Hi Gerrald! There is nothing special you need do. I have a laptop running RH7.1 and am using a "cable modem" (Surf Board) in Shrewsbury. I also have a home network, but that doean't make any difference - you either configure the router or the PC to talk to the cable modem. Assuming you have DHCP (i.e., you do not have a static IP assigned), you should be able to simply configure your ethernet interface and plug it into the cable modem. There is a good chance eth0 is already setup if you installed RH onto the laptop with the nic card already installed. You can use Linuxconf to set up eth0 for dhcp and that is about it (use the masks given to you by the cable company, as well as DNS settings, etc.). Of course, you might want to consider putting a firewall between you and the rest of the world because when you plug your PC directly into a cable modem, the anyone on that system can now see you computer... WLUG, I have some stuff that is looking for a new home. If you're interested in it, I can bring it to the January WLUG meeting or arrange shipping... :) Here's what I've got: o For whoever is interested: Cabletron MRX-2 10Base-T hub This beast has 12 10Mb ports, but port 6 is bad. Gravis Ultrasound Max sound card This is a 16-bit card. I cannot find the CD for it. VESA Local Bus motherboard Includes a P90 CPU Has 2 VLB slots, 4 16-bit slots, 2 8-bit slots. RAM (I forget if this has 32MB or 64MB) Diamond Viper VLB video card VLB I/O card This should go with the motherboard, since the motherboard dates back to just before the I/O stuff was built-in. o For sale or trade: DSL Modem WESTELL ADSL modem, model # 36R515. Has power cable, Ethernet cable, and instructions. o What I am looking for: one PCMCIA ethernet network interface. 10Mb minimum, but I certainly wouldn't turn down a 10/100... :) The stuff I have is available as-is. The motherboard, video, sound card and I/O card are known-working as of March 2001. The DSL modem is something my mother bought, decided she didn't want, so she passed it to me. I can't get DSL where I live, so I thought maybe someone else could use it. I have no way of knowing if it works. If anyone is interested in this stuff, I could bring it to a WLUG meeting. PPP Dialup and Net1Plus

Thanks Guys, I had actually decided that I would try to make something like your script Ed. I just figured I should get me feet a bit wetter before I jumped in like that. I have only had Redhat or Mandrake installed for a total of a month, and I am still trying to learn about file permissions, and command-line stuff in Linux. I actually don't mind command line at all- once I am familiar with what I can do(I learned on a Digital Rainbow back in the very early '90's). I will give this a shot tonight whaen I have some time to play. PPP Dialup & Net1Plus

Hello, I have put a few different distro's on a PII 233/64, and can easily see how this can supplant whatever Microsoft OS I have on my main machine. In fact- I would like to install Mandrake or Redhat on my 1.2 gig tbird, as everything I need is there. EXCEPT 1 THING!!! I have tried to connect for the last month on a dialup account using KPPP- or whatever other config utility I could find, but ALWAYS timeout after connect. I have visited many sites that go over KPPP, and I do know what DNS #'s are, and most of the options are. I always have manually configured my accounts in Windows whatever. I dialout, I connect, I see the connect speed, but it seems when PPPD starting- it times out. I am using PAP, as I should. Does anyone here connect through dialup using Net1plus? I live in Fitchburg. Net1Plus has been NO help whatsoever. All they are allowed to do is give me DNS numbers, and POP configs- but I already know that stuff. Thanks, Chris

Hi everybody, This is a reminder about the upcoming WLUG meeting, which will be held on Thursday, December 13th, at 7:00 PM in Kinnicutt Hall at WPI in Worcester, MA. Directions can be found on the WLUG website. At this meeting, I'll bring the stuff that I wanted to do from last meeting, which I unfortunately missed due to illness. (Not bad, I've only missed one meeting in 4.5 years, and it took a probably case of pneumonia to do it!). I have a bunch of freebies from the Annual Linux Showcase to give away. I'd like to plan some activities for calendar year 2002. I'll update you on the budget. We'll talk about the seeming instabilities in the recent 2.4 kernels, and anything else you wish. There is no formal speaker for this meeting (unless somebody sends me e-mail very soon and volunteers). After the meeting, we'll go out for pizza/beer at the Boynton Restaurant. I've just requested the meeting room for 12 dates in 2002. Once I get confirmation, I'll post the 2002 meeting schedule on the website. The perl below works, I just think its real ugly and I can't stand the thought that the same thing using awk is simply: cmd | awk '{ if ($1 ~ /^[0-9]*$/) {print $2}}' >> $outlist One place I'm lost is with embedding carriage returns, which awk does so nicely. I played with arrays, stripping extra \n's after the loop, then after adding the stupid if statement below to prevent the extra blank line, I just gave up thinking I need a really good flogging. Burning MP3s onto CD

HI gang, OK, so let's say that I get one of those players that plays audio CDs or CDs with a bunch of MP3 files on them. (I don't mean converting the MP3s to audio first). My question is this: what format is used for the MP3 CD? Is it just a standard ISO9660 CD with the MP3 files and playlists(?) layed out with a particular directory scheme? Or is it something else? Andy, The Way I lay my CD's out is root Artist Album mp3's I personally use mkisofs and the loopback mount them as a sanity check. As for the format, I use ISO9660/Joliet with "allow stuff that breaks ISO" aka mkisofs -U -J -o some.iso a_subdirectory_layed_out_like_above/ It'll then bitch about this not conforming but everything works fine. Right click on windows desktop, choose settings->background, then under wallpaper select (None). That disables windows wallpaper. Maybe there's something else. I am running the server on windows, and the client on a linux machine. VNC's site has info for disabling wallpaper, but it seems to involve editing a registry file. When i try to do so, i get an access denied message, because that file is read only. Can someone help me out here? I really know very little about windows. My $.02 I personally own a Sonic blue Rio Volt and really like it. I've never heard of the iriver, but oh well. Things I really like about the Rio Volt 1. 10 hours of music per CD (with 128bit mp3's). 2. doesn't use some weirdo proprietary storage device that they'll stop manufacturing 6 months from now. 3. Can play regular CD's. This weighed heavily into getting a CD based device. I'm not going to carry an mp3 player and a CD player. Invariably, I go some where and someone's got a CD they want to listen to... 4. supports different bit depths on mp3's. My advisor got a cheaper CD based mp3 player and it just assumes that everything's 128bit. His 96bit hotel California mp3 sounds like "Alvin and the chipmunks do the eagles greatest hits" 5. has a recessed switch to disable the controls on the unit. You don't know how many sets of batteries I killed in my Sony Discman because I'd put it in my backpack and the buttons would get pressed and it would play Ride the lightning over and over. 6. The controls are good but a bit esoteric. I've got a CD with the complete works of Pink Floyd on it, organized as "albums as subdirectories" so its got ~156 songs. Until you understand the controls (or read the instructions) finding a single song is a bit mind bending. 7. It has a 40 second cache so the battery life is pretty long. Things I don't like about the Rio Volt: 1. The volume sucks on it. The ear bud headphones are just a complete waste, unless your dumbo. You'll want a pair of headphones with their own gain volume. 2. The battery cover opens easily, not really a big deal, but annoying. 3. Can't recharge batteries in the device. My old discman does this, why couldn't these guys? 4. Those stupid dancing people and that spinning CD icon (which looks a lot like the fan icon on the front of a Sun E1000 fibre array). I would have ditched the people and made the text display larger so you could put more info on it. (in the same vein I would have dumped the stupid fan icon and put "FAN BROKE" but that's just me...:) I'll bring my mp3 player with me to the next wlug meeting so anybody who wants to check it out are welcome. It is, of course, a little more expensive. Essentially, it's from the same company who OEM's the RioVolt line, but the trick is, they water down their products for the American market. There are a few things that the iRiver has that the RioVolt doesn't. 1.) LCD on the remote control. I don't know how much this interests people, but it's a nice little feature. Also, I believe those stupid dancing people that everyone so widely hated do not appear on the iRiver. 2.) I've been told by people experienced in both players that there are much more frequent firmware revisions for the iRiver. Oh, and this is a good place to mention that this is the feature that made me wanna buy it. As patches/fixes/upgrades are made for the player, you can d/l firmware upgrades, burn them to a cd, and run them in the player. One thing that really interested me is that, on the iRiver site http://www.iriver.com/english/imp250.htm they mention the potential implementation of the OGG Vorbis format, which I'm a big fan of, (no royalties threatened like MP3.) This is something I haven't seen mentioned for the American version, but who knows. One other thing I should mention. You'll need a power converter for this model. :) If anyone does end up with this player, please post your impressions on the list. I haven't completely made up my mind yet whether I want to pay more. MP3 Player recommendations

HI gang, Christmas is coming, and I'm thinking about asking Santa for a portable MP3 player. Of course, it needs to work with Linux. Judging from the looks of the CDs which I've ripped into MP3 files, 32 MB of memory looks like it might be a tad small for a single CD, while 64 MB looks like it might do the trick for loading up around 2 CDs worth of music. Is this a fair assessment? Since I use compact flash for my digital camera, any MP3 player that uses this medium should probably get extra consideration, I would think. I put together a RedHat 7.1 machine recently and was surprised to find that linuxconf was not part of the default installation. It's clearly improved over older versions of linuxconf, so why isn't it installed? Anyone know why? Thanks, Bill

Forcing scsi probe on the fly...

Does anybody know with Redhat 7.1 (using 2.4.2-2) if theirs a way to force the scsi chain to rescan its bus (without an unload/reload) of the module? so far, I haven't found something like HPUX's ioscan. Thanks, Tim.

I've had really good luck with Verizon DSL (get about 70-80k a second + no down time). In Worcester you might want to check out Speakeasy. A couple people in WLUG use them and are happy. I have Charter in Holden, and it's been excellent. I would call them though... it still takes about 10 minutes to get through, but I have only had to call them once with a problem in the past year. I agree with Tim. PPPoE is a pain, but if you have a router (Linksys Befsr41) it's essentially transparent except for maybe a few % performance. Hey, when my point of reference was a 56k modem that got a sustained throughput of 5kb a second, crappy DSL will always be better than great modem service. I agree that the PPPoE stuff is crap. Verizon got a lot of bad press (probably deserved) but for the past 8 months at least my service in Framingham has been very solid. The news servers are so slow as to be almost useless and there's a funny restriction about what domain must be used to send e-mail, but neither of those really affect me.
