I'm glad they've got a spreadsheet. Now...does anyone have a serial cable I can borror until I convince my wife that spending $30.00 so I can hack my iPAQ is a good idea? OR...has anyone installed familiar/qte through an usb cable, and the handhelds.org site is just wrong when it says it can't be done? It looks like I'm finally going to have time to go out and pick up a serial cable so I can get brother Bill off of my iPAQ. But I've got a question for anyone who has done this ahead of me: Are there any speadsheets that have either been created for familiar linux or Embedded QT? The QTpalmtop web site has got some screen shots, and one has a link to a spreadsheet, but they don't mention it and I can't find the package anywhere. Unfortuately, I've got to have a spreadsheet so I can keep track of hours and expenses and such, so I'm kinda stuck, maybe I shoulda gotten a vr3? Also, are there any utilities out there that would allow me to do irsync with palms?

I'm looking for recommendations on local (Worcester to Natick, Westboro to Leominster, etc.) Linux-centric PC companies to buy an Athlon PC. I'll grab the name later, but there is a place on route 30 in Westborough that will build a PC to spec and put whatever distro you want on it. They're primarily a windows office, but when I asked about Linux they said, "Sure, we've been getting more and more requests for Linux lately and we'll put whatever you want on it!" This makes me happy. Like I said, I'll get the name/number later, but take rt 30 from 9 into town and you can't miss it on your left (about 100 yards before the traffic circle). I have been working as a Unix Sys Admin for Accenture (formerly Andersen Consulting) for the last few months, although I have been with the company for 3 years. I agree with what Gary said and additionally would add getting your foot in the door working at a helpdesk somewhere. I know from experience that most tech companies will look within before hiring from the outside to fill positions. I am running SuSE 7.0 with the 2.2.18? kernel. I have not compiled my own kernel before. Last night when attempting to upgrade to XFree86 4.1 I somehow f**ked up my configuration and can now only run X as root and I don't know what changed to cause that to happen. I had backed up my entire partition so the original configuration files are around but I am not sure which files I should restore to get back to my original configuration. I am contemplating upgrading to SuSE 7.2 with the 2.4.x kernel and reformatting my partition to be a Rieserfs file system. Secure Modems (A little off topic)

Does anyone know of a secure modem(s) that does MD4, MD5 or SHA1 authentication? They would be running with UnixWare and Solaris platforms. I would guess that they're probably O/S independent. Thanks, Chuck

System crash

Hi all, I have been having problems with my system locking to the point where I needed to press the reset button to recycle the box. Well, this happened again and this time things are not working properly after bringing the system back up. I have been able to start networking services and I can start KDE desktop but none of my X applications will run. Now I have several questions: 1) What type of problems could have been created by an improper shutdown of the box? 2) Will reinstalling KDE fix this problem? 3) How do I go about figuring out what is causing my machine to lock up? It is happening frequently (every few days) and when I am doing different things. I have not been able to determine a pattern. Thanks, Mike

Greetings, I don't know whether there is a topic for the next meeting and it just hasn't made it onto the web page or not, but I figured I'd offer a suggestion to the group. Is anyone interested on seeing a presentation on the various DVD players that are available for Linux along with their setup. hardware support, and configuration, etc? I'm headed to the west coast next week for a 7-day Alaskan cruise, and I really need something to do for the 6-hour plane ride each way other than watching Top Gun. I'd be happy to do so, but I figured I'd ask the group instead of just mailing Andy as "installing and running a couple of apps in Linux" might be on the light side for a presentation. If people are interested and there's already something for this month, just let me know and I'll write something up.
