Any ideas? If this seems like a good idea, can you recommend a reasonable graphics card? I'm not a gamer. The most graphics-intensive thing I do is watch a movie.

Oops. Maybe not hardware... I forgot that I ran up2date yesterday morning and installed the newest xorg-x11 packages. I also installed wine (just deinstalled it). I hadn't rebooted after installing the X packages until the reboot that showed the problems. Hmm... Any ideas? Is there an "easy" way to revert to the previous version of the X packages? Thanks, Bill
