Fedora 10 and sound
by dulsi＠identicalsoftware.com Dec. 1, 2008

Dec. 1, 2008

I decided to install fedora 10. I understand that my laptop is old (bought in 2002). Fedora 8 had problems installing due to 256M of ram but ran fine once I got it installed. I've since upgraded the memory but fedora 10 can't play audio. Any music file I've tried lags horribly. Is there any configuration I can modify to fix the problem? Alternatively can the audio server be disabled?

With thanks to the mailing list owners for the privilege of posting here. -- -- -- ---- -- -- ---- -- -- ---- -- -- ---- -- -- ---- -- -- ---- -- - LINUX SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR -------------------------- SolarWave Energy, a solar and renewable information technology firm, has a need for a talented individual to assist us on a contract basis (initial project and long term retainer) to set up and help maintain a set of servers. A little workstation support may also be needed now and then. The initial projects include: 1. Establish a source code management system using Subversion with appropriate clients/tools on workstations - help develop policies, practices, and procedures - debug 3. Help design and then build a 3-tier test to production source code flow scheme using three servers (local, called "DEVELOPMENT", remote 1 called "STAGE", and remote 2 called "PRODUCTION". DEVELOPMENT for testing (playground), STAGE for "staging" to production (final test), and PRODUCTION for release. Other than when in a staging mode, PRODUCTION and STAGE can be switched into service as required should one or the other fail. Full details of these requirements will be provided, of course. Other help that will be needed in near future: 1. Assist company technology move to unified quarters (currently two facilities: Engineering in LITTLETON, MA and Administration/Sales in CAMBRIDGE, MA). Somewhere "in-between" has not been selected yet. 2. Assist in developing a better authentication scheme for remote (embedded) Linux data acquisition boxes. Ongoing: Retainer for telephone consultation, problem-solving, system maintenance, etc. Qualifications: 1. Thorough systems administration knowledge and experience with Linux servers and workstations 2. Depth of knowledge and experience with bash, perl, and php to facilitate automated processes. REMINDER: Meeting on Wednesday, Nov 19th, 7:00 PM
by Andy Stewart Nov. 17, 2008

Nov. 17, 2008

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 HI Everybody, Don't forget about the WLUG meeting! J.R. Mauro will be our guest speaker (he was at the last meeting, too, for those who might remember him). His talk will be on Source Code Management. Please refer to the WLUG website for a more detailed description of J.R.'s talk. As a side topic, either after J.R.'s talk, or over pizza, I'll entertain any discussion of why I shouldn't dump Kubuntu in favor of SuSE on my laptop. The Hardy and Intrepid versions of Kubuntu are backward steps in functionality compared to Gutsy (in my very limited experience). The SuSE live CD works just fine. Don't reply to the email...repeat, don't reply to the email...save the flame wars for Wednesday evening! :-) See ya there! Automatically deleting old email
by Clint Moyer Nov. 16, 2008

Nov. 16, 2008

Is it possible in Evolution (or another email client) to configure messages to be deleted after a specified period without manual intervention? I have a few folders set for mailing lists and shopping offers, but the contents are irrelevant after a few days. I'd like to be able to set up each folder to delete messages older than seven days, for example. Thanks.

Samba config help
by Pete Wason Oct. 30, 2008

Oct. 30, 2008

I wil PAY someone to come to my house and help me configure Samba on my CentOS server. I have three Windows machines set up with an admin user and a non-admin user. I don't really care right now if the non-admin user can access my server, I just want seamless access as admin so I can transfer stuff for my websites without using floppies or CDs. I have lots of money. No, wait, I *don't* have lots of money :) but maybe we can work something out. If I can make my server an ldap server and set up domain stuff, cool. If not, whatever works. I also have a Pegasos running MorpOS (which has its own copy of Samba), and a couple of Amiga 3000s which could either be setup with smbfs (which I had working at one point), or they could just FTP to the linux box (assuming I can get SMB access there from the Windoze side). Lot of fun to be had by all! Open to suggestions, Pete Wason???Hy Noom Publications???codevark(a)aim.com???508.865.5414
