Well, when i run xf86config, and select the card it tells me that it is unsupported. I don't have any of those cards in use except in machines that are console-only, so I haven't tried it. If all else fails, you can always use the framebuffer X server with 4.x. Brian J. FS: Webramp 200i with 2nd modem

Cleaning house again... I've got a Webramp 200i with an internal modem and a second BOCA 56k modem (modems can be independently operated or bonded together if your ISP allows it) that I used before I got cable internet. Was working when it was taken out of service. Allows modem sharing with its internal 4 port hub. No docs or CD with it but easily found on the Web at: http://www.rampnet.com/rampnet/support/200i/index.html eBay is getting about $60 for them now. WLUG special!... First email committment for $30 and payment and pick up at my home in Worcester gets it. Some people learn things in different ways. If reading HOWTOS was the best way to do something, why do we have WLUG meetings? I wouldn't see these as being comprehensive overviews of whatever we're trying to teach, but more like a WLUG presentation where we show the beginnings of one "cool" thing. I think this would be great for people who have heard of linux, but never tried it out before... The real newbies, the people who don't want to wade through pages and pages of documentation just to get an idea of what they need to do. Take the first video that was suggested, "What is linux and why it's good" I think a 15 minute video can show linux off more than reading about it for hours. Another person had suggested advocacy style videos, I would assume this would be "built in" to any video we made. If we make one on how to set up a small business server (mail, file sharing, dhcp, dns), then we would also mention why it's better than other solutions. Hell, maybe that video could even be used by employees to help sell management (who doesn't want to read through *any* technical documentation) on the linux idea. And yes, this is a lot of work. I wouldn't expect us to do more than one video a month. Lets take 60 for n ... 15 minute video equals 15 man-hours of work. 5 people working on it means they'll have to spend a full work day a month (I'm assuming video production is like programming where you don't scale linearly by throwing more people at it). GPL Videos ...

Last night after going to the B several of us ended up in the parking lot chatting about a variety of things including classic video game emulation, microsoft bashing, and creating a WLUG series of videos. Last night, it seemed like a great idea to make some kind of linux based show and distribute those videos for free (over the internet, possible on VCD as well). There were several ideas, including a social commentary (ala "geeks in space" http://www.thesync.com/geeks/) a tech-help show answering emails (http://www.techtv.com/callforhelp/) and instructional videos (just think of that comercial for the windows videos... "Just like a VCR, pop the cd into the computer, hit play, and learn"). Personally, I like the last idea best since it really can provide value for the community (as opposed to providing entertainment). We had also thought that a shorter 15-minute style video would be a great way to start. Personally, I'm in favor of "What is linux, and why is it good for you". Hi all, I just recompiled my kernel to add in acpi support for my laptop. When acpid tries to start, it tells me that it can't find /proc/acpi/event I know I've got it installed, how do I set up those files? I know better then to go mucking around in /proc w/o help! BTW, if there is anyone willing to help me convert my iPAQ to linux, I'll get the files together and be happy to meet you someone. LaLa Java on Route 9 in Shrewsbury is a great place for stuff like this (and they have some great tee-shirts). If anyone can help me with both these things, I'd greatly appreciate it. Wes --

I've long had vague memories that I was present at the creation of the emoticon, but did not remember the details and had no proof---until now. Slashdot has a story about the first smiley, which links to a site that has a copy of a bulletin board thread from 1982. My contribution was the suggestion that the character should be chosen to look like something. It doesn't appear in the quoted part of the thread, but I remember advocating that the parenthesis should appear in balanced pairs, to form "joke brackets" which mark the beginning and end of the joke. This suggestion never caught on, which is a bit surprising because Scott Fahlman is a Lisp guy. Converting an iPAQ

For the last few months I've been hoping to save up some money and get a Zaurus, I don't think that it's going to happen any time soon. So, I've got an iPAQ that I can't sync, or even connect, with my linux laptop and it's beginning to get on my nerves. So, even though I've got some software on my iPAQ that I'll miss (a Bible Reader with the Greek Text and SimCity 2000), I'm thinking that it's time to take the plunge and get Linux and Qtopia on my 3835. Three Questions, 1. Has anyone on the list done this, especially with this model? 2. Has anyone who has done this used any of theKompany's embedded apps? 3. Is there anyone willing to help me do this face to face? I could do this on my own, but the idea of potentially owning a $599 paperweight dims my enthusiasm when I think of going it alone. (I'll buy the coffee) I've got a serial adapter, so that's not a problem. So, what do you say, anyone out there willing to teach me something new? Wes --

Free to a good home

I've got a 20" Sun branded Trinitron monitor (GDM-20D10) that is yours if you just come fetch it from me in Worcester. Why is it free? Because the cable that's pigtailed on is busted and it doesn't do red very well anymore. The connector on the end of the cable is at 13W3. It should be fixable by just opening the thing up and replacing the cable. Any takers? Scott

Hey Guys, I'd like to collect some stats on a few servers over time. Things like bandwidth usage, load averages, used/free memory, disk I/O. Does anyone have any favorite tools to do this easily. Also... Anything that makes pretty graphs to show management would be bonus points. Thanks, -Marc

overlay/watermark???

I'm generating a document with good old latex, and I'd like to be able to add a figure as the background to each page, something like a watermark, or the background capability of html. I'd be happy to use a post-processing step to do this. I've been looking at the ps utilities, but there's nothing that looks like it will work. Any ideas? TIA, Bill
