loading modules

I have a situation where I need to use a non-standard kernel module in place of one that comes with the RedHat 8.0 distribution, and I'd like to know the "right" way to achieve this. The module is a device driver for a Qlogic fibre host bus adapter. The reason for the special module is that the one that RedHat supplies does not handle all the fibre configurations we (EMC) need for an EMC/Clariion array. Here's what I've done thus far. 1. I have written an rpm to build the module from source and install it. I have given the module a unique name so it won't conflict with the kernel rpm file. 2. Once installed, I can run depmod, rmmod (on the old module) and modprobe (on the new module). (If I reboot, I don't need to run depmod.) Everything looks fine at this point, and I know I could put the appropriate commands (rmmod & modprobe) into /etc/rc.d/rc.local, but I'm wondering if there is something cleaner. One thing I tried (with no success) was to modify /etc/modules.conf **************** Old: alias scsi_hostadapter1 qla2200 New: alias scsi_hostadapter1 newmodule **************** I thought that this was the line that was making the standard module (qla2200) load. I found that qla2200 loaded even after my change, and the newmodule did not load. Suggestions? TIA, Bill

Hi All, I was wondering if there is a way to create a window that would be a tunnel into another X server. For example if i'm running a server on :0 and on :1, i would like to have a window, which is connected to :0, that would show what is being displayed on :1. This is similar to how vmware works. When you start vmware in window on :0 it will actually start another X server on :1 and display (in a window) the contents on :1. Is this possible (other then with vmware)? Thanks, --brad

First, thanks to those who sent suggestions on how to solve my samba configuration problems. My Win98 box is happily using file and print shares from my linux box. (Too bad SANE does not have drivers for the scanner cartridge on my Canon printer. <sigh>) A new question. I tried getting the equalizer on xmms to control the output while playing audio CD's (not MP3's). The volume control on the main window works, and the playlist window works, but the equalizer doesn't. What's the trick? TIA, Bill

Is there any way of getting the email addresses in our mailing list archive removed? I've been getting a bunch of spam lately to hughesm(a)tomsnyder.com ... I just figured out that it was coming from a web spider (the damned fools attached their mailing list to the spam, and it said where it was from!) and the only place I can find that address posted is on the WLUG pages. As a former Tech Support Slave, tinkering with the registry of any Microsoft product is akin to hand editing your compressed kernel image... I'm not saying you can't do it, I just wouldn't.. Plus, any encryption (even microsoft) encryption is better than no encryption any day... Talking to BBC World ClickOnline at his home in Silicon Valley, the inventor of the Linux operating system admitted that he has never been in the same room with his arch-rival. "We have been at the same conferences but never in the same room. I wouldn't know what to say to him," he told ClickOnline. Mr Torvalds enjoys the notoriety he has achieved as the man that challenged the Microsoft empire with his open source alternative operating system. *Rising to the challenge "In a way it is fun. I'm pleased to be a poster boy. It gives me some self-importance," he said. He would not, however, want to become personally involved in the dispute with Microsoft. "I've tried to stay out of the Microsoft debate. If you start doing things because you hate others and want to screw them over the end result is bad," he said. The main reason he developed Linux in the first place had as much to do with wanting a challenge as being fed up with an operating system that would not do what he wanted it to. Like most technology projects it ran way over the time allotted to it and, to this day, is not truly finished. "It was a lot harder than I expected. I thought, like most of my projects, it would talk half a year and then I'd lose interest," he said. To the relief of his legion of followers he did persevere and eleven years on is still working on it. Reluctance to change While Linux is gradually gaining ground on Microsoft it might well not be suitable for everyone, Mr Torvalds admitted. "Most people don't want to change. They may hate Windows but they run it despite that because, quite frankly, they don't care about computers," he said. And even those that do care, often install Linux without much idea of what they want it to do, he said. This happens almost everytime I go to a webpage to unsubscribe from some of the junk mail I get. I have tried looking for a Download Plugin Download at both Mozilla and Netscape, but have come up empty handed. Anyone know of such a thing? Thanks! Steve

Earlier this week I installed a minimalist configuration of RH 8.0 on my old Thinkpad 365XD (P133/40MB/6GB). The configuration works fine except for being slow due to lack of processor and memory (40 MB RAM is max'd). The only snag I ran into was a hang on install just before the first RPM installs. The machine locked up there twice during the text install. I found this lockup only happened to me doing a "custom" install and not the "workstation" install. RH 8.0 does seem improved over RH 7.X in terms of the quality of fonts and GUI mods. I also found more things I could quickly disable features to make life bearable on this old hardware (wallpaper,menu icons,etc). Unfortunately, I have not tried other distributions yet and cannot intelligently compare them to RH 7.X or 8.0. My next step is to find a very small window manager to hopefully make this machine perform reasonably in X. Currently I am considering replacing the default Gnome with either IceWM and Enlightenment. I'm looking at some software I have to build at work, and I'm trying to work with RedHat 8.0, even though I don't have it yet. I'm curious about a particulare "binary" package: kernel-source-2.4.18-14.i386.rpm and similarly: glibc-kernheaders-2.4-7.20.i386.rpm These are clearly source files. How do they compare with: kernel-2.4.18-14.src.rpm ???? In particular, I'd like to try building my package (targeting 8.0) on my 7.2 box. (Maybe that's unrealistic. It's a fibre HBA driver module.) At any rate, why the mixup with the "sources"? And, why would header files be non-relocatable on the install? (At least the kernel headers are with 7.2. TIA, Bill

You should be able to specify with options in the conf.modules or modules.conf when the module loads which IRQ to use. I'm sorry I didn't follow this thread from the start, but I can explain how we have Samba setup at our client site: We are running Samba 2.2.2 on the server side (Solaris 2.6 or 2.7) with mostly Windows 2000 clients connecting on the client side. When I want to map my home directory from my Windows 2000 client, I use Map Network Drive and supply the following information: Drive: <some letter> Folder: \\clemens\simoncim When I hit finish, it maps my Unix home directory without any problems.

samba shares & win98 usernames

I want to set up some samba shares to be mounted on my win98 box, and I'd like to protect the shares with usernames and passwords, but I can't remember how to specify a username from the win98 box. I seem to remember a way by adding the username to the share spec, but I can't find any documentation on the subject. Any ideas? Or should I use a different approach? (I have 3 kids & a wife who are mainly windows users, but will sometimes use my linux box. I'd like them to be able to read/write their files from either machine.) TIA, Bill

Hi all, I got mandrake 9.0 on my laptop (now XP-less, smile) and I love it. However, I've got two problems.... 1. My usb devices are not accepting addresses, I've got a dmesg log in a file if you want to see it. 2. I can't get tpconfig to work! Does anyone know if the patch was pre-installed for tpconfig in previous mdk's? I used to be able to install the rpm and it just worked, now it doesn't work at all (and I hate "tapping").
