General firewall question

Hey folks... I'm currently running Apache on Win2K to serve a small personal webpage through my static IP assigned by my DSL provider. The machine is a "test" server but I'd like to secure it a little more. I've got a spare box sitting around that I'd like to use as a firewall/router, specifically with something like Coyote Linux/the LRP distros. I'm wondering if it's possible to use the DHCP features in such a firewall setup to pass the HTTP requests (router with static IP, server with a 192.168.x.x type IP) to the Win2K box AND limit the connections only to HTTP port 80 on the Win2K box. Next step would be a Win2K mailserver... Does this make sense or would a pure Linux server/IPtables type setup be easier? NFS? problem

I have two linux boxes that have nfs-mounted a file system from a DG/UX server. One of them cannot read the directories properly. Here's a short Perl script: **************************************************************** #!/usr/bin/perl opendir(DIR, $ARGV[0]) or die; @files = readdir(DIR); print(join("\n", @files, '')); exit(0); **************************************************************** On server A: % uname -a Linux A 2.4.16 #1 SMP Fri Dec 14 15:31:54 EST 2001 i686 unknown On server B: % uname -a Linux B 2.4.2-2 #1 Sun Apr 8 20:41:30 EDT 2001 i686 unknown B is running the standard RedHat 7.1 kernel, while server A has been upgraded. On B, when I run the test script, supplying the name of an NFS directory (on the DG/UX server), I get the "right stuff" -- a good directory listing. On A, the same operation gives me nothing. No failure or anything. The script works find on local disks and on disks NFS mounted from a Sun server. The A server also has the reiserfs installed on an unrelated drive. The symptom is not limited to perl scripts. I get strange behavior from tcsh, too. Any ideas? Thanks, Bill

REMINDER: Meeting Wed, Jan 16th

Hi everybody, This is a friendly reminder about the upcoming WLUG meeting, to be held on Wednesday, January 16th, 2002, on the WPI campus in Worcester, MA. For this meeting, please note that we will be in a **DIFFERENT LOCATION**. The meeting will be in Perreault Hall in a building called Fuller Labs (yes, still on the WPI campus). To get directions, click the yellow "WLUG meetings" picture on the top of the WLUG website, and then click "directions". It is in the building next to the Gordon Library. Taking place at this meeting will be the greatly anticipated "Linux Distribution Bakeoff". Representing several different distributions will be: Doug Waud - SuSE 7.2 Tim Keller - Mandrake 8.1 Adam Keck - Debian (Stable) This meeting is being held to discuss distribution specific features. The aforementioned folks profess some level of expertise with their particular distribution and will extol us with the virtues of same. I'm sure it'll be a fun and informative meeting. (Should I have been in sales instead of engineering?! Nah, nobody would buy anything from a long haired guy in a suit...). At this meeting we will also discuss the upcoming WLUG Install Fest, to be held on Saturday, February 9th, 2002 at Stratus Computer in Maynard, MA. This will be our third annual install fest at this location, and each has been well attended in the past by both installees and WLUG members. If you are interested in attending, please send e-mail to Tim Keller (tim.keller(a)stratus.com) Lurkers and voyeurs are also welcome to watch and learn. Be sure to tell your non-Linux friends! Lunch will be served, and refreshments will be available. Safety mitts will be made available to prevent inadvertant plug pulling of powered computers (darn, Doug's not coming). There will also be a few items available for raffle at the install fest. I suspect that I can scrounge up a few items for raffle at the WLUG meeting as well. After the meeting, we'll make our monthly pilgrimage to the Boynton Restaurant for pizza and beer. Hi I was following the WLUG flow of messages with regard to offering/needing equipment when I went on to the next message and did a double-take when the first line came up as "We are in need of a vibratome for sectioning pre-fixed brain tissue," Then I realized the flow of WLUG stuff had stopped and I was now getting stuff from a medical list :-) I guess it's just one of those hazards of having a foot in two dissimilar camps! doug

I want to reduce the amount of stuff in my apartment, so I have free stuff to give away: 1) Sun Sparc IPX 2) Sun monitor (16" I think ... But it's huge) 3) Full tower PC case ... No power supply 4) Compaq 286 Laptop ... It works! 5) Super Nintendo (controllers, games, etc) 6) Pentium 233 + motherboard I'll bring all of it to the meeting, if you want something email me. Could someone please explain what the following messages mean. My network connection is alive but when I ping different internet addresses I am getting 100% packet loss except when I ping www.erols.com.
