samba printer config

I'm floundering trying to get my fedora 3 machine to act as a print server for an WinXP machine. The linux box is freshly built, and I just moved my printer from my redhat 9 machine. What works: 1. Local printing. It's a USB printer, and it worked just fine from the CUPS setup. What doesn't: 1. I can't "add printer" on the WinXP machine. 2. When I start the smb daemon, I get the following in the smbd log: [2005/01/22 18:14:51, 0] printing/nt_printing.c:nt_printing_init(383) nt_printing_init: error checking published printers: WERR_ACCESS_DENIED This looks like the problem to me, but I'm not sure. When I try to add the printer in WinXP, I get a popup "Windows cannot connect to the printer. Operation could not be completed." So, I'm stuck. (And under pressure -- my wife can't print!) Well... it's not being utterly depreciated, it's being superseded with "udev". Basically, the /dev directory has become dynamic. http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/kernel/hotplug/udev.html Explains it quite nicely. Tim. LTSP Linux Administration.

Howdy, We at the Worcester Computer Co-Op had an install fest a while ago where a few people said they might be able to do some administration for us. If anyone is still up to the task we would very much appreciate it. This is what we need. 1.Updating our network with new software (this can probably be done remotely?) 2.Getting more machines on the network( we have a strange system, but have 30 computers which are exactly the same and could be used for for the network. if someone could figure out how to get one on the network we could easily get all of them) Thanks to all who have helped in the past your time made it possible to give 10 computers to 10 families!!!! If I were you, I wouldn't just give those away... Tektronix printers are notoriously expensive... i.e our printer here costs a 1.50 everytime you hit the print button (but it'll print poster quality images) you might have good luck selling them on Ebay... Live Distro with VPN support

I apologize if this has already been discussed, but after some cursory googling and searching I haven't found an answer yet. I am the "computer guy" for our heating oil company. The heating oil software is running on a SCO box, and everyone in the office connects to it over our Windows network. After hours people need to connect to the SCO box to check customer information. Currently they do it through their own windoze PCs with their own high speed internet, or through a company laptop through dial up. Using their own high speed access makes things much quicker and we have subsidized access for some of the people. But since it is windows, their PCs are often screwed up, and I get many after hours calls saying, "I can't connect to the VPN or I can't connect to the Internet". I have played with Knoppix and absolutely love how it can recognize hardware, and I have installed Suse on a home system to play with for myself, but I have little knowledge of Linux. Is their a live CD like Knoppix that has microsoft VPN support, that the remote users can pop it in their system, restart, connect to the microsft VPN and open a terminal window to the SCO box? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks Sean Flynn

key mapping on Fedora 3

I'm a little surprised at the differences in default key mappings in F3 as compared to RH9. Maybe it's just me, but my old key mappings are "implanted" and so automatic that's it's unpleasant to adjust. One thing I miss is the ability to make the default edits act like emacs. In particular, RH9 had an option on the keyboard shortcuts to select either "gnome defaults" or "emacs". When I selected "emacs", that affected mozilla/firefox, so that traditional shortcuts (like <ctrl>u deleting all text on the URL box or a text entry box) worked like the "old days". Is there another way to do this, or do I need to learn new shortcuts? TIA, Bill
