Earlier this week I installed a minimalist configuration of RH 8.0 on my old Thinkpad 365XD (P133/40MB/6GB). The configuration works fine except for being slow due to lack of processor and memory (40 MB RAM is max'd). The only snag I ran into was a hang on install just before the first RPM installs. The machine locked up there twice during the text install. I found this lockup only happened to me doing a "custom" install and not the "workstation" install. RH 8.0 does seem improved over RH 7.X in terms of the quality of fonts and GUI mods. I also found more things I could quickly disable features to make life bearable on this old hardware (wallpaper,menu icons,etc). Unfortunately, I have not tried other distributions yet and cannot intelligently compare them to RH 7.X or 8.0. My next step is to find a very small window manager to hopefully make this machine perform reasonably in X. Currently I am considering replacing the default Gnome with either IceWM and Enlightenment. Where can I get detail documentation about Sendmail and Qmail ? I mean, the documentations on their site both are meaningless for me. Well, it's all just about the the pop3, smtp, virtualhost, etc. Thanks!

I'm looking at some software I have to build at work, and I'm trying to work with RedHat 8.0, even though I don't have it yet. I'm curious about a particulare "binary" package: kernel-source-2.4.18-14.i386.rpm and similarly: glibc-kernheaders-2.4-7.20.i386.rpm These are clearly source files. How do they compare with: kernel-2.4.18-14.src.rpm ???? In particular, I'd like to try building my package (targeting 8.0) on my 7.2 box. (Maybe that's unrealistic. It's a fibre HBA driver module.) At any rate, why the mixup with the "sources"? And, why would header files be non-relocatable on the install? (At least the kernel headers are with 7.2. TIA, Bill

You should be able to specify with options in the conf.modules or modules.conf when the module loads which IRQ to use. I'm sorry I didn't follow this thread from the start, but I can explain how we have Samba setup at our client site: We are running Samba 2.2.2 on the server side (Solaris 2.6 or 2.7) with mostly Windows 2000 clients connecting on the client side. When I want to map my home directory from my Windows 2000 client, I use Map Network Drive and supply the following information: Drive: <some letter> Folder: \\clemens\simoncim When I hit finish, it maps my Unix home directory without any problems.

samba shares & win98 usernames

I want to set up some samba shares to be mounted on my win98 box, and I'd like to protect the shares with usernames and passwords, but I can't remember how to specify a username from the win98 box. I seem to remember a way by adding the username to the share spec, but I can't find any documentation on the subject. Any ideas? Or should I use a different approach? (I have 3 kids & a wife who are mainly windows users, but will sometimes use my linux box. I'd like them to be able to read/write their files from either machine.) TIA, Bill

Hi all, I got mandrake 9.0 on my laptop (now XP-less, smile) and I love it. However, I've got two problems.... 1. My usb devices are not accepting addresses, I've got a dmesg log in a file if you want to see it. 2. I can't get tpconfig to work! Does anyone know if the patch was pre-installed for tpconfig in previous mdk's? I used to be able to install the rpm and it just worked, now it doesn't work at all (and I hate "tapping"). Thanks gang, I learn a lot from this list! Wes

Well, about my problem in upgrading my remote server with the latest version of openssl, apache and other its need to avoid getting the error.... Just wanna tell u this, you might be need it, if not... just ignore it.... ;p Well, at the first time, before removing the available openssl, you might have to enable the TELNET CONNECTION first. It's better to completely remove the available openssl first, but remember to ENABLE THE TELNET CONNECTION first. After removing the old openssl, you can not make any other SSH connection to your remote machine. You have got to do this fast, do not let the TELNET CONNECTION enable for a long time period. Get the latest openssl in www.openssl.com, and follow the instruction. Dont be affraid of libcrypto.* proble. Just configured the openssl installation with shared (./configure --prefix=/YOUR_OPENSSL_DIR_TARGET --openssldir=/YOUR_OPENSSL_DIR_TARGET shared) That's the main idean that I would like to say, shared. It's automatically created the latest file of libcrypto.* and other its need. Simple, make the duplicate of the needed file and create a link from a defined .so as .so asked. Then, you can simply close the TELNET CONNECTION (using chkconfig --level 3 telnet off - Redhat) and re-enabling the ssh connection by typing /etc/rc.d/init.d/sshd restart) Good Luck...... ;p
