While I think having an ISO image for download would be a good idea, a general download area where folks can post items of interest, say from one of the WLUGs, might be a better idea. That way, if someone has items that have been discussed in either a meeting or on the mailing list, then they can put it somewhere for others to grab. Of course, there is the perennial problem of making sure this isn't used for illicit materials and/or that the site isn't swamped, but there are many ways to manage that. Most companies have an area for this sort of thing and I'll bet we could come up with a solution as well. Too bad I can't make the next meeting, but I'll bet a good discussion over pizza and beer might yield some good ideas! Regards, Steve P.S. I'm just in the process of building a new RH server machine for myself and my domains. I plan on having such a download area and would be interested in being educated as to the pros and cons of that sort of service. I had thought about putting Linux stuff in there, so maybe there is a potential fit with WLUG?

4th annual Installfest a complete success!

Hey All, The installfest was a complete success! Statistics: Total Installs: 8 Percentage successful: 100% Installs that were a no-show: ~2 (both Stratus employees, I'll be hunting them down later today...) Pizzas Ordered: 6 Percentage devoured: 100% Number of junker pc's that one installee cannibalized to make one working machine: 3 Raffle Info: Congratulations to Colin Novick and Bill Mills-Curran who both won copies of "Linux System Administration: A Users Guide." The Installers: Andy Stewart Al Butler Brian Waite Chuck Anderson David Lugwig Mani Sundaram Marc Hughes (If I've forgotten anybody, just send an addendum...) Other Stuff: Someone asked about the goodies CD's... There are a couple of things. 1. If Chuck has the space, I'd gladly upload it and he can mount it on a loopback. 2. I will cut a couple more copies (I might add some more stuff) and bring them to the meeting on Thursday. If you specify want a copy, drop me a line and I'll make you up one explicitly. Im sorry I didnt make it to the installfest, I was really planning on it. I slept until 2:30, then I printed the directions and headed for 495.. but once i got to the ramp it was 3 oclock... and the installfest ended at 4... so I just turned around and went home.. WLUG Install Fest CDs

Hey gang, DON'T do what I just did. My WLUG install fest CDs were quite dusty when I got them home, so I rinsed them off in water as I have done with other CDs many times in the past. Hi all, How did the install-fest go? I really wanted to come, but my daughter came down with a high fever and we had to schedule a doctor's appointment. I could have come earlier than I was planning but it didn't feel right to say to my two year old, "Sorry you feel awful and need to go to the doctor, daddy can't play right now I'm going to hang out with a buch I geeks I've never even personally met" I was rather proud of myself, I only considered telling my daughter for about a second before I slapped myself in the face ("But for an android, that is a lifetime"). samba & window share names

Is there some easy way to resolve names to their windows share. I got annoyed at typing in ip addresses and wrote a quick script to use nmblookup to get the ip address and shove it into the /etc/hosts file. Unfortunately you have to code what hosts it enters. I'd rather have it automatically do it for all machines. (Note: this script isn't quite correct. It doesn't handle some error conditions right and wipes out the /etc/hosts file. If there is interest in the fixed version let me know and I'll get it.) I was at linux world and got to play with a zarus... One word: wow. Hardware wise, it's essentially an iPaq. But it adds an integrated keyboard and a SD slot. PocketPC and Linux

Hi all, I've got the 3800 iPAQ and installing linux on it is still pretty much "you will break your handheld". I've also got some windows software that keeps me locked in for now until companies release linux binaries or I can figure out how to run a palm emulator on my iPAQ when I get linux on it. Until that time, has ANYONE figured out how to hack activesync connectivity with Linux? It really ticks me off that M$ got rid of the ability to do a direct cable connection in PocketPC, while my hardware sweet and I love the responsiveness of my iPAQ, I almost wish I had gotten a palm or a clie. Any Ideas? Wes
