Ubuntu with SSSD

by Kevin Harrington

I have a lab full of Ubuntu 22.04 machines and have (finally) set them all up with AD login via SSSD As i was testing, new SSSD users were added to the Gnome3 Greeter bage. Somewhere along the way with testing, new users stopped being added to the greeter page. The ones added previously automatically are still there, but new ones are not being added. I was wondering what configurations effects this behavior? I want the little kids names added to the list so they can just click on their name and enter their password. Here is my setup script: https://github.com/BancroftSchoolOpenSource/UbuntuSetupScript Any tips would be helpful! -- Bancroft School 110 Shore Dr, Worcester, MA 01605 *T:* 508-853-2640 | *F*: 508-853-7824 www.bancroftschool.org <http://www.bancroftschool.org>

Re: Debian 12 networking

If you become desperate with this, it might be worth the time to confirm that your SD card is accepting writes. Creating a text file then verifying that it is still there on reboot should be sufficient. When I had the sd card issue with my PI3 it was otherwise silent (it must have been working from ram). I have heard that SD cards can fail where they stop accepting all writes after too many writes to them. Otherwise, I not of any help. It has been a LONG time since I have used depmod and related, which I assume will be needed to update the kernel modules. Zimma Board

by Kevin Stratton

This might be old news and off the Raspberry 5 topic. I have been looking at the Zimma Board for a SBC to mess with. It is a different type of board for a different use case. I am mostly focused on the performance and SATA port(s). I do not like burning out SD cards. Possible uses: 1) open media vault 2 drive NAS 2) Low end (low power, low budget) web page server 3) pihole with a firewall (x86 build) I would like to know if anyone has an opinion on this board.

Re: Debian 12 networking

by Mike Long

Tim, Thanks for your reply. I'm working with an RPI4 with Debian 12 installed as a hobby server. Since ifconfig is being depreciated on Debian I was determined to learn how to use ip. I eventually found this cheat sheet https://access.redhat.com/sites/default/files/attachments/rh_ip_command_che… I was able to manually configure eth0 for network connectivity. Next I did an apt update, apt upgrade successfully. This eliminated the "filtering via arp/ip/ip6tables" error. Now I can continue troubleshooting why network stopped working. I hear you on the "no agenda" issue. I want to get back to having a defined topic and actually doing a presentation and then moving onto the general conversation. I think many people when they don't see we have a topic, decide not to come. I'm proposing for the next meeting that I do a talk on the useability of the pi5. I'm going to buy one as soon as it comes out and start mucking with it. I'm actually thinking what I might try to do is make it my daily driver at home and see how that goes. I didn't notice much of a performance issue with last night's meeting. If anything, the meetings are hard to follow from Jitsi now that most people are joining the meetings in-person but there isn't an agenda or some other signifier for what the topic is. The open-ended conversation format is fine, but doesn't always translate well for anyone joining virtually. One of the nice things about Jitsi Meet is that you can screenshare a slideshow for people to follow, but that doesn't seem to be leveraged. That being said, I would be all for a self-hosted Jitsi! Mike, You might want to start by installing the package "net-tools" and "wireless-tools"; these two packages will get you the "ifconfig" command as well as the "iwconfig" command. so you can see what the network is doing. I'm old school and while I've learned to use the "ip" commands, my hands naturally want to type "ifconfig -a". Thanks, Tim. Debian 12 networking

by Mike Long

I installed Debian 12 on a PI4. I got rtl_433 working and receiving data while connected to the pi4 using ssh. Once that was accomplished I rebooted via "sudo shutdown -r now" to verify that all the settings would survive a reboot. When the pi rebooted it was no longer available on the network. I connected to the pi4 console directly and received this message at the login screen "filtering via arp/ip/ip6tables is no longer available by default". I am new to debian and not having ifconfig available is a real handicap for me. Can someone please offer some advice or point me to resources that will help me fix this issue. Searching the internet has not offered any helpful resources so far. Thanks, Mike

Or if you're willing to spend money, there are cloud companies that do conversions for you to svg. > I was trying QCad as there is a reference of dxf2png - but it keeps > crashing in my instance of Fedora. And have you tried LibreCAD or OpenSCAD to read in the file and then export in another format? John

Re: DWG to ... well anything else

Hi, Supported lots of CAD in a prior life. CAD users almost never convert file types, when they do they loose part and timeline data. Autocad always used to offer free CAD file viewer applications which work very well. DWG to ... well anything else

by Ben Higgins

So we have directory after directory of AutoCAD DWG files of the various floors of the campus. Beyond *creating* the floorplans, we have no use for AutoCAD - all our applications work better with high quality PNG or vector PDF files. I've been playing with Pipelines and jobs in GitLab recently, and I'm looking for a way to convert a DWG file to something more usable in my automation. Pretty much if a user checks in the updated DWG, it's exported to PNG and scp'd to our patch database server. I was trying QCad as there is a reference of dxf2png - but it keeps crashing in my instance of Fedora. Any thoughts? Benjamin J.
