ACM Installfest

The Worcester Area Student Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery will be hosting an Installfest on March 27th from 6-9PM. It will be on WPI Campus in Higgins Lab 116. Veterans and newbies to Linux are welcome! If you are an experienced user, we will start setting up at 5PM, and you are welcome to show up then. We will be advertising heavily around campus, so hopefully we can attract some new users! We will be distributing and installing Mandrake, Debian, Knoppix, and Gentoo, although more distributions are certainly welcome. Reminder: Upcoming WLUG meeting

Hi everybody, This is a reminder about the upcoming WLUG meeting, to be held at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, February 25, 2004 at the usual place (the Access Grid room, WPI campus, Worcester, MA USA). Detailed directions can be found on the WLUG webpage. At this meeting, our featured speaker is J.D. "Illiad" Frazer, the author of the comic strip UserFriendly. You can read the comic strip at http:// www.userfriendly.org. There are more details, such as biographical information, and an explanation of the comic strip's characters, linked from the WLUG home page. This meeting will be broadcast onto the Access Grid. For those who don't know, the Access Grid can be considered to be video conferencing on steroids. Read more about it at this site: http://www.accessgrid.org. There are only a few such sites in all of New England, but there are almost 200 sites worldwide: Boston University Worcester Polytechnic Institute Dartmouth Univ. of Maine - Orono I am going to try to get to Softpro and see if I can pick up a couple of UserFriendly books for the raffle. As usual, light refreshments will be served. After the meeting, we'll adjourn to some local restaurant. I'm not sure, but I think the Boynton Restaurant is still undergoing major renovations and is thus closed. In that event, we can probably go to the mexican place (Tortilla Sams, I think its called). Hi all A friend sent me the following. Thought you guys might enjoy it. I was having trouble with my computer. So I called the computer guy, to come over. He clicked a couple of buttons and solved the problem and gave me a bill for a minimum service call. As he was walking away, I called after him, "So, what was wrong?" He replied, "It was an `ID ten T' error." I didn't want to appear stupid, but nonetheless inquired: "An, ID ten T error? What's that .... In case I need to fix it again?" I just saw this on one of the other lists I'm on and I'm testing it out and it seems to work. http://shfs.sourceforge.net/ It lets you mount a remote filesystem over an SSH link. ala mount -t shfs root@someserver /mnt/localmntpnt Very cool. Tim.

Hi. I bought a Ximeta Netdisk (http://ximeta.com/products/netdisk.html) which is an external HDD with both USB and network connectivity. The company explicitly states that the device works with Red Hat 8 and 9, but I've had no luck with it. The drivers are available only as RPMs, no source provided. It's network attached, but it doesn't use a standard protocol. The RPM is supposed to install two modules, nd.o and lpx.o, but they don't show up with lsmod. When I try to load them with insmod or modprobe, I get a bunch of error messages about "unresolved symbols". I though it may have been a dependency problem, so I recompiled to load network block device (nbd.o), but that had no effect. I've tried both RH 8 and 9 fresh stock installs with the same results. Ximeta has stated that they will provide me a new driver, but I'm not holding my breath. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Setiathome is a good distributed program http://www.setiathome.com as well as gimps (can't remember the url). Seti is the Search for ExtraTerrestrial Life(be verry verry quiet, I'm hunting for aliens, huhuhuh).
