Jitsi..

Last night it was brought to my attention that Jitsi has decided to become more "zoom" like. That sucks. Moreover, and I've noticed this as well, their free instance's performance is all over the place.. some meetings the performance is spot on, other meetings, like last night, it was not so great. There should be zero barriers to people joining the meeting. To this end, I'm going to explore what it's going to take to stand up my own Jitsi instance. Likely hosted in some cloud provider with possibly a nice DNS entry. Thanks, Tim. -- I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their constituents as "consumers".

Last night's meeting was great! We got Matt setup with a macbook running Ubuntu, got into the weeds talking about SSSD and rounded it out with some talk about the pi5. Kevin then showed off the Eagle file browser. Hopefully next month we'll have a pi5 to do some hands on screwing around with! Later, Tim. Mike, You might want to start by installing the package "net-tools" and "wireless-tools"; these two packages will get you the "ifconfig" command as well as the "iwconfig" command. so you can see what the network is doing. I'm old school and while I've learned to use the "ip" commands, my hands naturally want to type "ifconfig -a". Thanks, Tim. Debian 12 networking

I installed Debian 12 on a PI4. I got rtl_433 working and receiving data while connected to the pi4 using ssh. Once that was accomplished I rebooted via "sudo shutdown -r now" to verify that all the settings would survive a reboot. When the pi rebooted it was no longer available on the network. I connected to the pi4 console directly and received this message at the login screen "filtering via arp/ip/ip6tables is no longer available by default". I am new to debian and not having ifconfig available is a real handicap for me. Can someone please offer some advice or point me to resources that will help me fix this issue. Searching the internet has not offered any helpful resources so far. Thanks, Mike

Hi, Supported lots of CAD in a prior life. CAD users almost never convert file types, when they do they loose part and timeline data. Autocad always used to offer free CAD file viewer applications which work very well. DWG to ... well anything else

So we have directory after directory of AutoCAD DWG files of the various floors of the campus. Beyond *creating* the floorplans, we have no use for AutoCAD - all our applications work better with high quality PNG or vector PDF files. I've been playing with Pipelines and jobs in GitLab recently, and I'm looking for a way to convert a DWG file to something more usable in my automation. Pretty much if a user checks in the updated DWG, it's exported to PNG and scp'd to our patch database server. I was trying QCad as there is a reference of dxf2png - but it keeps crashing in my instance of Fedora. Any thoughts? Benjamin J. So you're not going to get a static IP address at home. It might *seem* to be static since it doesn't move or change often, but it can and will. I use DynDNS for my dnyamic external DNS needs. I really should do something else, but I've been lazy. As for NAT, it should be setup by default for your new Charter Spectrum setup. But only for outgoing connections. Incoming might be more difficult, but it depends on what kind of access you have to the router behind the cable modem. You said you got a Wifi device, can you post a model number? I strongly suspect it's a firewall/four port switch/wifi access point all in one. And depending on which model is is... you might have full control over it. I personally run OPNsense at home on my own hardware, and totally seperate Wifi hardware. But I'm a masochist at times. I suspect you have it cabled like this: Street ==> cable ==> cable modem --> rj45 --> wifi/router/switch So plug your laptop into the last item and see if you get assigned an IP address using DHCP. You might need to turn it on on your laptop if you have it already turned off because you do static IPs at home. Just looking to get an IP on there (also, turn OFF your laptop wifi for now) and confirm that the cable modem part is working. They might have a pre-printed wifi SSID and password on the wifi/router/switch, so you could use that info as well to get an IP address and then confirm your new cable modem is working. John

One thing I've been looking into is using Ansible to setup my mail server in the cloud, so that I have a repeatable setup, and so I can also 1. clone it easily to home for backups 2. move it easily to another provider if need be, without having to remember all my customizations. I was working on it today. All hell broke; nothing worked, not the new stuff, and not the DSL that has been working (mostly) for years. I spent a frantic hour undoing everything, nothing helped. Finally, I did what I have done so many times in the past when the internet connection did not work. I power-cycled the DSL modem --- all better. Now who'll stop the rain? -- Keith

So far I printed out a 2x4 base plate and a couple smaller containers. I love the idea that the system is totally open and there are step files available so you can expand on it. between copious amounts of ikea skadis pegboard and my tool chest I think I can organize my tools in a way where I can adhere to the Adam Savage rule of first retrieval. Since we have a meeting this Thursday, this can be yet something else to talk about. Tim. I've been following the gridfinity saga for some time now. There are actually a lot more designs available on some of the 3d print sharing sites too. There are also a few other projects with the same concept, I've also looked at hexagon based one. If I could just get my z-axis on my 3d printer stable maybe I could actually print some. Gridfinity open source organization..
