Some kind of email loop started on my system yesterday that generated a
huge inbox (> 20 GB) on my system. It was detecting a relay loop and
then emailing the error which triggered another one. Each email was
larger than the last because it contained an account of all the
previous errors. After cleaning everything up, I rebooted because
some processes had failed due to lack of memory.
After rebooting to runlevel 5, I could not get back to graphics mode,
at least a visible graphics screen.…
[View More] Although I can sometimes get a
graphics screen showing boot progress, it never gets to the splash
screen. Everything from the text/console screens looks normal. I
have not found any errors in the system log. I've tried switching
monitors, and get the same result.
Now I've noticed errors in my logwatch email for the last 2 days (same
error twice):
--------------------- Kernel Begin ------------------------
WARNING: Kernel Errors Present

---------------------- Kernel End -------------------------
Because I had not previously noticed this error, I was thinking that
the video problem was hardware -- I was starting to look for a
replacement video card. Now I'm not so sure.
What do these kernel errors mean?
Where are they logged?
Are the problems related (kernel errors & video problem)?
Any opinion whether this is a hardware or software problem?
TIA,
Bill

Woah, that is a mouthful huh? I am in dire need for one of those brackets.
Does anyone have a spare? I have googled it and its about 1.50 part, but 8
bucks to ship. Go figure. I was wondering if anyone had one they could
bring tomorrow night. It looks like this:

I was told (incorrectly, I guess)that Fedora had incorporated ALSA. What sound card support does Core 6 offer? Is my problem just that the SoundBlaster Live is unique?
Ken Jones
I solved my Fedora Core 6 sound card problem.
I found and rpm'd these files:
alsa-driver-1.0.13-56.fc6.at.i386.rpm
alsa-kmdl-2.6.18-1.2849.fc6-1.0.13-56.fc6.at.i586.rpm
For some reason alsa files are not part of:
<http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/updates/6/i386/>
Similarly my 'yum' can not find them.
Now I can not remember where I did find them.
Why was this so difficult? What is it that I do not understand about
the Fedora …
[View More]packages? Some folks told me that ALSA was part of Core 6.
I was using ALSA with Core 4.
I thank you all for your efforts :-)

When I first installed CORE 6 it booted just fine.
Now it hangs and gives the message snipped below. If I do [CNTRL C] it
finishes. It says that it can not find Linux/version.h where it thinks
it should be. I have erased the kernel-devel package. Why is it
trying to compile? It is referring to a SMP version. I do not see the
string SMP anywhere in the REDHAT download page
<http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/updates/6/i386/>.
What do you think is going on?

---------------start snip----------
No prebuilt modules for: Fedora - 6 linux-2.6.18-1.2849.fc6.i686-SMP.
Trying to automatically build the driver modules. (This requires a C
compiler and proper kernel sources to be installed)
WARNING - Missing file /usr/src/linux/include/linux/version.h. The
cause of this is usually a missing or unconfigured kernel source tree
(and sometimes an incorrect directory or symbolic link.)
However, proper /boot/config-2.6.18-1.2849.fc6 was found.
---------------end snip-----------
As I said. At this point the little spinning icon is busy. The
progression bar is not progressing. CNTRL-C initiales a successful
finish of the boot.
