routing question

Hey guys, I add a route like this: route add -net 10.1.0.0/24 gw 66.92.74.135 And it shows up fine in my routing tables... But if the other machine looses it's link to the 10.1.0.* address, my machine tries to route those addresses to it's default route. I think the gateway sends some kind of "It's not here anymore" packet? That's not a big deal since it just gets dropped at my default gateway, but when the link to the 10.1.0.* address comes back up, my machine doesn't ever re-try to get to it through the 66.92.74.135 gateway... Is there a way to force a route so it always goes through the gateway? Even after it does fail? Thanks, -Marc

Permissions on a file

Hello all, Does anyone know how I would go about listing the permissions of a file in octal format instead of symbolic? I need to pass that value to a script somehow, and although I could write a script to do that I didn't want to waste my time if there was already a command to do that. Thanks! -- Gary

HI everybody, This is a reminder of the upcoming WLUG meeting to be held this Wednesday, July 18th, at 7:00 PM in Kinnicutt Hall at WPI in Worcester, MA. The topic for this meeting will be "Using Digital Cameras with Linux". Marc Hughes will do a presentation / demo with his digital camera. I will then do a quick demo of gimp-print to print the images which Marc takes with his camera. I'll be bringing my Epson Stylus Color Photo 870 printer to the meeting with some 4x6 photo paper. After the meeting, a bunch of us will probably go to the Boynton Restaurant for pizza and beer. See ya there! USB hangs system - requires reboot

HI gang, I just installed SuSE 7.2 Professional and upgraded to the 2.4.6 kernel (SMP). For the very first time, I'm attempting to enable the USB controller on my motherboard to talk to my Epson 870 printer (which has both parallel and USB interfaces). The onboard controller is an 82371AB. I looked and noticed the following kernel modules loaded: usbcore printer usb-uhci I think this is correct. I've enabled verbose debugging messages in the kernel. I looked at /var/log/messages, and it is detecting my printer. Also, I ran a program called usbview and saw the printer there as well. OK so far. I tried: cat some_file > /dev/usblp0 I get about 1 line of output and then my entire system hangs (it completely ignores any keyboard input, mouse movements don't cause cursor movement, and the machine is unaccessible from the network). I end up reaching for the reset button and waiting forever for my disks to fsck (yes, Tim K. I'm seriously considering Reiser fs). :-) I'm not sure I know how to go about debugging this...any suggestions? Oh, by the way, I did insure that there were no parallel port modules in place that might somehow interfere. What is shmfs?

HI gang, After upgrading to a 2.4 kernel, I now see a mounted device thus: Filesystem 1k-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on shmfs 76220 0 76220 0% /dev/shm I can't find anything written that says what this is. Hi Andy - Try the VALinux beta 2.4.5 kernel: ftp://ftp.valinux.com/pub/software/kernel/beta USB hasn't been a priority for VA but one of the usb-linux developers is inside the VA kernel group and tends to plug in a bunch of stuff with each of the kernels. Hi Andy - Long time no see. 2 things: That kernel comes with EXT3 already integrated in the source. Once you have an ext3 kernel you can enable it by changing fstab. Disable it by changing fstab. The on-disk structure is the same. Start debugging by booting with the second CPU turned off. You could be locking on MP bug. Used to happen with me and my HP720 OfficeJet until they get their MP act together. ccb -- Charles C. Problem with network card

Hi guys, This message is not actually a Linux based question, but is still "nix". I have recently installed Solaris 8 (for Intel) on a PC at work and am having problems connecting to the network. I think that the problem is related to the speed that the NIC is trying to use when connected to the LAN. I suspect this because the little green speed indicator for 100mb is illuminated (on the NIC) when the workstation is connected to the network jack. Determining speed of device...

Got a quick question... Other than looking in dmesg for what the driver reported the speed of the cable of the network device, does anybody know what utility or place in /proc that'll tell you what the speed of the cable connected to your machine is. Thanks, Tim.
