sound module?

I got a new (old) machine, and I'm having problems getting the sound card working. The machine is a DELL Optiplex GX1, and the sound card is built into the mother board. I can't see anything on the motherboard that tells me what kind of sound card is there. I can't even find anything about the motherboard other than it's Dell. There are messages in my system log: Dec 15 22:21:31 newguy modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-slot-0 Dec 15 22:21:31 newguy modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-service-0-0 I get these messages at boot and whenever I put a music CD in the drive. Any ideas? TIA, Bill

help: printing to MS98 server

I thought I had success (well, I had some) setting up printing to my W98 printer. What I find is that I can print a postscript file to the printer just fine -- at least the first page. But, I can't get more than the first page to go. Here's my commands. The first is for a postscript file, and the second uses nenscript so that I can print a text file. cat mail.ps | gs -dNOPAUSE -q -sDEVICE=bjc600 -sOutputFile=- - | smbclient //bertha/CANON -c 'print -' nenscript -B -p - < mail.txt | gs -dNOPAUSE -q -sDEVICE=bjc600 -sOutputFile=- - | smbclient //bertha/CANON -c 'print -' I think I'm doing something wrong with the gs command, but I don't see what. Hi Gerrald, I don't know the answer directly, as I don't run RedHat on my systems at home. I'm forwarding this to the WLUG mailing list, as somebody there probably knows the answer. WLUG: Any thoughts on how to configure a laptop running RedHat 7.1 for access to the Charter Pipeline cable modem? Is there anything special with Charter Pipeline vs. any other cable modem? Hi Gerrald! There is nothing special you need do. I have a laptop running RH7.1 and am using a "cable modem" (Surf Board) in Shrewsbury. I also have a home network, but that doean't make any difference - you either configure the router or the PC to talk to the cable modem. Assuming you have DHCP (i.e., you do not have a static IP assigned), you should be able to simply configure your ethernet interface and plug it into the cable modem. There is a good chance eth0 is already setup if you installed RH onto the laptop with the nic card already installed. You can use Linuxconf to set up eth0 for dhcp and that is about it (use the masks given to you by the cable company, as well as DNS settings, etc.). Of course, you might want to consider putting a firewall between you and the rest of the world because when you plug your PC directly into a cable modem, the anyone on that system can now see you computer... WLUG, I have some stuff that is looking for a new home. If you're interested in it, I can bring it to the January WLUG meeting or arrange shipping... :) Here's what I've got: o For whoever is interested: Cabletron MRX-2 10Base-T hub This beast has 12 10Mb ports, but port 6 is bad. Gravis Ultrasound Max sound card This is a 16-bit card. I cannot find the CD for it. VESA Local Bus motherboard Includes a P90 CPU Has 2 VLB slots, 4 16-bit slots, 2 8-bit slots. RAM (I forget if this has 32MB or 64MB) Diamond Viper VLB video card VLB I/O card This should go with the motherboard, since the motherboard dates back to just before the I/O stuff was built-in. o For sale or trade: DSL Modem WESTELL ADSL modem, model # 36R515. Has power cable, Ethernet cable, and instructions. o What I am looking for: one PCMCIA ethernet network interface. 10Mb minimum, but I certainly wouldn't turn down a 10/100... :) The stuff I have is available as-is. The motherboard, video, sound card and I/O card are known-working as of March 2001. The DSL modem is something my mother bought, decided she didn't want, so she passed it to me. I can't get DSL where I live, so I thought maybe someone else could use it. I have no way of knowing if it works. If anyone is interested in this stuff, I could bring it to a WLUG meeting.
