If you want to limit the publickey users to only run certain commands that you control, just setup their ~/.ssh2/authorized_keys file properly withthe public key and the locked down command of your choice. Try using the 'nameif' command to fix which MAC address is bound to which eth* name. You'll probably need to do: udevinfo -a -p /sys/class/net/eth0 and see what shows up. It might be best to do this after setting up all six interfaces (not caring what is where) so you can get their MAC addresses and put them into the table. John

HWADDR doesn't assign MAC addresses to NICs. It just matches the NIC device with that hardware address. MACADDR actually reprograms the MAC used by a NIC.

MySQL replication question

Does anyone have experience with MySQL's replication capabilities? I'm running versions 4.1.8 and 4.1.14 servers on linux and windows, and I have a very remote site where I'd like to support replication. The data changes very slowly, but the link has 300 ms (ping) latency and has a small (but noticeable) amount of down time. Does it work well enough to be considered reliable for critical applications? TIA, Bill

I used buildroot and Busybox from the embedded Linux world, the Linux kernel (with patches), and the SuSE Firewall scripts, to make a working firewall. The firewall has been up for 13.5 days straight with no discernable problems. It passed a recent screening by nessus. Linux firewall 2.4.30 #12 Sun Jan 22 20:31:58 EST 2006 mips unknown 21:56:47 up 13 days, 12:46, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00 I'll bring the box to the meeting and use it in a live demo. I forwarded your question on to a friend who has it; this is his response: "I have had been using FIOS since last September, and so far so good. They give you a cheap Dlink wired router with the install. Once I had everything up and running I replaced their router with my Linksys wireless router and it has been working with no problems. The bundle discount is for FIOS data and POTs service. I pay $35 for FIOS 5/2 connection and $40 for unlimited local and long distance calling. This gets me a $5 bundle discount so my total is $70 a month plus taxes. So far the service has been great, but I have not had any power failures to test the UPS yet." My comments: if/when they (FIOS) ever get out to where I live, I'd like to stick with my VoicePulse VoIP for $15/mo, bringing the total to $50/mo. And, I don't think it prevents anything, it's just a standard off-the-shelf home router that's 'certified' to support the speeds. Call me silly, but it would also probably help to mount the drive no matter how you get the drive on a diff/new system. Figure out what device the drive is recognized as (i.e. /dev/hda, /devb/hdb, etc.) and do the following: 1) Create a temporary mount point under /mnt mkdir /mnt/tmp 2) Mount the drive on that mount point. mount /dev/hdX /mnt/tmp where X is the drive letter assigned to the drive when the system boots. The system should be smart enough to auto-detect the filesytem type and not require you to pass options when you try and mount it. Use a bootable CD, such as gentoo live, or knoppix http://www.knoppix.net/ Copy the stuff over the network.. with the boot CD you can setup a NFS server to do that, or FTP, or scp, rsync, or whatever. If you have the fresh install on a new HD, you should be able to see the 2nd HD. What kind of hd is it? sata, or eide? type "dmesg" on the new system and you should see what the drive got connected as. If you plugeed the old drive as secondary master it would show as /dev/hdc then you could mount the drive with "mount /dev/hdc1 /mnt" If you plugeed the old drive as the first SATA drive it would show as /dev/sda then you could mount the drive with "mount /dev/sda1 /mnt" This is assuming you have your data on the first partition. When you put the 2nd HDD in the system that you built, did you 'mount' the old drive. The system will not automatically mount the old drive when you install it. Putting it into a working system to access the data is the best way. Rescuing Data From a Hard Drive

Hi All, I've got a bit of a problem... we have a linux server that contained 2 hard drives. The one with the boot information died - LUCKILY the data we NEED was on the hard drive that lived. My question is... how can I recover the data I need? I've been able to boot to the shell using the install disk and can see the data I need but that shell doesn't provide access to the network card so I can copy the data off. I tried a fresh install on a new HD but when I attatch the 2nd HD (with the data I need) I can't see it. Forgive me, I come from the windows world where just plugging in the old HD would allow me to pull the data off. Any ideas/help/etc is greatly appreciated! Michael Z

Yep, I'm pretty sure that was the graphical installer. Normally, for a stage1 install there is a 60M cd image that boots and has only command-line, but has many drivers that would be needed for a wide range of system installs. This method has an install guide of 7-8 webpages (the handbook) that walk you through everything from installing the basic packages to building a kernel and then setting up grub. Basically the kernel is free to idle or run other things until the RTC interrupt hits, then it wakes up your app doing read() or poll() on /dev/rtc. I used this to pulse a hardware register in a project I did a few years ago, worked good enough for my purposes. You might lose an RTC interrupt here and there if your system is under heavy load (call it "soft realtime"), but I think the interface tells you if and how many you lost. There's also the more advanced HPET timer available for newer x86 systems, but I haven't looked at that yet. Good luck, -Jamie Guinan

I tried it when it came out and it didn't really seem to simplify installation at all. It was just a graphical representation of the actions normally performed on the command-line.
