I had a really bad experience trying to buy a 1U server from a vendor
I saw in Linux Journal, thinking I'd support a "linux-friendly"
company. Well, after they charged my CC, it took them 3 *weeks* to
start the system burn-in, the system *failed* burn-in, they said it
would take at least another week... so I finally told them to screw
off and got my money back.
I ended up buying a dirt-cheap 1U Celeron (Cybertron) from
TigerDirect, which I colo'd with a Level3 reseller in Cambridge. Its
been humming along for 2 years so far.
So if you're willing forego the "value add" (pronounced with dripping
sarcasm and doing the "quotes" motion with my fingers) that some
vendors might provide, and you can install and configure your own
Linux distro, you might try TigerDirect or another generic online
vendor.
