I saw a project to create an FOSS bluetooth speaker using a Pi 4! I've also seen people using pi's to create spotify streamers as well. This is of interest to me as my sonos gear is getting older, I'd like some open options. Beyond that I just know there will be interesting things people want to talk about, there always is! In other news in Oct. Dick Miller will be speaking at WLUG! I'd like to start thinking about what we'd like to talk about in Nov. As the web changes and the technologies underpinning complex websites grow and evolve, managing all this by hand becomes nearly impossible. Load balancers, database servers.. Now what if this website also needs to be scaled across cloud providers and on prem? What happens when your favorite cloud company whose data center is just a bunch of shipping containers burns to the ground? How easily could you reconstitute your website and all the underpinnings? Althea is going to speak to how they deploy their website and manages the entire process as code. I'd like to thank Chuck for facilitating getting Althea in contact with us. Simple IP KVM

Has anyone used or built one of these? https://github.com/pikvm/pikvm/ It looks really interesting way to get a reasonably cheap IP KVM for home use. Though with the pain of getting RPi4s these days... it's going to take me a while to actually build one. Not sure if I wnat to spend $160 for the HAT though... the slightly flaky USB dongle so I can see my home server screen when needed it's probably more than enough. John

Free Dell PowerSwitch 5324

Guys, I've got a free Dell PowerSwitch 5324, it's 24 1gb ports and I replaced the loud fans with some quieter ones, but now the fan error light is always on. Is anyone interested in this? It works great, it's just old and I wanted to move to all TP-Link at home to manage it all with Omada. Sorta good idea... Fiber internet options in Worcester

Hey all, My wife and I have been on the market for a home, and we feel that Worcester would be a great city for us to move to. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Worcester has much if any options for fiber internet which is important for both of us working from home. The fastest provider appears to be Spectrum, and I've heard only bad things about them. Last I heard, Worcester has been held down by a monopoly from Spectrum, and I don't know if the city government has been working to change this with municipal fiber or trying to get other ISPs in the area to improve competition. It seems like the kind of issue that network engineers from WPI could assist with. Anyone have more information on this? - Josh

They're looking to hire a mechanical engineer where I work, and talking about how a lot of the best candidates have been from WPI. That got me thinking about one guy who'd been at several meetings, and graduated maybe 2 years ago, though I don't think he was an engineering major. He had a legendary appetite and I think he moved to Nashua. I'm pretty sure his name had 2 syllables and started with 'S'. I keep thinking "Salman", but I'm pretty sure that's wrong. Hey Gang, I'd like to start by apologizing. There's been some illness and other stuff going on and I've focused a bit less on WLUG than I'd like. Thankfully things are getting sorted out at my end and I will be focusing much more on WLUG. Tonight the meeting is going to be online. With the late announcement combined with only myself and John in person, it makes more sense to just have it online for this month. I plan on reaching out to the WPI people and seeing about doing in person meetings there for August hopefully. I'd also like to have a WLUG bbq at some point as well. Hey Everybody! We've got a meeting tonight!! Location: Hudson Public Library Time: 7pm Topic: Intel Pocket PC running RetroArch, etc. I was given four of these tiny pocket pc's. I'm going to run RetroArch on one and see what we get. I also think they'd be cool as a plex driver for a TV as well. Beyond that, there's a lot going on in the linux world, from the Intel pay for features stuff to the Nvidia opening up ( a tiny bit ). We should also talk about where we'd like to host meetings. Snaps and the future of Ubuntu

Last week marked the release of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS <https://ubuntu.com/blog/ubuntu-22-04-lts-released>, and so far it looks like some noteworthy improvements over the last LTS, notably Wayland being enabled for Intel/AMD users by default! There is no Wayland enablement for Nvidia users in 22.04 LTS though, and Pulseaudio is still the default audio server instead of the more modern pipewire+wireplumber that's been appearing in other distributions. It also appears that Firefox in 22.04 LTS is now installed as a snap at the request of Mozilla, and it drops the deb package from the official repo. Also interesting is that Ubuntu will continue to avoid supporting flatpak in favor of snap, as explained by Mark Shuttleworth: https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2022/04/ubuntu-wont-support-flatpak-anytime-soon *>I can say right now Flatpak’s wouldn’t work for us. I don’t think they have the security story and I also don’t think they have the ability to deliver the same integrity of execution over time that Snaps have ‘cos we built those things into Snaps* >*I like the fact that people have a diversity of opinions on ways to solve the problem […] but I also think we’re going to deliver a far better experience to developers and to users if we concentrate our efforts around something we really can move forward.* I respectfully disagree with Shuttlesworth's appraisal, because it seems to contradict the overall experience I've seen from open source projects that have a tendency to package flatpaks and appimages which in turn tend to be well-supported across many distributions. While I understand that it's very easy to set up flatpak in Ubuntu <https://flatpak.org/setup/Ubuntu> these days, I'm still disappointed that this is the stance Ubuntu is taking because I feel that this doesn't quite align with the interests of the Linux community at large who're trying to improve the desktop experience. I worry that the distribution that got me into Linux years ago will increase fragmentation as time goes on if it continues to focus on its walled garden approach. What do you think? - Josh
