samba printer config

by Bill Mills-Curran

I'm floundering trying to get my fedora 3 machine to act as a print server for an WinXP machine. The linux box is freshly built, and I just moved my printer from my redhat 9 machine. What works: 1. Local printing. It's a USB printer, and it worked just fine from the CUPS setup. What doesn't: 1. I can't "add printer" on the WinXP machine. 2. When I start the smb daemon, I get the following in the smbd log: [2005/01/22 18:14:51, 0] printing/nt_printing.c:nt_printing_init(383) nt_printing_init: error checking published printers: WERR_ACCESS_DENIED This looks like the problem to me, but I'm not sure. When I try to add the printer in WinXP, I get a popup "Windows cannot connect to the printer. Operation could not be completed." So, I'm stuck. (And under pressure -- my wife can't print!) Any advice? Thanks, Bill

Soundcard gone bad?

by Michael Long

Hi, I have a soundblaster pro sound card that has been working well for several years. Tonight with I started xmms to listen to some music I get a very distorted sound at a very low volume. To test whether the speakers my be the problem I unplugged the external speakers and plugged in a set of headphones directly into the card and get no sound out of the headphones. The last time I listened to music everything was working well. The machine has not been rebooted since the last time I used the sound system. Is there anything else I can do to determine if the soundcard has failed or if the problem lies elsewhere. Thanks, Mike

LTSP Linux Administration.

by Patrick Sawyer

Howdy, We at the Worcester Computer Co-Op had an install fest a while ago where a few people said they might be able to do some administration for us. If anyone is still up to the task we would very much appreciate it. This is what we need. 1.Updating our network with new software (this can probably be done remotely?) 2.Getting more machines on the network( we have a strange system, but have 30 computers which are exactly the same and could be used for for the network. if someone could figure out how to get one on the network we could easily get all of them) Thanks to all who have helped in the past your time made it possible to give 10 computers to 10 families!!!! It doesn't unless you have just posted something incorrectly, and feel that you should click the little (and I do mean little) "Show options" link to see why you just humiliated yourself. Of course, if you were to just look at the to: field write about your reply text, you would probably notice who the actual reply goes to, but it's not really one of those things that you (and by 'you', I mean 'I') think to double check. Aw well, live and learn. Now that I know, I will probably double-check for days, maybe weeks, before I lose interest, and forget until the next time ;). So yeah, anyone want a gmail account, I've got a bunch of invites to give away ;P. <plug> Honestly, despite my storry of temporary incompetence (what, it *was* temporary) gmail is actually really nice. It, like pretty much everything that google does, blows any competition it might have out of the water. It is by far the best web-mail app out there, and it offers the most flexibility and features. </plug> So there, feel free to blacklist me so you can avoid this drivel in your inbox. Hey there, I want to preface this by saying that I have no specific experience in an embedded Linux development environment. That said, I have written Linux device drivers (PCMCIA) in the past, and I have extensive embedded development experience in my current position. (I can send you my CV, if that would help.) What is the duration/onsite requirement of the project? I am currently working full-time, but could be enticed away for a long-term contract, or I could do some on-the-side sort of work if the workload was less intense. Just putting out feelers. Well... it's not being utterly depreciated, it's being superseded with "udev". Basically, the /dev directory has become dynamic. http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/kernel/hotplug/udev.html Explains it quite nicely. Tim. If I were you, I wouldn't just give those away... Tektronix printers are notoriously expensive... i.e our printer here costs a 1.50 everytime you hit the print button (but it'll print poster quality images) you might have good luck selling them on Ebay... RE: [Wlug] Live Distro with VPN support

Sean, What I think you actually want is the VPN solution that used to be called FreeSWAN. The product has been discontinued, but there are now Two groups developing the product. The basic idea is that it implements IPSEC using either shared keys or X.509 certificates. The certificates can be generated by your server, and all Windows versions except W95 can setup a VPN connection. Nate Carlson and Jacco de Leeuw have tutorials http://www.jacco2.dds.nl/networking/win2000xp-freeswan.html --Skip --- Sean Flynn <sflynn(a)flynnsplaza.com> wrote: > I apologize if this has already been discussed, but after some cursory > googling and searching I haven't found an answer yet. > > I am the "computer guy" for our heating oil company. > The heating oil > software is running on a SCO box, and everyone in the office connects > to it over our Windows network. I have never done it myself, but you can take the knoppix cd and add your own software too it, then "remake" the knoppix cd. My question is if there is a vpn client for linux that will connect to your MS VPN. --- Sean Flynn <sflynn(a)flynnsplaza.com> wrote: > I apologize if this has already been discussed, but > after some cursory > googling and searching I haven't found an answer > yet. > > I am the "computer guy" for our heating oil company. > The heating oil > software is running on a SCO box, and everyone in > the office connects to > it over our Windows network.
