Installfest Time!
by Keller, Tim Jan. 3, 2002

Jan. 3, 2002

Hey Everybody, As the Subject implies, it's Installfest time. I'm thinking of holding it the 9th of February, I'd like some input on if this is too early, etc... I'd also like other peoples input on stuff such as... 1. What distributions people should bring... 2. Possibly having a mini key signing party 3. Quake/Unreal/Castle Wolfenstein/tetrinet tournament. 4. Have some demonstrations going (such as transgaming running the sims/diablo2) Basically if you've got some idea that might improve the installfest, fire me an email! I'd also like some input from Andy about the possibility of using WLUG money to purchase something good for the raffle. I'm seeing if I can get us a big / better room for all this. Tim.

sound module?
by Bill Mills-Curran Dec. 16, 2001

Dec. 16, 2001

I got a new (old) machine, and I'm having problems getting the sound card working. The machine is a DELL Optiplex GX1, and the sound card is built into the mother board. I can't see anything on the motherboard that tells me what kind of sound card is there. I can't even find anything about the motherboard other than it's Dell. There are messages in my system log: Dec 15 22:21:31 newguy modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-slot-0 Dec 15 22:21:31 newguy modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-service-0-0 I get these messages at boot and whenever I put a music CD in the drive. Any ideas? TIA, Bill

help: printing to MS98 server
by Bill Mills-Curran Dec. 14, 2001

Dec. 14, 2001

I thought I had success (well, I had some) setting up printing to my W98 printer. What I find is that I can print a postscript file to the printer just fine -- at least the first page. But, I can't get more than the first page to go. Here's my commands. The first is for a postscript file, and the second uses nenscript so that I can print a text file. cat mail.ps | gs -dNOPAUSE -q -sDEVICE=bjc600 -sOutputFile=- - | smbclient //bertha/CANON -c 'print -' nenscript -B -p - < mail.txt | gs -dNOPAUSE -q -sDEVICE=bjc600 -sOutputFile=- - | smbclient //bertha/CANON -c 'print -' I think I'm doing something wrong with the gs command, but I don't see what. TIA, Bill

Re: Configuring Linux laptop for cable modem access???
by Andy Stewart Dec. 13, 2001

Dec. 13, 2001

Hi Gerrald, I don't know the answer directly, as I don't run RedHat on my systems at home. I'm forwarding this to the WLUG mailing list, as somebody there probably knows the answer. WLUG: Any thoughts on how to configure a laptop running RedHat 7.1 for access to the Charter Pipeline cable modem? Is there anything special with Charter Pipeline vs. any other cable modem? Please don't forget to cc: gsmith(a)caldera.com on this one. Change the "bootproto" line to be "dhcp" instead of "none" (assuming it's configured statically at the moment.) The RedHat documentation has information on this. If you don't have the manual (I forget if there's an electronic version on the RH CDs), you can look at them from the RedHat site. Hi Gerrald! There is nothing special you need do. I have a laptop running RH7.1 and am using a "cable modem" (Surf Board) in Shrewsbury. I also have a home network, but that doean't make any difference - you either configure the router or the PC to talk to the cable modem. Assuming you have DHCP (i.e., you do not have a static IP assigned), you should be able to simply configure your ethernet interface and plug it into the cable modem. There is a good chance eth0 is already setup if you installed RH onto the laptop with the nic card already installed. You can use Linuxconf to set up eth0 for dhcp and that is about it (use the masks given to you by the cable company, as well as DNS settings, etc.). Of course, you might want to consider putting a firewall between you and the rest of the world because when you plug your PC directly into a cable modem, the anyone on that system can now see you computer...
