"Couldn't find ext2 superblock..."
by Dan Crooks May 28, 2001

May 28, 2001

Using Darkstar Resque Disk to boot and look around a RH 6.2 installation. e2fsck -n /dev/hda1 results in Couldn't find ext2 superblock, trying backup blocks... e2fsck: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/hda1 Here are the questions: Can I fix the superblock? Or is it re-install time? Duplicate blocks are reported in hda12 (/) when I boot RH 6.2. Is it possible to fix that? RH6.2 boot in rescue mode from CD says fdisk unable to open hda but it is recognized by Darkstar Resque Disk. Unfortunately Darkstar only has partitions defined to hda9 and does not recognize hda12. Is it possible to rename a partition (hda12) to another name (hda5) from outside? I have a second system, Windows based, which allows me access to the internet for downloads, email, etc. Is there a way to download utilities on the Win machine and then execute them from a floppy on the Linux machine either booted into rescue mode from RH or from Darkstar floppy? Thank you in advance for any assistance, guidance or direction. Dan Crooks

***NEW*** WLUG website
by Andy Stewart May 26, 2001

May 26, 2001

HI everybody, I am hoping that the transition to the new WLUG website was completely painless for you users. You will know that you are seeing the proper site if ***NEW*** appears near the top of the page. The DNS updates should have propagated around the Internet by now, so everybody should be seeing this. If somehow you are seeing the ***OLD*** site, please let me know and copy Chuck Anderson (cra(a)wpi.edu) also. XEmacs question - gnuserv/gnuclient
by Andy Stewart May 24, 2001

May 24, 2001

HI gang, I'm running XEmacs 21.1.8 and am playing with gnuserv/gnuclient. Within XEmacs, I do M-x gnuserv-start (which seems OK). In a terminal window on the same machine, I type gnuclient and another XEmacs window pops up quite quickly (as I expect). However, I can't get this to work from another machine on my home network. I played with the xauth stuff and also tried setting the GNU_SECURE environment variable to no avail. Clearly I've done something wrong but I don't know what. Can somebody walk me through the steps? I'm expecting that if I run gnuserv on machine 'tux' that I can set the security so that I can access that gnuserv process from machine 'andypc' by typing the correct incantation of the gnuclient command on 'andypc'. Thanks in advance, Andy -- Andy Stewart, Founder Worcester Linux Users' Group Worcester, MA USA http://www.wlug.org

Hostname
by Michael Long May 21, 2001

May 21, 2001

Thanks for the help with realaudio. Now it is working fine. My next question concerns how the hostname is published. When I look at the DHCP clients table provided by my router software the windoze boxes have published their hostname correctly but my linux box has published an incorrrect name. When I look at /etc/HOSTNAME the name is 'zeus' however then name that shows up in the clients table is '80'. What am I missing? thx, --mike

Question about employment opportunities
by Pierce C. Barnard May 21, 2001

May 21, 2001

Hi, I recently re-subscribed to the WLUG users newsletter. I would like to address the following question to all of the network administrators who are members of the WLUG: 1.) What is the best way to become a system administrator? 2.) What exact skills does an employer look for in a perspective client to be a system administrator? 3.) What advice and experience can you share with me? Thank you for your time.

compaq deskpro - the sequel; i have a viewsonic e771 monitor connected to the deskpro. i checked viewsonic's specs and found horizontal range 30-70khz vertical range 50-120hz both are what rh 70 installs and it does find the 771 although it is called e771-2 by rh. video card is a matrox mellinnium g200(generic) which is correct. i am using 16 bit 800x600. the pop sound is more like the monitor shutting off than any sort of safety device. the reason i want to install graphics is that i want to use webmin for configuration of samba apache etc. i am assuming that graphics has to be installed to use webmin. any other suggestions based on the info. above would be appreciated. thanks jim s. wlug-request(a)mail.wlug.org wrote: > > Message: 1 > To: wlug(a)mail.wlug.org > Subject: Re: [Wlug] compaq deskpro > From: Josh Huber <huber(a)alum.wpi.edu> > Date: 17 May 2001 15:00:50 -0400 > Reply-To: wlug(a)mail.wlug.org > > Jim Stith <stith2(a)earthlink.net> writes: > > [snip] > > In addition to what other people are saying, I have to ask -- why > would you want to install X on a server? > > Save disk space, save memory, and keep things simple. New WLUG website
by Andy Stewart May 20, 2001

May 20, 2001

HI everybody, The WLUG website has been moved to a new location. I'd like to thank Rob Bellville for hosting the WLUG website for us for the last 3.5 years! Unfortunately, the ISP that Rob was using is "going away" so the site needed a new home. Chuck Anderson has volunteered to host the WLUG website on his machine - thanks, Chuck! I will still maintain my role to keep the site up to date with meeting announcements and such. The change should be totally transparent to all of you. You will continue to access the site via: http://www.wlug.org You will know if you are seeing the new site since it says "**NEW**" near the top. As the DNS change is propagated around the Internet, eventually you'll all see the new site. Don't freak out if you don't catch the new site immediately...they both have identical content. I won't remove the files from the old site just yet until we're sure that the transition has been completed successfully. If you have problems accessing the site, please let me know. Thanks, Andy -- Andy Stewart, Founder Worcester Linux Users' Group Worcester, MA USA http://www.wlug.org

Thanks for the feedback. Resized the WinFAT32 partition successfully (lost no data). Linux partitions expanded (required reformatting that did wipe data.) System appears to remain stable. Colin

RealPlayer and Linksys
by Michael Long May 19, 2001

May 19, 2001

I have configured several boxes at home behind a Linksys router #BEFSR81. Both my windoze and linux boxes are able to connect through the router however Realaudio only connects through the router successfully on my windoze box. On the linux box I have installed it successfully but cannot get get it to connect through the router. What should I be looking at in order to solve this? I tried looking at preferences and tried Auto-Configure to no avail. Unfortunately I do not know what RTSP or PNA is or how to use it. Any help will be greatly appreciated. thx, mike

Shifting partitions?
by gwlt＠ma.ultranet.com May 18, 2001

May 18, 2001

A fast question: Anyone have experience with the stability of and general wisdom of shifting the Linux partition on a hard drive on a dual boot machine? I am trying to upgrade to a newer kernel and am presented with not enough memory on the Linux side of the drive. Encountered error message: <<An error occurred. Tour system has not enough space left for installation or upgrade (366821583>188726600)>> If the endeavor is too risky I can sacrifice the current Linux install, wipe the partition and install from scratch. (That does undermine the whole benefit of purchasing the proprietary upgrade package though.) Thanks. Colin
