VNC performance

Hi All, I remember some time ago talking with Andy, and others about VNC performance at a wlug meeting. I remember that setting the depth 8 will help performance, as well as disabling the wallpaper. I am running the server on windows, and the client on a linux machine. VNC's site has info for disabling wallpaper, but it seems to involve editing a registry file. When i try to do so, i get an access denied message, because that file is read only. Can someone help me out here? I really know very little about windows. On the client side, the option '-depth 8' doesn't seem to do very much i get '16 bits per pixel'. If anyone knows of any other methods for speeding up VNC, please post. Thanks, --Brad

My $.02 I personally own a Sonic blue Rio Volt and really like it. I've never heard of the iriver, but oh well. Things I really like about the Rio Volt 1. 10 hours of music per CD (with 128bit mp3's). 2. doesn't use some weirdo proprietary storage device that they'll stop manufacturing 6 months from now. 3. Can play regular CD's. This weighed heavily into getting a CD based device. I'm not going to carry an mp3 player and a CD player. Invariably, I go some where and someone's got a CD they want to listen to... 4. supports different bit depths on mp3's. My advisor got a cheaper CD based mp3 player and it just assumes that everything's 128bit. His 96bit hotel California mp3 sounds like "Alvin and the chipmunks do the eagles greatest hits" 5. has a recessed switch to disable the controls on the unit. You don't know how many sets of batteries I killed in my Sony Discman because I'd put it in my backpack and the buttons would get pressed and it would play Ride the lightning over and over. 6. The controls are good but a bit esoteric. I've got a CD with the complete works of Pink Floyd on it, organized as "albums as subdirectories" so its got ~156 songs. Until you understand the controls (or read the instructions) finding a single song is a bit mind bending. 7. It has a 40 second cache so the battery life is pretty long. Things I don't like about the Rio Volt: 1. The volume sucks on it. The ear bud headphones are just a complete waste, unless your dumbo. You'll want a pair of headphones with their own gain volume. 2. The battery cover opens easily, not really a big deal, but annoying. 3. Can't recharge batteries in the device. My old discman does this, why couldn't these guys? 4. Those stupid dancing people and that spinning CD icon (which looks a lot like the fan icon on the front of a Sun E1000 fibre array). I would have ditched the people and made the text display larger so you could put more info on it. (in the same vein I would have dumped the stupid fan icon and put "FAN BROKE" but that's just me...:) I'll bring my mp3 player with me to the next wlug meeting so anybody who wants to check it out are welcome. It is, of course, a little more expensive. Essentially, it's from the same company who OEM's the RioVolt line, but the trick is, they water down their products for the American market. There are a few things that the iRiver has that the RioVolt doesn't. 1.) LCD on the remote control. I don't know how much this interests people, but it's a nice little feature. Also, I believe those stupid dancing people that everyone so widely hated do not appear on the iRiver. 2.) I've been told by people experienced in both players that there are much more frequent firmware revisions for the iRiver. Oh, and this is a good place to mention that this is the feature that made me wanna buy it. As patches/fixes/upgrades are made for the player, you can d/l firmware upgrades, burn them to a cd, and run them in the player. One thing that really interested me is that, on the iRiver site http://www.iriver.com/english/imp250.htm they mention the potential implementation of the OGG Vorbis format, which I'm a big fan of, (no royalties threatened like MP3.) This is something I haven't seen mentioned for the American version, but who knows. One other thing I should mention. You'll need a power converter for this model. :) If anyone does end up with this player, please post your impressions on the list. I haven't completely made up my mind yet whether I want to pay more. MP3 Player recommendations

HI gang, Christmas is coming, and I'm thinking about asking Santa for a portable MP3 player. Of course, it needs to work with Linux. Judging from the looks of the CDs which I've ripped into MP3 files, 32 MB of memory looks like it might be a tad small for a single CD, while 64 MB looks like it might do the trick for loading up around 2 CDs worth of music. Is this a fair assessment? Since I use compact flash for my digital camera, any MP3 player that uses this medium should probably get extra consideration, I would think. Whenever I had to add a device live, there's a thing with /proc/scsi/scsi that you can do (this is from the SCSI Programming HOWTO): Dynamically insert and remove SCSI devices If a newer kernel and the /proc file system is running, a non-busy device can be removed and installed 'on the fly'. linuxconf/7.1?

I put together a RedHat 7.1 machine recently and was surprised to find that linuxconf was not part of the default installation. It's clearly improved over older versions of linuxconf, so why isn't it installed? Anyone know why? Thanks, Bill

Forcing scsi probe on the fly...

Does anybody know with Redhat 7.1 (using 2.4.2-2) if theirs a way to force the scsi chain to rescan its bus (without an unload/reload) of the module? so far, I haven't found something like HPUX's ioscan. Thanks, Tim.

I've had really good luck with Verizon DSL (get about 70-80k a second + no down time). In Worcester you might want to check out Speakeasy. A couple people in WLUG use them and are happy. I have Charter in Holden, and it's been excellent. I would call them though... it still takes about 10 minutes to get through, but I have only had to call them once with a problem in the past year. I agree with Tim. PPPoE is a pain, but if you have a router (Linksys Befsr41) it's essentially transparent except for maybe a few % performance. Hey, when my point of reference was a 56k modem that got a sustained throughput of 5kb a second, crappy DSL will always be better than great modem service. I agree that the PPPoE stuff is crap. As for the NAT stuff, I'm using a netgear RP114 that provides DHCP/NAT/PPPoE plus it does port forwarding of ssh to my linux box and I'm yet to have a problem. Verizon got a lot of bad press (probably deserved) but for the past 8 months at least my service in Framingham has been very solid. The news servers are so slow as to be almost useless and there's a funny restriction about what domain must be used to send e-mail, but neither of those really affect me. iPAQ 3835 and linux?

Hi everyone, Well, I just traded in my old iPAQ and got the new 3835 (games are possible at last, yea!!!). This version comes with serial connector, along with the usb one. This means that, finally, I can get the boot loader installed on my iPAQ and run linux! Couple of questions first, though... Has anyone run linux on this version yet? The hardware is essentially the same, but you never know... Which version should I install? Is yopy's distro available? What about zarus'? Should I use embedded QT, or go with a straight familiar distro using blackbox? Does embedded linux able to mount filesystems on secure memory cards? Just need to know in case I want to get one. Where are good places to get software for embedded linux? Any good games/emulators? What about running pocketPC software? Has anyone screwed with their spouse's head by using the universal remote yet? I'm looking foward to wiping 2002 off my iPAQ, it's got the ugly "kindergarden" interface that helps me despise XP so much. Wes

WLUG Meeting TONIGHT Wed Nov 14th

Hi Everybody, Unfortunately, I will be unable to attend this evening's WLUG meeting due to a rotten cold and a low grade fever which I seem to have picked up somewhere. I would encourage all of you to meet this evening, and some brave soul who has been in WLUG for a long time can get up and run the meeting in my absence. Have a beer for me at the Boynton! Here is what I had planned to report to the group this evening. I would like somebody to read this to the group in case folks haven't checked their e-mail before the meeting. 1) WLUG financials I have consolidated the accounts so that all of the WLUG money is in an account at the Lowell Five bank in Chelmsford, MA. I just paid the $50 fee to join the Boston User Groups as was voted at a previous WLUG meeting, and I wrote myself a $75 check for refreshments for the calendar year 2001. That leaves us with approx. $575.00 in the bank, which has been raised through your donations as well as install fest proceeds. 2) Annual Linux Showcase This event was not attended nearly as well as in past years, due in part to the fear of flying and by the fact that many computer people have been recently laid off. There were only half as many vendors as in the past, again due to the economy, I suspect. I found the quality of the techinical talks to be very good. I heard talk that there wouldn't be an ALS next year, but that Maddog was pushing for a small number of more local conferences, perhaps one in Boston. Some cool things which I saw at ALS: a) Linux running on a Compaq iPAQ, one running X and an xterm, the other running Qt Embedded with a bunch of PDA like applications. Refer to http://www.handhelds.org for more information. b) Latest versions of Gnome and KDE in action c) A large number of kernel hackers (including Linus) on one room d) A cluster of small embedded computers built by Los Alamos National Labs, all running Linux out of FLASH memory. e) A great beer selection at the Pacific Coast Brewing Company I personally spoke to Jim Gettys and a representative from the Free Software Foundation (I think his name was Brad, but I have his card). installing Bugzilla

I missed the last install-fest, and am anxiously awaiting the next one. I'm considering deploying Bugzilla in my group, and was wondering if anyone has experience installing it, or even opinions about using it. The doc sends mixed messages about the complexity of the install: "Bugzilla is not a package where you can just plop it in a directory, twiddle a few things, and you're off." and then later on... "Installation of Bugzilla is pretty straightforward." The doc also makes it pretty clear that it'll run on Windows, but that there's additional complexity. It even sounds like it'll be easier to install on OSX than on Win2k, and that's fine with me. thanks in advance for any opinions, Rick Gansler

Gary, I own the same router as you and I've got 2 linux boxes (one is pure, the other is duel boot). I just have static host files because the router has a sane DHCP server that assigns based on MAC address, so all your machines will keep the same address, regardless of OS. DCHP Private IP Hostname Resolution

Greetings, I suspect this is an easy fix but somehow I can't find it.... I just installed a Netgear RP114 DSL router and I'm letting it set my private IPs with DCHP. My problem is that I need to resolve the hostnames between the 3 Linux machines on my private lan and the router isn't doing that. When they are booted in Windows the DCHP table shows the IP and hostname of each PC, but when booted in Linux the router doesn't resolve the hostname to IP...so when I ping a hostname I get nothing. Any ideas? Thanks! -- Gary

Raw IO Howto

Folks, I'd like to be able to queue read/write request to my Zip drive and bypass the buffering that goes on in the kernel. From what I've read, you can do this by binding the raw device (/dev/raw) to /dev/hdc1 for example. When I do that, I get a message that /dev/raw/raw1 has ben bound to char major 22 1. When I try open("/dev/raw/raw1",O_RDWR|O_CREAT,S_IREAD|S_IWRITE); it fails. Can someone tell me how to do this please? Thanks, Skip

irda help

Hi gang, I've finally gotten the irDa stack working in my dell laptop (why, oh why is it disabled by default in the BIOS?). Here's my problem; I'm having trouble having the ppp connection being authenticated when a connection is made. My iPaq connects, has the host name of my laptop ok; but stalls there. I've followed the steps on the ir-howto, and it's what got me to this point, but there's no troubleshooting help for this particular problem. Here's the command I run to start the attachement... irattach /dev/ttyS2 -s 1 At this point my iPaq tries to authenticate, and then stalls. I would REALLY like to be able to transfer data between my iPaq and my laptop; and since I haven't heard of anyone being able to connect an iPaq to Linux via a USB cable, this looks like my best shot (besides, I really want to learn ir so I can control my TV from my laptop). Anyone got some ideas, if you help me solve it I'll try and submit something to the HOWTO so others can work around it. Wes
