a look at it and $75/hr to do any work. Like I said before, all the parts are still under warranty through New Egg and I'd happily send them back but I need to figure out what's not working. And I realize this is a Linux list and this is kind of off-topic. That being said, you folks are pretty bright and knowledgable so I figured I'd throw this out there.
