MegaMeeting

HI gang, USDataCenters is holding a meeting in Marlboro, MA on Wednesday, June 6, 2001 for a number of Boston area computer user groups. Most of these groups are Windows related, but not all. I have signed up to represent WLUG. GNHLUG, BLU, and (I think) MWBLUG will also be in attendance. I tried to get a table just for WLUG, but they have run out of tables. The Boston Linux and Unix User Group was kind enough to allow us to share some space with them (many thanks to Jerry Feldman). SCSI Tape Drive Question

We have a kicking VA Linux 4450 server with a VXA-V17 tape drive in it. Unfortunatly the tape drive isn't seen by linux. It shows up in the scsi bios utilities. There is no mention of a tape drive in dmesg or /var/log/messages after bootup, and it doesn't work when you try something like "mt -f /dev/st0 status". The drive is on scsi channel B, does that make a difference? Is there some way to scan the scsi bus manually? I checked /proc/config.gz and tape drive support is built in. Any ideas, suggestions? -Marc

Hi all, I am getting a notebook with Win2k preinstalled, and I would like to repartition the drive and set aside a few hundred megs for a GNU/Linux installation. So I was wondering if Lilo would be able to boot Win2k? Also, how well is NTFS supported in the Linux kernel? "Couldn't find ext2 superblock..."

Using Darkstar Resque Disk to boot and look around a RH 6.2 installation. e2fsck -n /dev/hda1 results in Couldn't find ext2 superblock, trying backup blocks... e2fsck: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/hda1 Here are the questions: Can I fix the superblock? Or is it re-install time? Duplicate blocks are reported in hda12 (/) when I boot RH 6.2. Is it possible to fix that? RH6.2 boot in rescue mode from CD says fdisk unable to open hda but it is recognized by Darkstar Resque Disk. Unfortunately Darkstar only has partitions defined to hda9 and does not recognize hda12. Is it possible to rename a partition (hda12) to another name (hda5) from outside? I have a second system, Windows based, which allows me access to the internet for downloads, email, etc. Is there a way to download utilities on the Win machine and then execute them from a floppy on the Linux machine either booted into rescue mode from RH or from Darkstar floppy? XEmacs question - gnuserv/gnuclient

HI gang, I'm running XEmacs 21.1.8 and am playing with gnuserv/gnuclient. Within XEmacs, I do M-x gnuserv-start (which seems OK). In a terminal window on the same machine, I type gnuclient and another XEmacs window pops up quite quickly (as I expect). However, I can't get this to work from another machine on my home network. I played with the xauth stuff and also tried setting the GNU_SECURE environment variable to no avail. Clearly I've done something wrong but I don't know what. Can somebody walk me through the steps? I'm expecting that if I run gnuserv on machine 'tux' that I can set the security so that I can access that gnuserv process from machine 'andypc' by typing the correct incantation of the gnuclient command on 'andypc'. Hostname

Thanks for the help with realaudio. Now it is working fine. My next question concerns how the hostname is published. When I look at the DHCP clients table provided by my router software the windoze boxes have published their hostname correctly but my linux box has published an incorrrect name. When I look at /etc/HOSTNAME the name is 'zeus' however then name that shows up in the clients table is '80'. What am I missing? thx, --mike

What is the best way to become a system administrator? 2.) What exact skills does an employer look for in a perspective client to be a system administrator? 3.)
