I've followed the instructions for setting up postfix to use both /etc/mail/aliases and /usr/local/mailman/data/aliases for alias maps. I've configured mailman so it know it's using postfix for the MTA. I've created the mailman list and another list to test. However when I try and send mail to the list, I get the following error: Mar 3 14:35:55 carnation postfix/local[6154]: C39852E25C: to=<officers(a)tkezm.org>, relay=local, delay=0, status=bounced (unknown user: "officers") Now I know that receiving and sending mail works on this box because I've tested it for local users. Any help would be much appreciated since I'm at my wits end and I can't find anything else on the subject. Pete, Consider ClarkConnect Home Edition V2.1. It is a RH based (V8 I think) server that inlcudes most of the functionallity you list. Very simple install. Easy modifications once running via a web browser. Updates are simple and free over the web from ClarkConnect. A few quick notes: 1) Clark includes the option of a multi-homed ethernet firewall also, which I never install. How can one box be both securing your network and a server for everything and the kitchen sink? It is best to keep the firewall separate. 2) They offer service packages also if support is needed. As far as distros go, I use gentoo (www.gentoo.org) I switched when redhat8.0 wouldn't load on a server of mine. The forums on their website are amazing, and I haven't even had a problem that somebody couldn't fix. My suggestion is gentoo. I'm still a bit of a novice myself when it comes to Apache and Samba, so I'm prob not the guy for the job. If you had a bit of time maybe, but I'm still learning. What ver of windows are your running on your laptop? And just so you know, default installs of windows are horribly insecure. There's prob an account with a blank password somewhere, or you could be running 9x and they didn't even care about security then. Yeah, your http port will prob be getting hit daily with people trying to pull funny stuff, worms trying to hurt you, etc.. Sorry I can't be of anymore help...a decent samba referece is on O'Reilly's openbooks site, www.oreilly.com/opnebook; Using Samba, 2ed. Repartitioning for Installfest

As I mentioned in an earlier email, the Worcester Area Association for Computing Machinery will be having a Linux Installfest on March 27th. We are working under the assumption that many of the people that will attend will want to keep their Windows installations as well. Therefore, we need a nondestructive repartitioning software package. It would also be nice if we could make an image of their hard drive before we do anything so we can ensure the integrity of the data if something were to go wrong. Unfortunately, the IT departments does not have copies of Partition Magic or Ghost that we could use for the event. Does anybody have an appropriately licensed copy of the software that we could use , or know of Open Source / Freeware alternatives that are as reliable as their commercial counterparts? Does someone's place of work have such software that they would be willing for the ACM to use for the event? Is anybody aware of Open Source / Freeware alternatives that are just as reliable as these software packages (these systems will probably be using NTFS, which is much more fickle than FAT32 when it comes to these things) Any assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated, and the ACM welcomes the WLUG to the Installfest on the 27th. Is 3000 joules "better" than 2000 joules? Is there a "minimum" joule rating that is considered good enough for most common environments? ACM Installfest

The Worcester Area Student Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery will be hosting an Installfest on March 27th from 6-9PM. It will be on WPI Campus in Higgins Lab 116. Veterans and newbies to Linux are welcome! If you are an experienced user, we will start setting up at 5PM, and you are welcome to show up then. We will be advertising heavily around campus, so hopefully we can attract some new users! I just saw this on one of the other lists I'm on and I'm testing it out and it seems to work. http://shfs.sourceforge.net/ It lets you mount a remote filesystem over an SSH link. ala mount -t shfs root@someserver /mnt/localmntpnt Very cool. Tim.

Hi. I bought a Ximeta Netdisk (http://ximeta.com/products/netdisk.html) which is an external HDD with both USB and network connectivity. The company explicitly states that the device works with Red Hat 8 and 9, but I've had no luck with it. The drivers are available only as RPMs, no source provided. It's network attached, but it doesn't use a standard protocol. The RPM is supposed to install two modules, nd.o and lpx.o, but they don't show up with lsmod. When I try to load them with insmod or modprobe, I get a bunch of error messages about "unresolved symbols". I though it may have been a dependency problem, so I recompiled to load network block device (nbd.o), but that had no effect. I've tried both RH 8 and 9 fresh stock installs with the same results. Ximeta has stated that they will provide me a new driver, but I'm not holding my breath. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Setiathome is a good distributed program http://www.setiathome.com as well as gimps (can't remember the url). Seti is the Search for ExtraTerrestrial Life(be verry verry quiet, I'm hunting for aliens, huhuhuh). I have two machines using Gentoo that also have distcc servers running on them. I also have a couple other friends that also use gentoo and would like to use a larger distcc network. Hello, all. My name's Carlton and I figured this is probally the best place to post this note. My friends and I have recently got distcc working (a distributed compiler using gcc-3.3.2). We've currently got 7 (maybe 8?) computers running the distcc daemon right now. Basically, when any one of us compiles something the processess are distributed amongst the computers on the network running distcc. So, my question is, is anyone interested in joining our little group? I figure the more linboxes the merrier. We are also in the process of setting up a couple of G5's with cross compiling on distcc so any Mac guys out there are welcome to (but Linux/BSD guys are most welcome ^_^). Feel free to reply, sageman(a)wpi.edu, if you are interested. We are also looking at getting some other stuff distributed if at all possible but really haven't started looking anywhere yet. how to setup wireless network for WPI campus

hi, everyone. I am trying to config my linux laptop so I can use wireless connection on campus. However, it is not easy. I modified some script file and added the SSID and WEP info into it. However, it still didn't work. Anyone have some idea or experience about this? thanks

Building your own up2date server...

I know that at one of the meetings, it was mentioned that WPI has their own up2date server. Could one of the WPI techs give a quick explanation on how they did this? As the number of linux boxes I manage grows, this is something I'd like to deploy into my infrastructure. Thanks, Tim.

My suggestion is use a gentoo live cd (go with x86 no stages). There is also another option. If you have another computer you can burn a copy of knopix. Once you create the cd, you insert it into the CDROM drive, boot from CDROM to a nice KDE GUI and all partitions are automatically mounted. Click on the partition that has the needed info and you are good to go. It may sound complicated but Knopix has a really fine User Interface. (If you don't have a CDROM you can do the same thing with Tomsrbtb from a floppy) Then when you want to create a boot disk you can open a command window, mount the root partition and then do "chroot /mnt/rootPartition". From there you can run lilo or mkbootdisk. Good luck.
