Here's a possibly useful source of recommendations. And laser, even color laser, is getting much cheaper these days. And network scanning works for me too using SANE and gscan2pdf. Really handy. My next printer will be a brother, but this one refuses to die...

I've never had any problems printing from Linux to HP printers connected via IP over Ethernet or via USB. I've also had good luck with HP and Fujitsu Snascan scanners via USB, but not over the network. Scanning over the network is something I haven't figured out since I scan so infrequently and I just go plug the laptop into the scanner via USB. So you want an MFC type device. I'm still using my Brother MFC-8860DN from June 2006 without major problems. It's the older BR2 postscript engine, and the SANE drivers aren't supported on new linux distros because they use a library that's not available any more. It looks like it only support the BR3 PostScript, so make sure your driver is using that release. And make sure that you have cups configured with the right PPD for the printer. Still recommend the Brother printers, they have Linux support for sure on their web site, so you have to give them that. John

Hope this doesnt start a HUGE preference debate, but I'm taking feedback on what some of you already know to be a "solid" not too big laser black+white, flatbed/top scanner+copier (no top sheet feeder please, adds too much space/width) BUT THE PAIN is always in the PRINTER drivers/software, win or linux, in my experience. Honestly, been battling w/PDF's too long, to an old-ish Brother HL-L2395DW 3-in-1 --I'm working mostly on Linux Mint 19 (a deviant ubuntu I highly recommend for ex-win users) --Printing most things OK. IIRC, didnt have to find Linux drivers the hard way. --Printing PDF's gets iffy. LibreOffice sometimes cures my blues; DocumentViewer is probably the worst, "evince" also iffy, etc. Sometimes "Data received"....ends with a silent chirp, sometimes printer panel indicates a quick reject (nothing printed) saying "Out of Memory", BUT REALLY it's not the job == big, I think it must be a nasty runaway/leaky PDF->driver thing, but if I -- copy/email/send the nasty job to a win7 laptop and use AcroRead, USUALLY gets it done. Hey Gang, I hope you're having a happy and healthy safe 4th of July!! We've got a meeting next week! I'm going to give a quick demo on Min.io, we'll do a round table and I'm sure general tom foolery will occur! Our usual Jitsi haunt will be where we'll meet until things improve, though it's looking better for New England and worse for everybody else.. Check out the https://zesty.tech They make an system that essentially gets you the benefits of direct drive and bowden by remotely driving a feeder with an ultra stiff cable so you don't need to have the stepper on the print head. Nicholas, There's a company out there that makes a linear rail upgrade kit for the ender 3 and ender 5. The website is printermods.com The only thing they bring to the table is they've just assembled the parts, but still cool nome the less. This reminds me of the R/C model airplanes of my youth. They were not "proportional". They had a single channel that controlled the rudder. As you pulsed the transmitter the plane's rudder went from "center" to "full right" to "center" to "full left" to "center". As they got more sophisticated the rudder went in half-steps, but basically the same cycle. As long as the (gas) engine was running they gracefully climbed, and once the engine ran out of fuel then (hopefully) gracefully glided down. Sometimes it was not so graceful. Many times they ended up in trees. The receiver used a tube and a very heavy battery. The planes typically had a five or six foot wingspan, the fuselage was close to six feet long. The transmitter power leads clipped to your car battery. They would fly from five to ten minutes, limited mostly by the gas tank size and battery life of the receiver. There were a couple of guys who built these (the rest of the hobbyists, my brother included) flew control-line planes..... I never built one (I could not afford it), and so I more or less ignored R/C until thirty years later. All of a sudden there were IC based proportional R/C radios with more channels than a Sony TV that (seemingly) were about the size of a dime and could control these cute cars, boats, airplanes, heliocopters, all for less than 25 bucks.
