If the compile screens, then DistCC is working, it just doesn't display it. Whoa, didn't mean to start a mini flame war! I think the portage system does wonders with the dependencies, and as I understand it portage is very BSD-like (I don't have any experience with BSD yet) with their package system. OK, one box boots up in 24 seconds (from GRUB menu to XDM login), and the other in 16 seconds (GRUB to CLI login). Now, thats a lot faster than default Red Hat installs, which can take minutes on a similarly capable machine. A good part of the faster bootup is that my Gentoo installation is, at least for now, much leaner than Red Hat and doesn't have to load as many daemons. But major distros like Red Hat, for compatibility sake, compile their code (or at least used to) as i386 for compatibility. Some have moved to i586. But my gentoo box is specifically compiled for the P4 with O3 compile flag. So that does speed things up a bit. Also, I run seti@home 24/7 on my personal boxes, so I never have any idle CPU percentages. On Red Hat seti@home would slow me down when I was really working the computer's resources. Haven't seen that happen yet in Gentoo. So, maybe its not the compiles that make it faster. But the capability to customize it, its inherent leanness (do I really want to install this if it takes 4 hours to compile)?, and its package system make it my linux distro of choice. It appears that at least a couple people here are using Gentoo. I am working on building a DistCC (Distributed C Compiling) network so that our "emerge -u world" and Stage 1 installations go by that much quicker. It has substantially improved my installation time - my first Stage 1 install, which did not use Distcc took nearly 3 days (some downtime was incurred since I had to sleep and go to class). With only 2 Pentium 4's and 1 Pentium 3, I was able to cut that time down to about 24 hours - the installation was on my 1.6Ghz Celeron, so you know that most of the compiling capabilities wasn't done on that! If you would like to use the Distcc network I'm putting together to get your Gentoo box running or to make emerge -u world that much quicker, all I ask is that you please run the Distcc server on your machine as well. For me honestly, it has to do with the fact that I got sick and tired of RedHat. I got tired of *rpm -qa | grep (some dependancy)* Do I feel like it sped things up from redhat, yeah! Do I like the fact that I've learned a ton about linux, not RedHat, yeah. (Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing RH, its just that *I* used RPMS as way too much of a crutch.) I like that I had evolution w/o ldap support, said "oh, I must have forgotten that flag", fixed the flag, and recompilied. Portage dl'd ldap for me, I didn't have to worry about deps...that's where gentoo really takes it for me. I've just read reports of using 3 days of CPU time to intall a gentoo system. My wimpy k6 system has over 98% idle cpu cycles - that's running i386 compiled debian code and a not totally trivial workload, it's a firewall, mail/web/dns server, and has a fair number of interactive users (15 as I write this, but it's still early in the day). My computer spends almost all of its time waiting for me. Any time that it doesn't spend waiting for me is spent waiting for I/O devices like disks and the network. If you want your computer to be faster, get yourself gobs of ram and run out of a ram disk. The cpu time is rarely the bottle. 3 days to save something that I'm only using 3% of... Setting up postfix and mailman

I've followed the instructions for setting up postfix to use both /etc/mail/aliases and /usr/local/mailman/data/aliases for alias maps. I've configured mailman so it know it's using postfix for the MTA. I've created the mailman list and another list to test. However when I try and send mail to the list, I get the following error: Mar 3 14:35:55 carnation postfix/local[6154]: C39852E25C: to=<officers(a)tkezm.org>, relay=local, delay=0, status=bounced (unknown user: "officers") Now I know that receiving and sending mail works on this box because I've tested it for local users. Any help would be much appreciated since I'm at my wits end and I can't find anything else on the subject.
