Power Supply Needed

by John Stoffel

Hi all, Anyone have a Ilssan ISF 120SI compatible Power supply they'd be willing to sell me cheap? This is for an eMachines box that died in a lightning storm. It's for a couple with limited means and I just don't have any spares around the house at all. Specs for what I'm looking for: Input: 100-120VAC 3A Ouput: +3.3V +5V +12V -12V +%VSB 6A 14A 2A 0.3A 0.72A 120W It's a small power supply with a built in Fan that sticks out. More info (web pages for compatible ones) available on request. Thanks, John

Re: [Wlug] RH8.0 user in Worc. area

by Mike Leo

We use RH8 as our primary DNS servers and they are pretty nice. Personally, though, i prefer the apt-get system to do updates. There are plenty of repositories for RH8 around for you to get updates from. I don't think i can help you out, but thought I'd share my experiance on up2date vs apt... also, if you install nmap, you can scan yourself for open ports...thats a quick way to see what holes are open. nmap -sS localhost will work. additionally, running the chkconfig --list|grep on command will show you all the services that are set to be running at any time...its good to shut those down with a quick server whatever stop, the chkconfig whatever off, the latter preventing that service from starting at boot. good luck...hope this helps a little anyway. mike --- Pete Wason <codevark(a)netscape.net> wrote: > Hiall! > > I'm wondering if anybody's using RH8.0 and could > assist me in a general package > updating/security audit/admin session. I live in Sutton.. > > Pete Hi Pete, If you have a specific question about RH8 I can take a swing at it or you can try the redhat-install list. RH8 has been end of lifed by RedHat. There probably isn't too much in the way of "up-to-date" updates available for it (if any at all). You may want to consider moving to a more recent RedHat product, and if cost is an issue, I recommends the redhat free line - Fedora. FC3 is probably the most stable Fedora release that is currently supported. FC4 has been released but may be a little rougher around the edges. Another distro worthy of consideration is Ubuntu at http://www.ubuntulinux.org/. Also free, but well supported. I urge you to move to a newer distro. The newer kernels are faster, and support better features and hardware. You'll also get better security support and updates. -- speech recognition software was used in the composition of this e-mail Jeff Kinz, Emergent Research, Hudson, MA. ¡Ya no mas!

I put it on one of my boxes recently. It's very easy to set up, and works nicely. The only kink I found after install was that it put a savedefault entry in my grub menu.lst, which rendered my system unbootable. Easy fix: delete the savedefault line, which you can do from the grub menu at boot time if you have to. I like kubuntu. The forums/doc are excellent. One thing I found is that, if you're used to all the extra software bits that come with Red Hat, you'll have to get used to kubuntu not having them. I came from Mandrake, and it didn't take me very long to figure things out and work around the missing bits -- it's mostly a matter of installing the packages that don't get installed by default. My advice: get Synaptic as soon as you're done, it's much better than the KDE version that comes with kubuntu. And you have to get used to the Debian packages (when you go to install other stuff on your own, you'll find that .deb packages aren't nearly as ubiquitous as .rpm ones). Once you get kubuntu working like you want, it's very stable, and very nice. I like it's release cycle better than Mandrake's -- the reason I switched was to get KDE 3.4 without sacrificing stability. Mandrake's latest official release doesn't support it, and the latest club release at the time was painfully buggy on my box -- I actually had to blow the whole thing away, and that's when I switched to kubuntu. HI Dick, I've been here recently. :-) First, I would check to see that your device is supported. Many devices don't work with Linux. You'll need the vendor/product info, which from your log is 0xd7d/0x1600. I never buy anything for USB without checking here first. http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices/ I took the liberty of checking for you and you may be SOL. The person who made the entry on this site couldn't get the device working either. I'm not really fluent in device stuff, but I just configured a RH9 machine for a project, and was trying to offload some config files to a flash drive. Thank god for mutt... My motherboard integrated graphics died this evening. It still works in console mode (have to boot to init 3), but when I try to start graphics, or go to init 5 -- caput. What I see is a most of the firmware boot (e machine logo) with fritzed colors in a band across the top -- about 15% of the screen. I was wondering if I could just add a new card and have that work. To do that, I suppose I'd have to find a way to disable the motherboard graphics card Any ideas? If this seems like a good idea, can you recommend a reasonable graphics card? I'm not a gamer. Temp job opening

by Mike Leo

wlug members, I work for a health care company in Wellesely Hills that may soon be looking for a temp linux/windows sys admin. I am not sure if this has been officially announced, so I make no promises, nor do I decide who gets hired, so don't look for favor's, nor be mad if this is false hope. I just wanted to extend the information to the team. However, if you are interested, we might by looking for someone with 3+ years linux support (RH) and a 6+ year windows background. we have 380+ Windows/Novell/linux servers, and the linux piece is growing faster and becoming business critical...thus the need for this person. Being the senior linux person here, I want to dedicate myself to linux, which will leave a gap in the windows support. This new role would be to fill in that windows gap, and support linux with me, bridging the gaps in both areas. This will be only a temp/contract position. Typically the contract is for 3 months, but all other contractors here stay until they find perminant rolls (here or elsewhere). There are also other factors that will be discussed if you make it to the interview process. If interested in submitting a resume, please email me at mleo963(a)yahoo.com and I will put your resume in with our recruiter. Thanks Mike

lrwxr-xr-x 1 bcurran bcurran 26 Sep 6 15:35 cookbook -> /expspace/ntdist/cookbook/ Here's a stab at an answer... That output shows that your client sees that file as a symlink. So when the client tries to access it, it knows it's a symlink and trys to follow it instead of the server following it for you. I bet you don't have a /expspace/ntdist/cookbook/ directory on your client? Try making one and see if it accesses that on the client. -Marc On 9/13/05, Bill Mills-Curran <bill(a)mills-curran.net> wrote: > Karl, > > On Tue, Sep 13, 2005 at 03:49:08PM -0400, Karl Hiramoto wrote: > > > > Are you using Absolute links( ex /usr/share ) or Relative (ex > > ../../usr/share)? > > I'm using absolute links, but I did try relative links. Here's an example: lrwxr-xr-x 1 bcurran bcurran 26 Sep 6 15:35 cookbook -> /expspace/ntdist/cookbook/ Note that the owner is not really bcurran -- that changed just like a typical samba mount. The thing that's interesting is that a windows box follows the link just fine, so I have to conclude that this is a client-side issue. I recently upgraded from RH9 to fc3, and that's when I noticed this new (can't follow a link) behavior. BTW, I am able to follow a link on the same directory, so I'm assuming that this is a "cross device" issue. Are you using Absolute links( ex /usr/share ) or Relative (ex ../../usr/share)? What apears as the link on the client? Does the link apear, or is it just a empty dir? My plan is this: What some people do is use 'rbackup' which will only backup those files which actually change, and hardlink to the un-changed ones. This way each snapshot looks complete, but they're actually fairly compressed. http://www.mikerubel.org/computers/rsync_snapshots/ And google for "rbackup rsync snapshot" and you'll get more hits. Adam> o Acquire a cheap used PIII pc. Install the 200GB drive and Centos Adam> (for familiarity's sake, RHEL is one of the distros I use at work) sounds good. I've been looking to setup a main home file/backup/mysql/http server type device with lots of disk. But I want it to be *quiet* so I can just leave it on all the time and not worry about noise bothering people. Unlike my current do everything box which is loud. One of the Via EPIC boards looks nice, if it could hold enough disks to make a good RAID5 setup with hotspare. John
