Set Date/Time

Hi, I am having a problem setting the date/time on my Linux box. I set it using date 030310152001 for 3/3/2001 10:15. Everyting seems fine until I reboot the box. At that time it changes to some other time. I checked my CMOS and the time is correct. What am I doing wrong? thanx for your help. Peter N.

Network problem: mine or theirs?

Hi all, I have a problem accessing the Internet. On precisely every other attempt, I get failures. For example, every other unique URL I click in Netscape gives me the following error: A network error occurred while Netscape was receiving data. (Network error: connection reset by peer) Try connecting again. I suspect that my network provider's DNS server is having problems. Since I'm a DHCP client of AT&T Broadband, I tried removing all but one of the nameserver lines in the /etc/resolv.conf file to see if one of them was flaky. After trying all 3 provided nameservers uniquely, either this isn't the problem, or they're all flaky. Any thoughts? I've got kernel 2.4.1 up and running and am pleased that all seems to be relatively well. My boss has an iMac at home and dials in via a ppp connection to one of my linux boxes running now 2.4.1. I've played with various ppp options and have removed just about everything from the /etc/ppp/options file. ssh

Hi, When i pop my mail i create a tunnel through ssh, and pop through that. Using this command "ssh -C -f me(a)pop.myserver -L 10110:pop.myserver:110 sleep 30" Well every time i create the tunnel i have to enter my password for the pop server. Is there a way to use ssh tools so i don't have to enter my password? I'm using kmail is that's relevant. Thanks, --Brad

Hey, thanks alot all of you who went to http://orbitz.dyn.dhs.org/test.php. For those of you wondering why the heck I'd ask a such a thing, here is an explination. A friend of mine got a cool (but I'm assuming not very new idea) for passive OS detection through version strings on network software, in this case web browsers. What the php script does is log all of your version (User-Agent header) strings to a file, then by doing some greps and sort I create a wonderful list of all the strings. Then I use a perl script i made to convert the version strings to snort (www.snort.org) rule sets. So now when people visit http://orbitz.dyn.dhs.org/ and they are using a web browser in my data base, I can log what OS, web browser, and whatelse is in the header. So the bigger the database, the more people I can pick up. Its a pretty cool idea I think. There are other ways (probably simpler and more efficient) of doing this. Such as possible an apache mod. Are you positive that the problem is memory and not CPU? Most decoding of audit and video is very cpu intensive. If the audio/video app gets swapped out (of the cpu), you can notice choppiness in quality. Is there a way to reserve a block of memory when starting realaudio. I have noticed that when my system is running out of free memory the audio quality goes to sh*t as the open application fight over resources. attaching processes

Hi, I was trying to find a way to attach a process to the shell's job list with no luck. I wanted to be able to bring a running process into the foreground of a shell session that didn't start the process. The closet command that i could find was the disown command for bash, which does the opposite of what I'm looking for. Does anyone know of a bash (or any other shell) command that will let you bring a processes into the foreground of a shell, which is not the original parent of the process? Thanks, --Brad

WLUG mail server crash

Hello all - Over the weekend, the machine that serves as the WLUG mail had a major hard drive crash. As a result, the working copy of the WLUG mailing list is now a fine black powder floating around the inside of the hard drive case. While the list has been restored from a backup copy, this has caused a few changes: - since it was a slightly older copy, a few people who have unsubscribed may be back on, and vice versa. you can go to http://mail.wlug.org/mailman/listinfo/wlug to fix this. - all preferences and passwords have been reset. same page as above to fix this. - the URLs have changed slightly - the .cgi portion has been removed (Rob - can you fix this on the WLUG web page, please?) HI everybody, Our next meeting shall be held in Kinnicutt Hall on the WPI campus on Wednesday, September 10th, at 7:00 PM. Note that this location is not the same as last month. This is the room that we generally use for our meetings. At this meeting, the topic will be "An Introduction to Linux for Newcomers", and the intended audience is people who do not know much (if anything) about Linux, but do have experience with computers and perhaps Windows. I'll prepare some slides and discuss the following topics (and perhaps more): o What is Linux? o Origins of Linux o Software licensing o Computer requirements (memory, disk space, etc) o How to obtain a copy of Linux o How to "test drive" Linux without messing up my computer o More... o Q/A session during the meeting and afterwards o Demo of a single CD version of Linux which won't modify your existing files on the C: drive o Giveaway: copies of a single CD version of Linux (probably Knoppix and/or Suse Live Eval - can somebody help me burn a few copies?) Bring your friends - let's see if we can get them to at least "kick the tires" on Linux. After the meeting, we'll adjourn to the Boynton Restaurant for pizza and beer. See ya there! OS: Red Hat 9 Q1: sendmail... I have my sendmail configured to masquerade my outgoing email with my cable ISP's domain (charter.net) However, I have not found out how to convert my local username to the username I have at my ISP. Any ideas? BTW, I've configured Pine just fine for this. I'd just like take the extra step and have sendmail take care of all mailer utilities. Q2: CUPS... What's the best/right way to upgrade from LPRng to CUPS? I understand that HP printers work better under CUPS. True or False? TIA, Bill
