Hey Everybody! We have a WLUG meeting on Sept. 15th at 7PM! Here are the vitals: Location: Washburn Labs Rm 232 @7pm Speaker: William Temple Topic: Container technologies... The speaker for this meeting is William Temple. Here's what he recently posted to the list (if you didn't already see it) Thanks for inviting me to give a talk on containers this Thursday. I'm a Senior at WPI and spent the last two summers working on container technologies at Red Hat under the Project Atomic/OpenShift banners. If you all are interested, topics for discussion could be: - Containers 101: Introduction & Motivations - Container Technologies -- docker -- Open Containers Initiative -- LXC, rkt, and others - Container Implementation -- namespaces -- cgroups -- security implications, comparison to Virtual Machines - Containers in Production (Kubernetes, etc.) - Containers in Consumer Environments (Flatpak, Snappy, etc.) If there are any other container-related topics you'd like to hear about, please just let me know and I can work them in. I'm mostly familiar with the Docker/OCI & Kubernetes orchestration stack, so I won't be able to go into technical details about other systems, but can give an overview if someone else wants to get into the weeds about any other container systems. I'd like to thank Logan for getting this organized and for William for being accomidating of our location and schedule change. There seem to be a several WLUG people who know a lot about this, but there are also those of us who first heard of it a few weeks ago. Please don't let it turn into an insider discussion of marketing buzzwords. (1) What goes into a container? (2) What can I now do with a full container that Kernighan and Ritchie couldn't do in 1976 with a Unix process? (3) etc. -- Keith

Hey Gang, WPI's scheduling software decided that 8:30pm was close enough to 7pm... We're going to move the meeting to the 15th, so we can have a) a better choice of meeting rooms b) a more acceptable meeting time!! The topic is still going to be Docker, only now a week later! I'm still confirming with Will, but I figure it's better to get this out now then wait. Sorry for all the confusion. BTW, I see an earlier offer from Logan that his roommate William Temple might give a talk on containers.
