Re: [Wlug] Anyone with Verizon fios?

by Jim Dibb

Check here for lots of info http://www.dslreports.com/forum/vzfiber I don't think you're required to use their router. And, I don't think it prevents anything, it's just a standard off-the-shelf home router that's 'certified' to support the speeds. I've looked into it a lot but so far am 'in the dark' as far as being able to get it. Stop by later... Anyone using Verizon FiOS? The service looks interesting, but they require their own router. I'm wondering if that prevents all incoming connections, like ssh? Also, the rates they quote on the web page refers to a "bundle discount", but they don't say what a bundle is. Bill

Call me silly, but it would also probably help to mount the drive no matter how you get the drive on a diff/new system. Figure out what device the drive is recognized as (i.e. /dev/hda, /devb/hdb, etc.) and do the following: 1) Create a temporary mount point under /mnt mkdir /mnt/tmp 2) Mount the drive on that mount point. mount /dev/hdX /mnt/tmp where X is the drive letter assigned to the drive when the system boots. The system should be smart enough to auto-detect the filesytem type and not require you to pass options when you try and mount it. Use a bootable CD, such as gentoo live, or knoppix http://www.knoppix.net/ Copy the stuff over the network.. with the boot CD you can setup a NFS server to do that, or FTP, or scp, rsync, or whatever. If you have the fresh install on a new HD, you should be able to see the 2nd HD. What kind of hd is it? sata, or eide? type "dmesg" on the new system and you should see what the drive got connected as. If you plugeed the old drive as secondary master it would show as /dev/hdc then you could mount the drive with "mount /dev/hdc1 /mnt" If you plugeed the old drive as the first SATA drive it would show as /dev/sda then you could mount the drive with "mount /dev/sda1 /mnt" This is assuming you have your data on the first partition. All of your data would be in /mnt Good luck. Michael Zarozinski wrote: > Hi All, > > I've got a bit of a problem... we have a linux server that contained 2 > hard drives. by Hemstreet, Jeffrey L (Jeffrey)

When you put the 2nd HDD in the system that you built, did you 'mount' the old drive. The system will not automatically mount the old drive when you install it. Putting it into a working system to access the data is the best way. Yes, windows will automatically mount a new drive if it sees a valid formatted partition, but Linux generally does not. jeff -----Original Message----- From: wlug-bounces(a)mail.wlug.org [mailto:wlug-bounces@mail.wlug.org] On Behalf Of Michael Zarozinski Sent: Wednesday, February 01, 2006 2:32 PM To: wlug(a)mail.wlug.org Subject: [Wlug] Rescuing Data From a Hard Drive Hi All, I've got a bit of a problem... we have a linux server that contained 2 hard drives. Yep, I'm pretty sure that was the graphical installer. Normally, for a stage1 install there is a 60M cd image that boots and has only command-line, but has many drivers that would be needed for a wide range of system installs. This method has an install guide of 7-8 webpages (the handbook) that walk you through everything from installing the basic packages to building a kernel and then setting up grub. The only complicated part is setting the CFLAGS and USE variables. -Jared On 1/31/06, Mike Leo <mleo963(a)yahoo.com> wrote: > I did not try ( or know of) a graphical installer... > > i booted off the "livecd" and walked through the handbook to install....then gave up... > > thanks for the feedback anyway. > > --- Greg Labonte <gbonte(a)WPI.EDU> wrote: > > > Just wondering Mike, Did you try using the Graphical installer for > > Gentoo? > > > > > > > On 1/30/06, Mike Leo <mleo963(a)yahoo.com> wrote: > > >> Am I wrong, or is the gentoo install insanely comlicated? > > >> > > >> Although I did not sit in front of it from start to finish, it > > >> seems like an install takes hours > > >> and hours of work... > > >> > > >> I followed the Handbook (some 80 pages of documentation), which > > >> i'm sure is very accurate and each > > >> step worked as advertised, but in the end it was too much. > > >> > > >> After an install of debian, which takes me less than 20 minutes, > > >> this was too much for my poor > > >> little brain to take, and I eventually gave up. > > >> > > >> In addition to that, I can't for the life of me, get slackware to > > >> consistantly install lilo > > >> correctly during the install. > > >> > > >> Any comments on either of these would be apreciated, however, I am > > >> just writing this to toss my > > >> vote in for a linux install fest as a meeting topic. > > >> > > >> I have no problem bringing in a laptop to show the simple, > > >> eligant, streamlined, 20 minute debian > > >> install, but I would like to also see someone go through a gentoo > > >> install, and assist on a > > >> slackware lilo config...all of which can be done via my laptop if > > >> needed. > > >> > > >> Thanks ! > > >> Mike > > >> _______________________________________________ > > >> Wlug mailing list > > >> Wlug(a)mail.wlug.org > > >> http://mail.wlug.org/mailman/listinfo/wlug > > >> > > > > > > _______________________________________________ > > > Wlug mailing list > > > Wlug(a)mail.wlug.org > > > http://mail.wlug.org/mailman/listinfo/wlug > > > > _______________________________________________ > > Wlug mailing list > > Wlug(a)mail.wlug.org > > http://mail.wlug.org/mailman/listinfo/wlug > > > > _______________________________________________ > Wlug mailing list > Wlug(a)mail.wlug.org > http://mail.wlug.org/mailman/listinfo/wlug >

You can get up to 1/8192Hz (122us) periodic interrupts with the x86 RTC timer. You might have to do a little setup, like, # modprobe rtc # echo 8192 > /proc/sys/dev/rtc/max-user-freq [ fiddle permissions on /dev/misc/rtc or /dev/rtc unless you are running your app as root ] See Documentation/rtc.txt in the kernel source for programming details. Basically the kernel is free to idle or run other things until the RTC interrupt hits, then it wakes up your app doing read() or poll() on /dev/rtc. I used this to pulse a hardware register in a project I did a few years ago, worked good enough for my purposes. You might lose an RTC interrupt here and there if your system is under heavy load (call it "soft realtime"), but I think the interface tells you if and how many you lost. There's also the more advanced HPET timer available for newer x86 systems, but I haven't looked at that yet. Good luck, -Jamie Guinan

Re: [Wlug] meeting topic

I have Gentoo on my notebook and it works great! I especially like the fact that the package that has my wireless card in it (orinoco_usb) was written so that it will automatically download the cvs HEAD and build that so I get the most up to date driver. I've had this installed for about a year and it only took about a day to install it, but that was mostly due to the fact that I choose the stage1 install, which isn't the main documented installation method anymore (stage3 is now). Its not that its hours and hours of work - its more like a little research up front and a hours of entering data in here and there (at least in my experience). If you're going for ease of install and use I would def have to throw my hat in the ubuntu ring. Kubuntu is about the easiest install I've seen. -Jared On 1/30/06, Mike Leo <mleo963(a)yahoo.com> wrote: > Am I wrong, or is the gentoo install insanely comlicated? > > Although I did not sit in front of it from start to finish, it seems like an install takes hours > and hours of work... > > I followed the Handbook (some 80 pages of documentation), which i'm sure is very accurate and each > step worked as advertised, but in the end it was too much. > > After an install of debian, which takes me less than 20 minutes, this was too much for my poor > little brain to take, and I eventually gave up. > > In addition to that, I can't for the life of me, get slackware to consistantly install lilo > correctly during the install. > > Any comments on either of these would be apreciated, however, I am just writing this to toss my > vote in for a linux install fest as a meeting topic. > > I have no problem bringing in a laptop to show the simple, eligant, streamlined, 20 minute debian > install, but I would like to also see someone go through a gentoo install, and assist on a > slackware lilo config...all of which can be done via my laptop if needed. > > Thanks ! > Mike > _______________________________________________ > Wlug mailing list > Wlug(a)mail.wlug.org > http://mail.wlug.org/mailman/listinfo/wlug >

meeting topic

by Mike Leo

Am I wrong, or is the gentoo install insanely comlicated? Although I did not sit in front of it from start to finish, it seems like an install takes hours and hours of work... I followed the Handbook (some 80 pages of documentation), which i'm sure is very accurate and each step worked as advertised, but in the end it was too much. After an install of debian, which takes me less than 20 minutes, this was too much for my poor little brain to take, and I eventually gave up. In addition to that, I can't for the life of me, get slackware to consistantly install lilo correctly during the install. Any comments on either of these would be apreciated, however, I am just writing this to toss my vote in for a linux install fest as a meeting topic. I have no problem bringing in a laptop to show the simple, eligant, streamlined, 20 minute debian install, but I would like to also see someone go through a gentoo install, and assist on a slackware lilo config...all of which can be done via my laptop if needed. Thanks ! Mike

(although I have had great experience with it on the RHEL distro with Red Hat Network) I'm a big fan of yum. I think Seth Vidal has done a great job with it and I have used it to upgrade several systems. I have taken one box (standard LAMP stuff) from FC1 => FC4 with no problems. After a backup of /var and /home, my general procedure is to: a) 'yum update' my box to ensure latest/greatest from the Fedora Base and Fedora Updates repositories. b) manually install fedora-release RPM. c) manually install yum rpm for the release (in your case FC4) that you are upgrade to. d) double check that I have GPG check enabled in my yum config files and I also have the correct keys on my ring. e) do a sanity check that I have good network connectivity to the remote repository that I am going to pull my RPMs from (personally, I've settled on mirrors.kernel.org) f) yum upgrade g) review the list of packages it marks for upgrade and the associated dependency checking for sanity. h) cross fingers. hit 'Y'. go get coffee. That's why you're almost always better off using 'yum' instead of 'up2date'. Yum is smart enough to track down and install dependencies for you. I would abandon using up2date unless you're using RedHat Enterprise Linux (which you're obviously not). You'd still have the same problem with yum that you had with up2date regarding the "system thinks it's FC3 instead of FC4" issue (hint: manually update an rpm by the name of "fedora-release") --Matt

In the future though, you may find these guys helpful: http://fedora.isphuset.no/ They rebuild the install ISO images periodically *with* the latest updates. This this is a known problem. glibc in FC3 was updated to one newer than any available glibc for FC4, causing most of the system to not upgrade. > Running up2date did not help -- I was still in an FC3 system (kind of). Try using 'yum update' instead. up2date is not really being maintained as the way forward, and it isn't beat on as heavily as yum. Also, try first removing all old kernels, leaving just the newest (2.6.12-1.1381_FC3), and manually downgrade glibc to the latest FC4 one. > I feel lucky that I didn't brick my system. Yeah, the maintainer of the glibc package doesn't think this is important enough to fix right away: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=172823 It seems that the Fedora developers now recommend re-installs as opposed to upgrades, which is a shame since Fedora Core and Red Hat Linux before it were always known for their stellar upgradeability. Hopefully with the formation of the Fedora Foundation, more and more of Fedora Core itself will be community-maintained, where people who care about such things as upgradeability can make sure that goal is maintained.

I had partitions setup the following way /boot / swap /home /usr/local/ This way I can keep the users data and just install a new system over it. I think that Debian's method of package management is the best of any of the Linux Distro's. I a year ago I switched from FC3 to Ubuntu because Ubuntu has a 6 month release cycle, similar to FC and Ubuntu pays individuals to fix security vulnerabilities. --Josh > I drifted from RH to Mandrake (pre-Mandriva) and then to Gentoo. > Though not without the occasional bump, I've found Gentoo's approach to > package management the least violent of them all. > > Nathan > > > > > Running up2date did not help -- I was still in an FC3 system (kind of). > > > > I manually installed the FC4 kernel and ran up2date again, but it was > > stuck on many packages, because up2date only wanted to freshen > > existing rpm's -- it didn't want to add any new ones to solve > > dependencies. > > > > After much arm-wrestling (floundering?), I gave up on the GUI up2date > > and ran with the command line, feeding it chunks of rpms that needed > > updating. > > > > I feel lucky that I didn't brick my system.
