Great meeting last night!

Hey Everybody, Last night's meeting was fantastic! It's always great to get a full house! For those of you who were unable to make it, there were a number of fantastic mini talks. Login gave a great 15 minute rundown regarding the "audit2allow" tool to generate selinux rules. Login then proceeded to show how SElinux is running in lots of places... and then SSH'd into his phone to show that it was also run SElinux. kudos on the sshing over bluetooth from your laptop... that was cool. Greg then gave a great demo on a very lightweight security oriented linux called "Heads" (as opposed to the more well known "Tails" distribution. What was more amazing was that he was running it on a pretty old laptop and it was zippy... Though their support for mirroring displays could be a bit clearer! It was really impressive what you can do with a two core pentium laptop and a usb stick! Lastly, Chuck showed off Qubes. While the install didn't finish until we'd come back from dinner! Chuck was able to talk about the idea of separating applications into different Xen domains. It was really cool. Though we talked about this at and after dinner... I'm fearful that Xen is going the way of the dodo... I wonder if in the future the Qubes people will support other hypervisors. Thank to Login, Greg and Chuck for presenting and thanks to everybody for turning it into a lively and interesting round table discussion. I can try to get Qubes working again on my laptop. I kinda doubt it would work as a VM since it is based on Xen VMs itself. I was starting to plan to bring my tower with Kali and was wondering if a monitor would be available, but then i remembered I'd have to haul it up from the parking area. John, If I remember correctly, the equivalent of "assembly language" for the 1401 (either the IBM model or the IMB model) was "Autocoder". The IBM 1401 was introduced about 1961. By the time I started work at Aetna Life and Casualty in 1973, we had become the "Largest commercial user of IBM Equipment in the Free World". That means that maybe the government used more IBM computers, or that the Russians or the Chinese were using more IBM computers, but other than that AETNA WAS THE LARGEST. We AUTOMATICALLY ordered two of anything IBM announced. No sales person had to call us. IBM announced it: Aetna ordered two. So by that time we had lots of IBM 1401s and lots of Autocoder programmers. Then the IBM 360 line came out, and with it IBM's line of batch operating systems: MFT, MVT, VS-1, VS-2, and (finally) MVS. Hey Gang, Our next meeting is April 12th, 2018! Would people be interested in talking about security oriented versions of Linux? We all know about Tails, and in consideration of the issues that Richard ran into with getting stuff installed on Kali, it might be interesting to compare / contrast the different options out there. What do people think? I'm thinking this would work best as having a couple of people each showing off a particular distribution. Just plan to test enough that I feel confident it is doable before asking them. Yesterday I took pictures of Skylanders to see at what scale they still look good. At 64 pixels wide they are a little grainy. 128 pixels wide looks pretty good. Skylanders apparently has catch phrases for characters so I would like to get each kid to record a catch phrase for their character.

RFID reader/writer

Does anyone have a recommendation for a RFID reader/writer for Linux (and Windows if possible)? I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive solution. My kids just got Skylanders Imaginators. I found some code to read the characters. I started thinking about the Game Design merit badge for Cub Scout Webelos. I'm wondering about the viability of building a "portal" device and having the kids make clay figures with rfids inside the base. Obviously the game would be as complex as Skylanders. I'm thinking 2D using pictures of the models.

I'm pretty sure it does manage to open the framebuffer; I get the mouse cursor at what looks to be the monitor's native resolution. It probably throws that error before it tries a different method, but obviously I don't know. Creating a new user didn't clear anything up. I was able to log into the GUI session with the new user, but, again, there was nothing there but a solid background and the mouse cursor. Perhaps the upgraded packages don’t recognize a config buried somewhere. Here’s a couple things i would try. - Often times there a file in your home directory called .xsession-errors. I’d see if that file exists, and it may offer you some hints as to why your window manager is not starting. I recall launching X from a Graphical Login Window to be finicky in linux and error output is difficult to understand. the .xsession-errors file is where i’d look first. - Other idea is to create a new user, then login to the GUI with that user to make sure the GUI starts from a fresh environment. - The last idea i have. Before i reinstalled GDM3, bash wasn't even recognizing startx as a valid command. I haven't tried again since reinstalling GDM3. Maybe I'll try that after i finish in the kitchen. Kali Linux/GDM3 display manager

I found that, somehow, I had a more recent version of a Gstreamer-plugins library than GDM3 could run on. Hey Everybody, We've got a meeting tomorrow! Time: 7pm Location: WPI Mid-Century Room (rm 331) Topic: LUKS In light of our talk with Nick last month, I'm going to talk about LUKS (Linux Unified Key System) LUKS is an open on disk encryption standard that can be used to create encrypted volumes. I'm going to talk a bit about LUKS and then do a demo. Afterwards we'll head off for a burger of pizza. As usual refreshments and snacks will be provided. This is a 21.5" flatscreen, matte finish screen (not shiny-glarey), with both DVI and VGA inputs. This was working rock-solid until Friday night when it was sleeping, flashed for a second, and then black-screened. Crisp, sharp display always. Used daily but lightly (for second computer) since I got my newer monitor a few years ago, but almost always on, just sleeping most of the time. These are still running in the $90-100 range on the bigger online retailers. I know that there was talk of possibly changing the WLUG meeting date from Thursday February 8th to Tuesday February 20th, but I did not hear if this change is confirmed or not. Feb 8th is still listed on the google calendar/WLUG site. So wondering which day will the new meeting be? -Ron

The calendar on the website is a Google Calendar. Tim, Frank, and myself have access to change the calendar from any Google calendar client, including google.com/calendar. I recommend Jorte on Android, but the built-in Google calendar on Android should work fine as well. Ideally, whomever reserves a room and/or announces a meeting date/time/topic would update the calendar at the same time. Just change "only this event" so as to not mess up the default recurring schedule. The calendar is public so anyone can subscribe to it so it shows up on their own personal device(s): https://calendar.google.com/calendar?cid=bzVvc3E4NTBsazYxZThoMW4xbzFybGRiNz… Tuesday Feb 20th works for me. I found the Raspberry Pi Foundation's explanation the most useful: https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/why-raspberry-pi-isnt-vulnerable-to-spectr… I found some of the non-computer based metaphors a little lacking - they didn't really fit my mental model of the computer. The Raspberry Pi article explains it in a way that people familiar with basic Python (or almost any procedural language) will be familiar with. HOWTO create ISO that is both BIOS and UEFI bootable

Hi everybody, I've noticed that the Ubuntu 16.04 ISO is bootable on systems with BIOS as well as UEFI. From scratch, I've remastered Ubuntu, but my ISO file is only bootable via BIOS. I'd like to remedy that situation by figuring out what magic is needed so that my ISO file can be booted either way. I have a chroot directory in which my files live. I have scripts that convert all of that into an ISO file. My guess is that I need a new/modified incantation of mkisofs plus some additional files for UEFI. Despite a lot of searching, I've not yet found the info that I need. If you have definitive information, please let me know. Thanks! In the strictest sense this is true, but as far as the KRACK attack goes, the wireless AP side is much less likely to be a problem, because the vulnerabilities are in parts of the standards that are not often used (802.11r "Fast Roaming" for example). The client-side vulnerabilities, especially in Linux/Android, are much more serious. On Linux, the client can be tricked into using a null session key. However, in a coffee shop KRACK is moot because most coffee shops don't use encryption at all to begin with. In any case, WPI's recommendation to use the VPN if you are not sure of your device's or the network's immunity to KRACK is sound, because even if there was a M-i-t-M, they still would not be able to decrypt the VPN traffic. Security is helpful in layers. Belt-and-suspenders.

I pulled Cat 5 cable through the house years ago and never use wireless, but WPI has its hair on fire, and sent Professor Diane email (through Microsoft cloud service) to install "upgrades" immediately. I told her to at least wait until she has her computer back in the office and plugged into WPI cable. I have a friend who has been without a computer for a month or two because he tried to upgrade firmware and could not re-boot. This is very embarrassing for the authors of the standard, but is it really a big problem? Several meetings ago, somebody brought a device to the WLUG meeting that, as I understood it, pretends to be a wireless router and interposes itself into any nearby connection. If things like that exist, why care about encryption vulnerability? If you need to patch both sides to be secure, then you are not secure in the coffee shop no matter what you do. In any case, if you are using the wireless to connect to a web site or "cloud" server, then the wireless connection is the least of your insecurities. -- Keith

LEDE does a bunch of faster-paced development with the goal of having their work eventually merged back into OpenWRT. They often experiment with different ideas/features.

Hi Tim, The Anet A8 and TEVO tarantula are i3 derivatives, what with the hardware being open source. Each of these can be found on Amazon. The assembly guides are pretty cryptic though, with lots of skipped steps and a lack of images. However, If Ab Initio can afford the $600, I would seriously recommend getting Josef Prusa's original version, which he sells on his website. https://shop.prusa3d.com/en/3d-printers/59-original-prusa-i3-mk2-kit.html?g… The manuals are amazing, with an active community of people making revisions on Github. Thank you to the people who replied with questions or suggestions. Here is some additional info: The keyboard backlighting is what flashes briefly at start up attempt. The screen shows no light what so ever. Power it down. Press the Novo button with a paper clip or something small. This will bring you to the Novo menu which has bios,boot,and recovery entries. Lenovo Black Screen Issue

..hope this is not too off topic.. Have a friend with a Lenovo ideapad. The screen stays black and does not light up whatsoever. Would anyone have suggestions for best way to go with it? More details: The sticker on it gives further info: Windows 8, intel core i5, and Ultrabook. The power button lights up and stays on when you try to turn the unit on, as long as you keep the power cord plugged in. Apparently the battery holds no charge. The keyboard keys quickly flash once also when the start button is hit. The case does show some dents, and they say it was dropped a few times. They've tried disconnecting the battery thing with no luck. Any suggestions?

Hi Folks, A buddy of mine and I have been kicking around the idea of starting a local organization for building small robots the would be used in competitions. As a place holder name, we have chosen Autonomous Small Robot Association/Society/League. Attached is a link to a PDF file that provides a bare bones outline of the proposal. I hate to admit that I'm using Kali for a daily driver, but it usually works fine. Plus, it's based on debian. Anyway, I created /etc/resolvconf containing: nameserver 8.8.8.8 and that did the trick. I have connectivity now. I still want to understand the mechanics. Can you ping 8.8.8.8? If you can’t ping it, that would explain why you can’t resolve even if resolv.conf is correct. The syntax that others mentioned is good, you should be set if you can ping. If you can’t ping that, can you ping your gateway, what’s you up if you can’t? Hope that helps. DNS not resolving

I did a dist-upgrade on my computer. Afterward, I got an error related to a broken link for resolvconf. I read somewhere that the file gets created if it doesn't exist, so I unlinked and deleted the offending file (I think it was /etc/resolvconf, but I don't remember). Now I don't seem to have any DNS. I can still access my routers menu by typing in the dotted quad, but no alpha URLs. Any ideas? I entered the Google DNS addresses: 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.8.4 in the network settings GUI. That looks good, but addresses still aren't resolving.

I live under the flight path --hardly ever hear anything coming or going at night; never anything of commercial size. Occasional prop plane; rare baby jet. I think they have mostly daytime operations up there. But again, who/what company shuts down their routers and the other stuff, just to go back the next day and boot it all up again. Colleges don't that I know of, but I'd be suspect of free wifi that wasn't from the library anyway. What's your use case, including device? This is an unrooted Motorola Droid Turbo on Verizon. I found that I can go into Developer Settings on the phone, set the USB connection type to RNDIS, and my computer sees a USB network connection, but I haven't been able to get an IP address assigned; it says "connecting" for a bit, then fails. Android USB tethering

Does anyone have experience tethering an Android phone to their PC via USB? I'm trying FoxFi (pdanet.co) on my phone. It says you need to run companion software on your PC, and they offer that software for Windows and Mac, but not for Linux. I have an Arduino here, never used; new in packaging. This is an Arduino Uno, I guess the original, made in Italy. The kit contains the controller board, a 16 x 2 character LCD module (green screen), and a power supply. See wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arduino I will never use this, but I know someone can. Maybe a fun project for the right kid or parent/child combo to build something with it. Someone should come get this. I am conveniently located near Elm Park, not far from WPI and easy to find. You could drop by on your way to/from the meeting. I could tuck it away out of sight on the front porch for you, with your name on it. Liz J

I use Plex and would love to learn more about it, and about similar things, such as Kodi. All three topics are interesting. Plex holds more interest for me currently as I plan to soon build a new home NAS for professional, personal and entertainment data. Would want to include Plex in those plans. RetroPie is interesting too. Built one with my 10 year old son. He learned a lot. Dad can still win at Atari Combat. Hey Gang, Tomorrow we've got a meeting! Time: 7pm Location: WPI Student Center Room 331 Topic: glusterfs What is glusterfs? It's a distributed clustered file system. I recently did a talk about GFS2 and while interesting, it requires centralized storage, a knowledge about stuff like iscsi, etc. It's a beast to setup and isn't that flexible. glusterfs is a different animal. It's a flexible overlay filesystem that let's you take a bunch of basic servers and cluster them into a big homogenous filesystem. If you have four systems, each with 4TB worth of disk, you can make yourself a nice 16TB filesystem, or you can setup an 8TB filesystem with mirroring that spans all the machines or a couple of filesystems that do both depending on your needs. What's great about glusterfs is that it sits atop an existing filesystems on the machines and uses TCP to communicate with both fs clients and the node members. It also has a built in NFS server that allows it to be used by other non linux machines. As usual there will be snacks and refreshments and afterwards we'll head to tech for pizza. Ideas for next meeting (April 13th)

Lustre solves the problem by getting out of the way. The metadata server simply tells the client on which of the nodes the pieces of the file resides. Reading the documentation, when it comes to Lustre, split brain can't happen because the moment any of the meta controllers go offline, the whole thing stops. Definitely with ZFS if you don't start with a plan you're going to have a bad day. The current design for a node is a 1U HP DL360G7 server with ~144 or 288GB of ram. Internal storage is handled by the smart array controller. The next one I build I think I'm going to buy a 9200-8i and route the cables so that all the internal and external storage is JBOD. My current HBA card dejour for external storage is the LSI 9200-8e. As for external JBOD enclosures, there are LOTS of choices. Generally I've stuck with the promise J610s. It's essentially the "expansion" cabinet for a "smart" promise array. It's beauty is in it's abject stupidity. As for drives, currently all my stuff is running 4TB Seagate SAS drives. For "mainline" nodes, I configure them as raid10 pools. This gets me ~29TB of storage per pool For "backup" nodes, I configure them as raidz2 pools. All my backup nodes are 32 disk boxes so the pools are 116TB. Obviously this design is a balance between cost and performance. If I need more slots I'll use a 380 instead of 360 and I'll stick in an Intel X540-T2 10GigE card. It's fun to imagine if you scaled up the disks and the interconnects what a filesystem would look like. Tim. I've been messing around with "glusterfs" and it's pretty cool. I build 3 machine running RHEL7.2 each with an extra 250GB disk. I then setup a filesystem that stripes across all three machines. So it looks like a single 750GB filesystem. Over gigE I'm seeing okay performance ~50MB/s. Cool stuff. Next on my list of filesystems to play with it Lustre. First it splits into keys, stuffs the line into an assoc array of arrays. Then it sorts the assoc array and prints out those with more than one entry in it.
