If the compile screens, then DistCC is working, it just doesn't display it. Try setting the log file and reviewing it after a compile 2) I can't get the monitor to see anything either, thats why i stick with the log. Whoa, didn't mean to start a mini flame war! I think the portage system does wonders with the dependencies, and as I understand it portage is very BSD-like (I don't have any experience with BSD yet) with their package system. OK, one box boots up in 24 seconds (from GRUB menu to XDM login), and the other in 16 seconds (GRUB to CLI login). Now, thats a lot faster than default Red Hat installs, which can take minutes on a similarly capable machine. A good part of the faster bootup is that my Gentoo installation is, at least for now, much leaner than Red Hat and doesn't have to load as many daemons. But major distros like Red Hat, for compatibility sake, compile their code (or at least used to) as i386 for compatibility. Some have moved to i586. But my gentoo box is specifically compiled for the P4 with O3 compile flag. So that does speed things up a bit. Also, I run seti@home 24/7 on my personal boxes, so I never have any idle CPU percentages. On Red Hat seti@home would slow me down when I was really working the computer's resources. Haven't seen that happen yet in Gentoo. So, maybe its not the compiles that make it faster. But the capability to customize it, its inherent leanness (do I really want to install this if it takes 4 hours to compile)?, and its package system make it my linux distro of choice. It appears that at least a couple people here are using Gentoo. I am working on building a DistCC (Distributed C Compiling) network so that our "emerge -u world" and Stage 1 installations go by that much quicker. It has substantially improved my installation time - my first Stage 1 install, which did not use Distcc took nearly 3 days (some downtime was incurred since I had to sleep and go to class). With only 2 Pentium 4's and 1 Pentium 3, I was able to cut that time down to about 24 hours - the installation was on my 1.6Ghz Celeron, so you know that most of the compiling capabilities wasn't done on that! If you would like to use the Distcc network I'm putting together to get your Gentoo box running or to make emerge -u world that much quicker, all I ask is that you please run the Distcc server on your machine as well. For me honestly, it has to do with the fact that I got sick and tired of RedHat. I got tired of *rpm -qa | grep (some dependancy)* Do I feel like it sped things up from redhat, yeah! Do I like the fact that I've learned a ton about linux, not RedHat, yeah. (Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing RH, its just that *I* used RPMS as way too much of a crutch.) I like that I had evolution w/o ldap support, said "oh, I must have forgotten that flag", fixed the flag, and recompilied. Portage dl'd ldap for me, I didn't have to worry about deps...that's where gentoo really takes it for me. I've just read reports of using 3 days of CPU time to intall a gentoo system. My wimpy k6 system has over 98% idle cpu cycles - that's running i386 compiled debian code and a not totally trivial workload, it's a firewall, mail/web/dns server, and has a fair number of interactive users (15 as I write this, but it's still early in the day). My computer spends almost all of its time waiting for me. Any time that it doesn't spend waiting for me is spent waiting for I/O devices like disks and the network. If you want your computer to be faster, get yourself gobs of ram and run out of a ram disk. The cpu time is rarely the bottle. 3 days to save something that I'm only using 3% of... Setting up postfix and mailman

I've followed the instructions for setting up postfix to use both /etc/mail/aliases and /usr/local/mailman/data/aliases for alias maps. I've configured mailman so it know it's using postfix for the MTA. I've created the mailman list and another list to test. Pete, Consider ClarkConnect Home Edition V2.1. It is a RH based (V8 I think) server that inlcudes most of the functionallity you list. Very simple install. Easy modifications once running via a web browser. Updates are simple and free over the web from ClarkConnect. A few quick notes: 1) Clark includes the option of a multi-homed ethernet firewall also, which I never install. How can one box be both securing your network and a server for everything and the kitchen sink? It is best to keep the firewall separate. 2) They offer service packages also if support is needed. As far as distros go, I use gentoo (www.gentoo.org) I switched when redhat8.0 wouldn't load on a server of mine. The forums on their website are amazing, and I haven't even had a problem that somebody couldn't fix. My suggestion is gentoo. I'm still a bit of a novice myself when it comes to Apache and Samba, so I'm prob not the guy for the job. If you had a bit of time maybe, but I'm still learning. What ver of windows are your running on your laptop? And just so you know, default installs of windows are horribly insecure. There's prob an account with a blank password somewhere, or you could be running 9x and they didn't even care about security then. Yeah, your http port will prob be getting hit daily with people trying to pull funny stuff, worms trying to hurt you, etc.. Sorry I can't be of anymore help...a decent samba referece is on O'Reilly's openbooks site, www.oreilly.com/opnebook; Using Samba, 2ed. Hi all, This is not Linux specific, but there must some EE types that can answer my question. What's the REAL meaning of the Juole rating on surge protectors? ACM Installfest

The Worcester Area Student Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery will be hosting an Installfest on March 27th from 6-9PM. It will be on WPI Campus in Higgins Lab 116. Veterans and newbies to Linux are welcome! If you are an experienced user, we will start setting up at 5PM, and you are welcome to show up then. We will be advertising heavily around campus, so hopefully we can attract some new users! We will be distributing and installing Mandrake, Debian, Knoppix, and Gentoo, although more distributions are certainly welcome. Hi everybody, This is a reminder about the upcoming WLUG meeting, to be held at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, February 25, 2004 at the usual place (the Access Grid room, WPI campus, Worcester, MA USA). Detailed directions can be found on the WLUG webpage. At this meeting, our featured speaker is J.D. "Illiad" Frazer, the author of the comic strip UserFriendly. You can read the comic strip at http:// www.userfriendly.org. There are more details, such as biographical information, and an explanation of the comic strip's characters, linked from the WLUG home page. This meeting will be broadcast onto the Access Grid. For those who don't know, the Access Grid can be considered to be video conferencing on steroids. Read more about it at this site: http://www.accessgrid.org. There are only a few such sites in all of New England, but there are almost 200 sites worldwide: Boston University Worcester Polytechnic Institute Dartmouth Univ. of Maine - Orono I am going to try to get to Softpro and see if I can pick up a couple of UserFriendly books for the raffle. As usual, light refreshments will be served. After the meeting, we'll adjourn to some local restaurant. I'm not sure, but I think the Boynton Restaurant is still undergoing major renovations and is thus closed. In that event, we can probably go to the mexican place (Tortilla Sams, I think its called). Hi all A friend sent me the following. Thought you guys might enjoy it. I was having trouble with my computer. So I called the computer guy, to come over. He clicked a couple of buttons and solved the problem and gave me a bill for a minimum service call. As he was walking away, I called after him, "So, what was wrong?" He replied, "It was an `ID ten T' error." I didn't want to appear stupid, but nonetheless inquired: "An, ID ten T error? What's that .... In case I need to fix it again?" I just saw this on one of the other lists I'm on and I'm testing it out and it seems to work. http://shfs.sourceforge.net/ It lets you mount a remote filesystem over an SSH link. ala mount -t shfs root@someserver /mnt/localmntpnt Very cool. Tim.

Hi. I bought a Ximeta Netdisk (http://ximeta.com/products/netdisk.html) which is an external HDD with both USB and network connectivity. The company explicitly states that the device works with Red Hat 8 and 9, but I've had no luck with it. The drivers are available only as RPMs, no source provided. It's network attached, but it doesn't use a standard protocol. The RPM is supposed to install two modules, nd.o and lpx.o, but they don't show up with lsmod. When I try to load them with insmod or modprobe, I get a bunch of error messages about "unresolved symbols". I though it may have been a dependency problem, so I recompiled to load network block device (nbd.o), but that had no effect. I've tried both RH 8 and 9 fresh stock installs with the same results. Ximeta has stated that they will provide me a new driver, but I'm not holding my breath. Any suggestions? Thanks.
