At my church we have used 8x8 for VOIP service with some cisco VOIP phones, without problems. Though the cost got too much for us over time. For a business, maybe the first step would be to move to an external VOIP provider like 8x8 before you try to selfhost. If you have a comcast business service, with static IPs, then I'm going to assume you would be all set to host your own PBX. But for four lines... running asterix might be more than you want to do. Though I'm sure there are some vendors out there who will provide on-premise asterix solutions. The tricky part, I think, is getting your numbers ported over, especially if you're doing it yourself. Again, I'd do with a hosted solution, then play with asterix using a fifth number as a self hosted solution. John

asterisk or other linux pbx

Hi All, I’m considering a move from a traditional (and proprietary) PBX to something open-source that i can manage. I know very little about this, so i’m trying to understand if my goal is even possible. Given that our provider (i.e. gatekeeper) is Comcast, i worry they prevent running self-hosted VOIP boxes. Currently the office has 4 lines supplied by comcast. The comcast cable modem has 4 telephone lines going into a Panasonic PBX, which they dispatch the calls to the POTS phones. I want to replace the Panasonic PBX since its proprietary and requires a call into the phone company to change anything. I have very little knowledge in this area, so i’m wondering if anyone here has had experience in this area. Thanks! - brad

Hey Gang, We've got a meeting tonight at 7PM! It's still virtual because you know, the pandemic. Hopefully in the future we'll be able to stand 6' apart from each other and hang out! But until then, there's Jitsi! We'll be meeting here: https://meet.jit.si/WlugMA at 7PM! We'll likely jibber jab until it's late.. My neighbors house may or may not catch on fire again! I'm going to show off Min.IO running in a docker container. I can show the web interface and then we'll stick some objects in the container. I know that several other WLUG members are also using it in production so it'll be interesting to get their take on it as well. Then I suspect we'll end up talking about all things nerdy! See you! It's not that big of a deal as there is a touch screen on the front that'll tell me what the ink levels are. Doug, Granted, not an laserjet printer, but for what it's worth I've got the $179 HP Envy 7155 All-in-one inkjet printer. Networking is wireless only. Both printing and scanning just work on Ubuntu. From Linux I can't see the ink levels, that's my only annoyance. We buy the XL print cartridges which seem to last a long time.. Thanks, Tim. Gotta buy something uncursed, and the curse may vary per user so I feel positive on my hopes when I choose/toss-dart/intuit the right new....still sleeping on it..... hp or ? lightweight ( sits near my knees, barely fits ). But how do we know the Linux driver? printers.conf and output of lpinfo -v seem cryptic if they do show a driver (.ppd?) Here's a possibly useful source of recommendations. And laser, even color laser, is getting much cheaper these days. Consumables are the gotchas of course... https://haydenjames.io/finding-linux-compatible-printers/ I still think the Brother MFC are good. And network scanning works for me too using SANE and gscan2pdf. Really handy. My next printer will be a brother, but this one refuses to die...

I've also had good luck with HP and Fujitsu Snascan scanners via USB, but not over the network. Scanning over the network is something I haven't figured out since I scan so infrequently and I just go plug the laptop into the scanner via USB. It's the older BR2 postscript engine, and the SANE drivers aren't supported on new linux distros because they use a library that's not available any more. I should be able to fix it with some LD_* trickery, but instead I just SSH into an older box with the library and run the GUI over X. recommended printer/3-in-1 laser B+W for general (Linux and Windows clients)

Hi! Hope this doesnt start a HUGE preference debate, but I'm taking feedback on what some of you already know to be a "solid" not too big laser black+white, flatbed/top scanner+copier (no top sheet feeder please, adds too much space/width) BUT THE PAIN is always in the PRINTER drivers/software, win or linux, in my experience. Check out the https://zesty.tech They make an system that essentially gets you the benefits of direct drive and bowden by remotely driving a feeder with an ultra stiff cable so you don't need to have the stepper on the print head. The website is printermods.com The only thing they bring to the table is they've just assembled the parts, but still cool nome the less. This reminds me of the R/C model airplanes of my youth. They were not "proportional". They had a single channel that controlled the rudder. As you pulsed the transmitter the plane's rudder went from "center" to "full right" to "center" to "full left" to "center". As they got more sophisticated the rudder went in half-steps, but basically the same cycle. As long as the (gas) engine was running they gracefully climbed, and once the engine ran out of fuel then (hopefully) gracefully glided down. Sometimes it was not so graceful. Many times they ended up in trees. The receiver used a tube and a very heavy battery. The planes typically had a five or six foot wingspan, the fuselage was close to six feet long. The transmitter power leads clipped to your car battery. They would fly from five to ten minutes, limited mostly by the gas tank size and battery life of the receiver. There were a couple of guys who built these (the rest of the hobbyists, my brother included) flew control-line planes..... I never built one (I could not afford it), and so I more or less ignored R/C until thirty years later. All of a sudden there were IC based proportional R/C radios with more channels than a Sony TV that (seemingly) were about the size of a dime and could control these cute cars, boats, airplanes, heliocopters, all for less than 25 bucks. Great meeting last night... but we need topics...

However, it's clear that even doing the virtual meetings, we need to have a topic.. we simply ran out of stuff to talk about...
