FYI, a stream ripper (as I've very recently learned) is a program which "listens" to a streaming audio broadcast and saves that information on your hard drive. Streaming audio broadcasts are available on shoutcast.com and icecast.org, and probably many other places. I'm using a program called 'streamripper' (strangely enough) which I found at http://streamripper.sourceforge.net/. I'm wondering what others might be using. It has a feature where songs can be saved as individual .mp3 (or .ogg) files, or the whole stream can be saved in one file. I've downloaded these songs into my portable MP3 player for later enjoyment. There seems to be some controversy about the use of such programs. Frankly, I don't see it as any different than holding a microphone in front of the radio. Granted, the quality is much better with a ripper. Prior to learning something about stream rippers, I had been using the Ogg encoder output feature of xmms while xmms was "tuned" to a streaming audio broadcast. As I understand it, this involves taking the stream source (an MP3 stream generally) and re-encoding it into the Ogg format, which technically involves a loss of quality (can I hear it? I'm not sure...). MythTV vs. Tivo

So I've been thinking about picking up a PVR card and turning an old machine I have lying around into a MythTV box to replace my tivo to get rid of that nasty monthly fee. Does anyone have any comments on the comparisons between the two? Will I miss my tivo? Does mythtv have equivelant options for season passes or recommentations? Thanks, -Marc

Our meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, August 10th at 7:00 PM. What will we discuss this month? I was hoping somebody had an iRivier or iPod MP3 player with the Linux software working that would bring it to the meeting to demo it, but so far, nobody has volunteered. (iRiver, iPod, iAudio, for what does the 'i' stand - individual??). One possible area of interest is directory services (LDAP). I don't think we've ever had a talk on that subject. Its my understanding that LDAP is good for more than just creating a giant list of email addresses for an organization. Another possible idea would be a talk about databases. What are the differences between MySQL and PostgreSQL - are they technical or is this a religious war? OK, I've tossed out a few ideas, but to make it work, we need a volunteer. Portable MP3 (and ogg) players and Linux

Server configuration

Hi, I am building web/database server and am looking for some installation advice. The system will have an IDE boot drive for the OS and a raid for the data files. Is there an advantage to partitioning the raid drive so that the web content is on one partition and the database files are on another or am I better off keeping it as a single partition. Alright, on my quest to retrieve files I left on a server back in Baltimore I have decided to download VPN client for Linux and try that. I have not succeeded. My client in MA has a need for a Sr/Prin level Linux kernel engineer on a contract basis. Consultant will assist with the integration effort of the Linux kernel to a PowerPC-based platform, and will also assist in the development of a variety of Linux drivers, including some work with third-party drivers. Not enough exposure to the Sun

I was looking to get some exposure to Solaris and Sun "stuff". Anyone have suggestions or any old, but good, Solaris equipment? I know nothing about Sun stuff, but I guess the Sparc line is there desktop/workstation line? Any info is greatly apreciated! Howdy! We covered a few topics tonight, including this one: http://news.com.com/2008-1082_3-5065859.html?tag=lh and this one: http://www.justlinux.com/forum/showthread.php?t=141352 And more discussions about gentoo vs (insert distro here). We covered some iPod things, and maybe helped someone with a perl script. I showed off my little Dell L700 laptop and enlightenment desktop manager...very lightweight and has nice eye candy, but no icons. Lots of discussions around Intel and AMD as well...hopefully we will see that pdf regarding the lawsuit... Also, I was just slashdot'ing: Linux: Unsealed SCO Email Reveals Linux Code is Clean Posted by CowboyNeal on Thursday July 14, @06:53PM from the we-tried-to-tell dept. rm69990 writes "In a recently unsealed email in the SCO vs. IBM case, it appears that an outside consultant, hired by SCO in 2002, failed to find copyright violations in the Linux Kernel.
