It has several options for formatting directory listings. An alternative would be to add an "index.pl" to the directory, and write that perl script to format your directory listing the way you want it. Bill

Recommened QUIET cdrw/dvd drives?

by John Stoffel

Hi all, Does anyone has a recommendatio on a nice quiet CD-R/CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive? I see that newegg.com has a Lite-On and a Sony for sale today, both under $50 which seems like a steal. Sounds like a good thing since my SCSI CDRW drive is finally biting the bullet and acting flaky. One requirement is that the drive is quiet. I hate those CDROM drives which sound like jet engines on startup and then just click and whir and sound really loud all the time when running. I especially hate it when they spin up and down constantly. I'd rather have it just spin all the time if possible, or at least not spin down quite so quickly. The two I'm looking at are: Lite On 48x24x48x16 Combo Drive, Model LTC48161H, Retail Sony 48x24x48x16 Combo Drive, Model CRX300E/A, OEM I'm leaning towards the Lite-On one, since it comes with Burner software which my Wife can use (I plan on getting two of these BTW) while I'm happy with Linux in the basement. :] John

Of course, there is the good-old standby, sendmail, which comes practically preconfigured for this kind of use on Red Hat, just edit: /etc/mail/sendmail.mc Remove the "dnl" comment characters from the beginning of this line, and set it to your smart relay host: define(`SMART_HOST',`smtp.myprovider.com') Make sure you have the sendmail-cf package installed, then restart sendmail: service sendmail restart The .cf files will be rebuilt automagically. Oh, one more thing, make sure DAEMON=yes in /etc/sysconfig/sendmail, or this will fail to work (this is a change from earlier RH releases, where it might have been a good idea to set DAEMON=no). This will run the daemon ONLY as a local server (on 127.0.0.1) for the sole purpose of submissions by MUAs.

It is designed to be simple to configure, secure, and easily extendable. ssmtp: A secure, effective and simple way of getting mail off a system to your mail hub. It contains no suid-binaries or other dangerous things - no mail spool to poke around in, and no daemons running in the background. Mail is simply forwarded to the configured mailhost. Extremely easy configuration. -- Josh Huber

Sound card troubleshooting

by Michael Long

Hi, I have been running Suse 8.2 and Sound Blaster sblive! EMU10k1 with no trouble until the last online update from suse. Now I get the message "Cannot open the audio device. Another application may be using it." And yet when using suse's configuration tool, YAST, the card appears to be configured correctly. The only weird thing I can find is that when I go to the hardware info page I see the following 2 entries: Unique key:_+Pw.mTanvDDnb_0 old_unique_key: airf.mTanvDDnb_0 Where should I start looking to figure out what got broken. Thanks, Mike

Sigh... it turned out that my co-lo site was blocking port 5999 (cvsup) on me, due to their ISP complaing about problems earlier. They forgot, and since I hadn't done an update in a while, I didn't notice either. All it well now, and I've changed to useing the MIT mirror, it's pretty darn fast. John

It times out when I try cvsup14.freebsd.org. Perhaps leave it at cvsup.freebsd.org and be patient? I just tried that one (cvsup.freebsd.org) now and it connected up and starting syncing without issue. I haven't checked any of the mailing list archives recently, perhaps there's a known issue with cvsup mirrors being busy or a lack of available mirrors. -b > Brian> I cvsup ports at 3 in the morning and had no issues today. FreeBSD - cvsup access down?

by John Stoffel

Hi All, Is anyone else running FreeBSD and having problems talking to any/all of the various CVSup servers around the world? I can't decide if the ISP which hosts the site where I have a co-lo is causing the problem, or if I've just done something stupid with my system setup. Basically, any connections for port 5999 on most of the CVSup servers I've tried talking to just times out. For example: # cvsup ports-supfile Cannot connect to cvsup14.FreeBSD.org: Connection refused Will retry at 14:29:15 Retrying Cannot connect to cvsup14.FreeBSD.org: Connection refused Will retry at 14:40:01 Thanks, John

Mo, you can make an initrd for any installed kernel without booting to it. mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.4.20-28.9.img 2.4.20-28.9 mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.4.20-28.9smp.img 2.4.20-28.9smp Additionally, installing a Red Hat kernel package automatically does the mkinitrd and grub.conf steps for you, so you only need to manually run the commands above if you want a special kernel module loaded before / is mounted, or if you have a custom compiled kernel. mkinitrd

I'm using mkinitrd on a multi-processor system. I have both the single and multi-processor kernels loaded, but I rarely run the single-processor kernel. It's there mostly as a safety net. Question: Do I need to boot to the single-processor kernel in order to make a valid initrd image for a single-processor boot? I would hope that I can, but the man page is not specific about it. I'm not volunteering because my calendar is more than full, but I wonder if there is any interest regarding the Sun Java Desktop System and how it works with Linux. Maybe someone in-the-know could offer a talk/demo? From sun.com: /In August of 2003, Sun Microsystems announced the Sun Java Desktop System, a software package that consists of a fully integrated client environment based on open source components and industry standards, offered as an affordable, comprehensive, simple-to-use, secure enterprise-grade desktop solution. Key features include a well-defined, integrated look and feel, familiar desktop themes, as well as file, folder, and print interoperability with Microsoft Windows and Linux/UNIX environments. /"The Java Desktop System is a comprehensive and secure enterprise desktop environment that runs on Solaris and Linux. It provides the enterprise with the first viable alternative to Windows in 15 years, by offering a complete feature set at a fraction of the cost of a Windows upgrade." Might be interesting...
