I have Charter in Holden, and it's been excellent. I would call them though... it still takes about 10 minutes to get through, but I have only had to call them once with a problem in the past year. I agree with Tim. PPPoE is a pain, but if you have a router (Linksys Befsr41) it's essentially transparent except for maybe a few % performance. Hey, when my point of reference was a 56k modem that got a sustained throughput of 5kb a second, crappy DSL will always be better than great modem service. I agree that the PPPoE stuff is crap. As for the NAT stuff, I'm using a netgear RP114 that provides DHCP/NAT/PPPoE plus it does port forwarding of ssh to my linux box and I'm yet to have a problem. Though as always, don't call the tech support, you'd have better luck jabbing a chopstick in your eye. Verizon got a lot of bad press (probably deserved) but for the past 8 months at least my service in Framingham has been very solid. The news servers are so slow as to be almost useless and there's a funny restriction about what domain must be used to send e-mail, but neither of those really affect me. iPAQ 3835 and linux?

Hi everyone, Well, I just traded in my old iPAQ and got the new 3835 (games are possible at last, yea!!!). This version comes with serial connector, along with the usb one. This means that, finally, I can get the boot loader installed on my iPAQ and run linux! Couple of questions first, though... Has anyone run linux on this version yet? The hardware is essentially the same, but you never know... Which version should I install? Is yopy's distro available? What about zarus'? Should I use embedded QT, or go with a straight familiar distro using blackbox? Does embedded linux able to mount filesystems on secure memory cards? Just need to know in case I want to get one. Where are good places to get software for embedded linux? Any good games/emulators? What about running pocketPC software? Has anyone screwed with their spouse's head by using the universal remote yet? I'm looking foward to wiping 2002 off my iPAQ, it's got the ugly "kindergarden" interface that helps me despise XP so much. Wes

WLUG Meeting TONIGHT Wed Nov 14th

Hi Everybody, Unfortunately, I will be unable to attend this evening's WLUG meeting due to a rotten cold and a low grade fever which I seem to have picked up somewhere. I would encourage all of you to meet this evening, and some brave soul who has been in WLUG for a long time can get up and run the meeting in my absence. Have a beer for me at the Boynton! Here is what I had planned to report to the group this evening. I would like somebody to read this to the group in case folks haven't checked their e-mail before the meeting. 1) WLUG financials I have consolidated the accounts so that all of the WLUG money is in an account at the Lowell Five bank in Chelmsford, MA. I just paid the $50 fee to join the Boston User Groups as was voted at a previous WLUG meeting, and I wrote myself a $75 check for refreshments for the calendar year 2001. That leaves us with approx. $575.00 in the bank, which has been raised through your donations as well as install fest proceeds. 2) Annual Linux Showcase This event was not attended nearly as well as in past years, due in part to the fear of flying and by the fact that many computer people have been recently laid off. There were only half as many vendors as in the past, again due to the economy, I suspect. I found the quality of the techinical talks to be very good. I heard talk that there wouldn't be an ALS next year, but that Maddog was pushing for a small number of more local conferences, perhaps one in Boston. Some cool things which I saw at ALS: a) Linux running on a Compaq iPAQ, one running X and an xterm, the other running Qt Embedded with a bunch of PDA like applications. Refer to http://www.handhelds.org for more information. b) Latest versions of Gnome and KDE in action c) A large number of kernel hackers (including Linus) on one room d) A cluster of small embedded computers built by Los Alamos National Labs, all running Linux out of FLASH memory. e) A great beer selection at the Pacific Coast Brewing Company I personally spoke to Jim Gettys and a representative from the Free Software Foundation (I think his name was Brad, but I have his card). I might be able to get one or both of these folks to come to WLUG to give a talk in the future. I guess I'll have to save the freebies until next month. See ya later, and have a great meeting! installing Bugzilla

I missed the last install-fest, and am anxiously awaiting the next one. I'm considering deploying Bugzilla in my group, and was wondering if anyone has experience installing it, or even opinions about using it. The doc sends mixed messages about the complexity of the install: "Bugzilla is not a package where you can just plop it in a directory, twiddle a few things, and you're off." and then later on... "Installation of Bugzilla is pretty straightforward." The doc also makes it pretty clear that it'll run on Windows, but that there's additional complexity. It even sounds like it'll be easier to install on OSX than on Win2k, and that's fine with me. thanks in advance for any opinions, Rick Gansler

Gary, I own the same router as you and I've got 2 linux boxes (one is pure, the other is duel boot). I just have static host files because the router has a sane DHCP server that assigns based on MAC address, so all your machines will keep the same address, regardless of OS. DCHP Private IP Hostname Resolution

Greetings, I suspect this is an easy fix but somehow I can't find it.... I just installed a Netgear RP114 DSL router and I'm letting it set my private IPs with DCHP. My problem is that I need to resolve the hostnames between the 3 Linux machines on my private lan and the router isn't doing that. When they are booted in Windows the DCHP table shows the IP and hostname of each PC, but when booted in Linux the router doesn't resolve the hostname to IP...so when I ping a hostname I get nothing. Raw IO Howto

Folks, I'd like to be able to queue read/write request to my Zip drive and bypass the buffering that goes on in the kernel. From what I've read, you can do this by binding the raw device (/dev/raw) to /dev/hdc1 for example. When I do that, I get a message that /dev/raw/raw1 has ben bound to char major 22 1. When I try open("/dev/raw/raw1",O_RDWR|O_CREAT,S_IREAD|S_IWRITE); it fails. Can someone tell me how to do this please? Thanks, Skip

irda help

Hi gang, I've finally gotten the irDa stack working in my dell laptop (why, oh why is it disabled by default in the BIOS?). Here's my problem; I'm having trouble having the ppp connection being authenticated when a connection is made. My iPaq connects, has the host name of my laptop ok; but stalls there. I've followed the steps on the ir-howto, and it's what got me to this point, but there's no troubleshooting help for this particular problem. Here's the command I run to start the attachement... irattach /dev/ttyS2 -s 1 At this point my iPaq tries to authenticate, and then stalls. I would REALLY like to be able to transfer data between my iPaq and my laptop; and since I haven't heard of anyone being able to connect an iPaq to Linux via a USB cable, this looks like my best shot (besides, I really want to learn ir so I can control my TV from my laptop). Anyone got some ideas, if you help me solve it I'll try and submit something to the HOWTO so others can work around it. Wes

SSH and tunneling

HI gang, I would like to be able to setup some kind of tunnel so that I can use SSH to log into my machine at home and forward the X11 display. Currently, I can successfully SSH into my firewall, and from there either telnet or SSH into the machine of interest on my home network. This works OK for text but not for X. So, let's say for sake of argument that I am on a computer at the Linux Showcase in California. How can I set this up so that I can tunnel through my home firewall to the machine of interest on my home network and have the X display from the home machine forward to the machine at the conference? I think its just a matter of syntax on the SSH command line, but I can't seem to get it right. FYI, I'm using OpenSSH version 2.9.9p2, which I believe is the latest. Hey I just checked slashdot and they took my submission about the VM (per Brians "An excellent read") I actually mentioned that I got the scoop from a fellow Lugger and mentioned WLUG, but it looks like they just gave me a name drop. Normally I try to refrain from posting links, especially since I'm sure a lot of people read LinuxToday, but this one was worth it. It's an excellent article on the whole 2.4 VM extravaganza, including the two implementations at war in the Linus and AC trees, kernel preemption, and some background information. It's a little biased towards the AA/Linus VM, but more informative than anything else.
