PSC1210 and CUPS server
by Chuck Haines Jan. 31, 2005

Jan. 31, 2005

I just recently decided to put my PSC1210 on my linux server so I could share it with other people. I installed it using cups just fine, it's prints beautiful from the linux machine. However when I try and install the printer from Windows, it asks me for the INF file to install the driver. Not unfortunately HP doesn't include this INF, as they want you to install all their crap. I was curious if anyone else had any experience with this. KickStart fedora core 3 minimal exclude @base group
by Matt Higgins Jan. 31, 2005

Jan. 31, 2005

I am attempting a minimal fc3 install <500 MB, I was shooting for <200MB. Looking at the @core package group from comps.xml. My calculations show this group to be about 130MB and its description tag reads "<description>Smallest possible installation</description>". However the "Minimal Install" from the installer is about 530MB. With some research it looks like, the minimal install is not just @core but also @base and @dialup. I can easily exclude @dialup by setting the uservisible tag to true and unselecting this package group. When I try the same for @base it does not show up in the package selection list? So my questions are these 1. Is it possible though some ks syntax to exclude a default package group from my kickstart config ? i.e. -@ PackageGroup ? If this were possible I may be able to try -@base and -@dialup leaving only @core. 2. Is it possible to not use any package group at all and simply select the packages I want ? In this case I would just list out all the rpms in the @core group and thats it .. possibly some extras. 3. Is there a way to create your own core package group.. this would sever the same purpose as number 2 but possibly make it more flexible. Note I know you can create your own extra package groups my goal is to modify the existing @core group. Some other things to note.. I have to use Fedora and I would like to have the kickstart totally unattended. I basically have the install unattended with PXE,TFTP,NFS,DHCP but .. I need to tweak the packages. -Matt

xbiff
by Bill Mills-Curran Jan. 31, 2005

Now that xbiff is gone (not in fc3), what's a good replacement? I've gotten a lot of good use out of xbiff & use it to notify me about a number of things. I'm surprised it's gone, but I guess it's time to move on. Suggestions? Thanks, Bill

Wireless and FC3
by Mike Leo Jan. 25, 2005

Jan. 25, 2005

I have a new Dell D400 with a Broadcom 4309 wireless card and I have installed FC3 and ndiswrapper. I have installed the "correct" Windows .inf file and everybody is happy. when I iwlist wlan0 scan, it lists all the WAP's I can see correctly. However, I cannot get an IP address via DHCP, and assigning one staticaly does not work. When i dhclient wlan0, it finds the WAP, and the DHCP server, but refuses to accept an IP. My guess is that the ndiswrapper "trick" isn't working for this driver. Any thoughts? Thanks Mike __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Read only the mail you want - Yahoo! samba printer config
by Bill Mills-Curran Jan. 23, 2005

Jan. 23, 2005

I'm floundering trying to get my fedora 3 machine to act as a print server for an WinXP machine. The linux box is freshly built, and I just moved my printer from my redhat 9 machine. What works: 1. Local printing. It's a USB printer, and it worked just fine from the CUPS setup. What doesn't: 1. I can't "add printer" on the WinXP machine. 2. When I start the smb daemon, I get the following in the smbd log: [2005/01/22 18:14:51, 0] printing/nt_printing.c:nt_printing_init(383) nt_printing_init: error checking published printers: WERR_ACCESS_DENIED This looks like the problem to me, but I'm not sure. When I try to add the printer in WinXP, I get a popup "Windows cannot connect to the printer. Operation could not be completed." So, I'm stuck. (And under pressure -- my wife can't print!) Any advice? Thanks, Bill

Re: [Wlug] audio on new machine

Well... it's not being utterly depreciated, it's being superseded with "udev". Basically, the /dev directory has become dynamic. http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/kernel/hotplug/udev.html Explains it quite nicely. Tim.
