ipaq and QTe

Hey Gang, I finally installed linux on my ipaq, and installed QT embedded last night, and part of this morning. I like it so far, there are a few things that are missing, one of which i find to be a real big down side. I can't seem to turn off the back light. I don't want all my batter sucked up from the backlight. Anyone else have this problem know how to fix this, or have any suggestions? i was also wondering if anyone knows of any/some good sync tools, for linux, and the ipaq. Thanks, --Brad

Actually, anything besides a Windows PC browsing the web via http is most likely considered a violation of their policies. The cable modem that I have from charter (Motorola Surfboard 4100) cache's and locks onto one MAC address. You need to reboot the cable modem by unplugging it and plugging it back in (Or going to the modem's webpage at http://192.168.100.1 and restarting it). Not sure if this is your problem, but in people questions about Charter I haven't heard anyone mention this "feature" of the modem their handing out now. Hi, I just got broadband at home and am loving every minute of it. But I'm hitting one snag... I dusted off an old sonicwall we had lying around at my job and got permission to take it home, after hacking the firewall I got everything set up and ready to go, my wan was hooked up to the cable modem, my lan was hooked up to the hub, the dhcp server was set up, and I had NAT w/dhcp client as the default setting. So I reboot the firewall and it doesn't get an ip address! I erase any trace of the older, static, settings, and try again, noting. Has anyone else got this problem? I'm stuck with Charter communications, do they have some way to avoid giving addresses to firewalls; if so, hello DSL my wife is tied to windows and I'm not shelling out money for something that comes built into linux. Mandrake snags just about any kind, though my usb nic had to be hand configured even though it knew what it was. The winmodem is the problem. I had one, and got it to work under the 2.2 kernels, but to the best of my knowledge, the patch hasn't been done yet for the 2.4 kernels. You have two choices: go back to a 2.2 kernel or get another modem. If your box has an ISA slot, you can get a 56K Rockwell chip modem for about the same bucks as a winmodem. The AOpen models sells for around $30.00. Hello, It is quite probably that the winmodem will never work with Linux, but indeed there are a (very) few that do. Check this website for more information: http://www.linmodems.org/ If you really need the modem, I'd advise you to go buy a real one (e.g. not a winmodem). Also, you will need to know which network card you have, or more importantly, the name/number of (probably the) biggest chip on the board. With this information, we can help you to configure it properly. We would be happy to help if you can supply this information to us. dan; yes, i can ping client to server and server to client. i looked at ipchains -L -n and the only source other than 0.0.0.0/0 was 192.168.1.1 which is the ip address of the server and the target was accept at ports 53 -> *. the other accept was prot all source 0.0.0.0/0 and ports n/a. everything else had target of reject (tcp udp) et.al. chain forward policy is accept chain output policy is accept now to be honest with you, i haven't much of a clue what the above means. hopefully, you do. any more help muchly appreciated. jim s

Using foreign characters in filenames

On some FTP sites, I've come across directory names that contain foreign characters. I am using the standard *nix commandline FTP client, and was wondering how one goes about typing characters. I can use Mozilla to traverse the directory structure, and although it displays properly, if I click the direcotry name, It brings me to a page labeled: Index of /%E9%E9%E4%20%E7%E3%E4 the %20 is a space, the rest of the characters are foreign vowels. And I can continue traversing the tree from there. Internet explorer works the same way on my windows machine. But in order to use the command line FTP program, I'd have to actually type it in (cut 'n paste doesn't work). Even outside of FTP, I have had files with foreign characters, and they're a pain to manipulate without a GUI.

We print to this printer in Windows using a Windows 2000 print server. I am the maverick I want to dual boot Windows and Linux. Using CUPS (Common Unix Printing Service) with IPP, Socket, and other setup lines. Not sure of the command line for this. I tried editing the /etc/printcap, and /etc/printrc files. I Got the PDD for the HP 5Si printer. I thought maybe my editing of printcap or printrc was stopping the CUPS or other methods of setup from working so I went back to the original copies. Oh ya, before you say something simple like read the print man page--I did, also I went to Mandrake documentation, HP printing for Unix web page, read the documentation at Linuxprinting.org web site, Read the printing documentation at Red Hat web site. Not sure it is a HP Jetdirect network card in the printer. Though I suspect I could use HP Jetdirect software to set it up on a Windows machine. I guess what I really need is someone who has printed from a Linux variant to a networked HP printer. Everything I read says this is traditionally a hard issue because of varies issues. Compatibility has been an issue. System: Mandrake Linux v8 full install, Dell GX110 computer. 3Com905 network card. I found the same thing. I currently have a linux job, but I have to commute an hour. Luckily I love my job, and I work at home two days a week. Unfortunately there isn't much UNIX related jobs in the Worcester area. I've been working with UNIX since the early '90s and have always had to travel at least a half-hour to work. I think the future is bright though. More companies are moving out *towards* Worcester from Boston. And because the City recently changed the tax structure to be a little more business-friendly and the Little Dig making the city more accessable, there will likely be more companies moving offices in and around the city in the next couple of years. Of that doesn't help you now. Someone described me the other day as an "ad-hoc specialist," in that I don't specialise in anything, but I tend to learn what I need to do the job I need (or want) to do. What distro are you using? Recent distros have set up some interesting firewall rules... If you are using RedHat 7.1, their default server install for some unknown reason rejects all SYN packets which are the start of a connection, and will cause Netscape to display the error you quoted (actually, RedHat only rejects incoming SYN packets to the lower 1024 "privileged" ports). You can check firewall rules on most distros using ipchains -L -n You can otherwise ping the server, right? If not, it might be a networking issue - make sure the client can see the server :) Good luck! i am trying to set up a server using apache. at this point i do not want it to be connected to the internet so i am trying to use a second computer to log on with. here is what i have set up: 1. server ip=192.168.1.1 ( i am using the ip and by-passing name resolution at this point). i can ping 192.168.1.1 from the server as well as localhost. i can also get the default html page up. the only changes i have made to http.conf is: a. Listen *:80 b. After rerunning vmware-config.pl vmware ran again. However I think there may be a conflict between vmware and Oracle because my system locked up again when I started Oracle and then started vmware. Also I noticed your boot scripts are in /etc/init.d/ while mine are in /sbin/init.d/. What would account for this difference? If you don't have these modules in /lib/modules/your_kernel_rev/misc, then you'll need to rerun vmware-config.pl. Now, that should solve the problem of why they're not loading upon boot. Hi all, I have had vmware running on my system for a couple of weeks. Tonight when starting vmware my system locked up (no keyboard or mouse response) and I had to press the reset key. After bring the system up when I attempt to 'power on' vmware I get a message that says: Could not open /dev/vmnet0: No such device. How do I make this device available? After the reboot it was necessary to issue 'insmod vmmon'. Thanks, Mike

The following is a detailed analysis of the "Code Red" .ida worm that we reported on July 17th 2001. This analysis was performed by Ryan Permeh and Marc Maiffret of eEye Digital Security. Credits You can get a copy of this analysis, commented disassembly, full IDA database, and binary of worm from http://www.eeye.com/html/advisories/codered.zip Introduction ============ On Friday July 13th we received packet logs and information from 2 network administrators that were experiencing large amounts of attacks targeting the recent .ida vulnerability that eEye Digital Security discovered (http://www.eeye.com/html/Research/Advisories/AD20010618.html) on June 18, 2001. After reviewing the logs sent to us we determined that in fact someone had released a worm into the Internet that was spreading rapidly through IIS web servers. The full analysis of the .ida "Code Red" worm has provided numerous new details as to the functionality and method of propagation of this worm. For instance this worms purpose ultimately seems to be to perform a denial of service attack against www.whitehouse.gov. Also it has been found that only US English Windows NT/2000 systems will show the defaced ("Hacked by Chinese !") web page. We've designated this the .ida "Code Red" worm, because part of the worm is designed to deface web pages with the text "Hacked by Chinese" and also because code red mountain dew was the only thing that kept us awake all last night to be able to disassemble this exploit even further. Explanation =========== As stated earlier the .ida "Code Red" worm is spreading throughout IIS web servers on the Internet via the .ida buffer overflow attack that was published weeks ago. The following are the steps that the worm takes once it has infected a vulnerable web server. 1. Setup initial worm environment on infected system. 2. Setup a 100 threads of the worm 3. The first 99 threads are used to spread the worm (infect other web servers). -The worm spreads itself by creating a sequence of random IP addresses. However, the worm's randomization of IP addresses to attack is not all together random. In fact there seems to be a static seed that the worm uses when generating new IP addresses to try to attack. Therefore every computer infected by this worm is going to go through the same list of random IP addresses to try to infect. The "problem" with that is that the worm is going to end up reinfecting systems and also end up crossing traffic back and forth between hosts to end up creating a denial of service type affect because of the amount of data that will be transferred between all the IP addresses in the sequence of random IP addresses. The worm could have done truly random IP generation and that would have allowed it to infect a lot more systems a lot faster. We are not sure why that was not done but a friend of ours did pose an interesting idea... If the person who wrote this worm owned an IP address that was one of the first hundred or thousand etc... to be scanned then they could setup a sniffer and anytime and IP address tried to connect to port 80 on their IP address they would know that the IP address that connected to them was infected with the worm and they would therefore be able to create a list of the majority of systems that were infected by this worm. 4. The 100th thread checks to see if it is running on a English (US) Windows NT/2000 system. -If the infected system is found to be a English (US) system then the worm will proceed to deface the infected systems website. That means... the local web servers web page will be changed to a message that says Welcome to http://www.worm.com !, Hacked By Chinese!. This hacked web page message will stay "live" on the web server for 10 hours and then disappear and never appear again unless the infected system is re-infected by another host. -If the system is not a English (US) Windows NT/2000 system then the 100th worm thread is also used to infect other systems. 5. Each worm thread checks for c:\notworm -If the file c:\notworm is found, the worm goes dormant. -If the file is not found then each thread will continue to attempt to infect more systems. 6. Each worm thread will now check the infected computers time. -If the time is between 20:00 UTC and 23:59 UTC then the worm will proceed to use this thread to attack www.whitehouse.gov. The attack consists of the infected system sending 100k bytes of data to port 80 of www.whitehouse.gov therefore potentially performing a denial of service attack against www.whitehouse.gov. -If the time is below 20:00 UTC then this worm thread will try to find and infect new web servers. In testing we have calculated that the worm can attempt to infect roughly half a million IP addresses a day and that was a ruff estimate made from using a very slow network. As of writing this document (July 18 6:49pm) we have had reports from administrators that have been probed by over 12 thousand unique hosts. That basically means at least 12 thousand hosts have been infected by this worm. In testing we have seen that sometimes the worm does not execute correctly and will continue to spawn new threads until the infected machine crashes and has to be rebooted. We have not been able to isolate the cause of this behavior. Commentary ========== As we sat and watched this worm spread itself through the Internet we were somewhat dumbfounded as to the number of reported systems being infected. The main reason for that is that this worm is using a, what we thought to be, very well known vulnerability. A patch for this vulnerability has been available for over a month now and at the time of the release of the vulnerability many news agencies ran stories about it therefore trying to spread awareness. Even with all of that though there have still been, at the very least, 12 thousand web servers infected by this worm. So we once again encourage administrators to pay attention to security issues and patch their systems as soon as patches are available for holes. All of this research would not be available if we were not a Full Disclosure company and if the many people who helped us research this worm were against full disclosure. Although we did not release any exploit code for the .ida vulnerability, the computer underground still had no problem creating a devastating worm. In the past we have seen a much higher percentage of patched systems when example exploit code was provided. System administrators do not believe vulnerabilities exist without a public exploit, or until something like this worm happens forcing them to patch their systems. We feel that if the security community moves away from Full Disclosure more incidents like this will happen and everyone will be left in the dark as to what is going on. An example of why full disclosure is so important would be this worm itself. Chances are this worm would have not been discovered if we had not fully disclosed details about the .ida vulnerability, allowing Intrusion Detection System vendors to create signatures for the .ida buffer overflow attack. Because of the way that IIS performs logging (logging a request after processing it), servers hit with this worm will actually have no traces of information left in the IIS log files making tracking this worm (via IIS logs) virtually impossible. The first instances of _anyone_ learning anything useful about this worm was via Intrusion Detection Systems that had signatures based on our .ida vulnerability research which would not have been there if not for full disclosure. The computer underground continues to find vulnerabilities everyday. If full disclosure goes away, then the general security community is left in the dark, and therefore so are administrators. More and more we are seeing an increase in worms attacking the Internet. There have been about 2 or 3 worms in as many months. Worms force computer security to become a global issue. With the rise of the Internet, not only do you have to worry about securing your own systems, you must also be careful of your "neighbors" systems. For instance with this worm even if you have done everything right (installed the .ida patch etc...) your network connection could still be taken down because of the amount of data flooding you from all of the "other guys" who hadn't applied patches and were infected by this worm. It is important to not only maintain your own security but make sure that other people you come in contact with secure their sites. Only with global cooperation to maintain security will the threat of worms start disappear. We received information from "friends" that leads us to believe that this worm is actually a derivative of another worm which was written to exploit the first ever remote IIS buffer overflow (also discovered by eEye Digital Security), the .htr buffer overflow. From reports, the .htr worm had a much smaller infection base and seemed to go under the radar probably because the .htr vulnerability was/is very old. Deep Analysis ============= The following is a very detailed analysis of what the worm is doing at each step of its infection. It will be provided as both a assembly text dump and as a IDA (Interactive Disassembler) database file. We have chosen not distribute the worm code in this eMail as to not clog up your bandwidth anymore then we already are >:-] Note: We will use CODEREF comments in the analysis to reference where we are in the disassembled code so you can "follow along" with us. The tools that we used to perform this detailed analysis were: IDA (Interactive Disassembler) from www.datarescue.com. IDA is an advanced disassembler that made this analysis possible. MS VC++ debugging environment. We used this to monitor modified pieces of the worm as they interacted with IIS. Ryan's brain + Marc's brain + private eEye tools. No... you cant have any of those. We will be heavily referencing the disassembled worm code in the following analysis. In an attempt to make this easier to understand we have broken the functionality of the worm into 3 parts. The core worm functionality, the worm hack web page functionality and the attack www.whitehouse.gov functionality. Core worm functionality ----------------------- 1. Initial infection vector (i.e. host is vulnerable to the .ida attack and gets hit with this worm). The initial infection starts to take place when a web server, vulnerable to the .ida attack, is hit with a HTTP get request that contains the necessary code to exploit the .ida attack and uses this worm as its payload. The code at 0x7801CBD3 disassembles to: call ebx When EIP is overwritten with call ebx it then causes program flow to divert back to the stack. The code on the stack jumps into the worm code that's held in the body of the initial HTTP request. 2. Sets up some initial stack variables CODEREF: seg000:000001D6 WORM At this point we are executing the initial code of the worm. The first thing to happen is that the worm sets up a new stack for its own use. The new stack is 218h bytes, filled with CCh. The worm code then moves on to initialize its function jump table. The entire worm heavily uses an EBP stack based memory offset system. This means that all variables are referenced as EBP-X values. On our website we have a document called worm-ebp.txt that attempts to track stack usage throughout the course of the worm code. 3. Load functions (create the "jump table") CODEREF: seg000:00000203 DataSetup The first thing the worm code does is reference the data portion of the exploit code at EBP-198h. The worm then needs to setup its internal function jump table. A function jump table is a stack based table used to store function addresses. It allows the worm to generate the function addresses at run time (This makes the worm have a better chance of executing cleanly on more systems). The technique used by this worm is what is called an RVA (Relative Virtual Addresses) lookup. Basically this means that all functions, or specifically GetProcAddress, are found within IIS itself. For more details on RVA please consult any good PE (Portable Executable, the executable file format for Microsoft platforms) documentation, or read through the assembly code of this worm. In a nutshell, RVA techniques are used to get the address of GetProcAddress. GetProcAddress is then used to get the address of LoadLibraryA. Between these two functions all other functions that the worm may need can be easily found. The worm uses these two functions to load the following functions: >From kernel32.dll: GetSystemTime CreateThread CreateFileA Sleep GetSystemDefaultLangID VirtualProtect >From infocomm.dll: TcpSockSend >From WS2_32.dll: socket connect send recv closesocket Finally the worm stores the base address of w3svc.dll which it will later use to potentially deface the infected website. 4. Check the number of threads the worm has created. CODEREF: seg000:00000512 FUNC_LOAD_DONE Here the worm seems to perform a WriteClient (Part of the ISAPI Extension API), sending "GET" back to the attacking worm. This possibly could be a way of telling attacking worms that they have successfully infected a new host. Next the worm code will count the number of worm threads already in action. If the number of threads is 100 then control is shifted to the Worm hack web page functionality. If the number of threads is below 100 then the worm creates a new thread. Each new thread is an exact replica of the worm (Using the same code base). The worm now continues its path of execution. 6. Checks for the existence of c:\notworm CODEREF: seg000:0000079D DO_THE_WORK There seems to be a to be built in "lysine deficiency" (See Jurassic Park, or Caesar's paper on this at www.rootkit.com) A "lysine deficiency" is a built in check to keep malicious code from spreading further. In this case the "lysine deficiency" is a check for the existence of the file c:\notworm. If this file exists then the worm will become dormant. This means it will not attempt to make connections out to other IP addresses to try to infect. If this file does not exist then the worm continues onto the next step. 7. Check the infected systems time (computer clock) CODEREF: seg000:00000803 NOTWORM_NO The worm will now check the infected systems local time (in UTC). If the hour is greater then 20:00 UTC then the worm will proceed to goto the first step of the attack www.whitehouse.gov functionality. If the time is less than 20:00 UTC then the worm will attempt to continue to try to infect new systems. 8. Infect a new host (send .ida worm to a "random" IP address on port 80). At this point the worm will resend itself to any IP addresses which it can connect to port 80 on. It uses multiple send()'s so packet traffic may be broken up. On a successful completion of send, it closes the socket and goes to step 6... therefore repeating this loop infinitely. Worm hack webpage functionality ------------------------------- This functionality is called after a hundred threads are spawned within the worm. 1. Check if local system default language is English us then goto step 6 of core worm functionality. CODEREF: seg000:000005FE TOO_MANY_THREADS The first thing the worm does is get the local codepage. A codepage specifies the local operating system language (I.E. English (US), Chinese, German etc...). It then compares the local codepage against 0x409. 0x409 is the codepage for English (US) systems. If the infected system is an English (US) system then the worm will proceed to deface the local systems webpage. If the local codepage is not English (US) then this worm thread will goto step 6 of core worm functionality. 2. Sleep for 2 hours. CODEREF: seg000:00000636 IS_AMERICAN This worm thread now sleeps for 2 hours. We anticipate that this is to allow the other worm threads to attempt to spread the infection before making a presence known via defacing the infected systems webpage. 3. Attempt to modify infected systems webpages in memory. CODEREF: seg000:0000064F HACK_PAGE This worm uses an interesting technique called "hooking" to effectively deface (alter) an infected systems webpages. Hooking is modifying code in memory to point to code that the worm provides. In this case the worm is modifying w3svc.dll to change the normal operation of a function called TcpSockSend. TcpSockSend is what w3svc.dll (IIS core engine) uses to send information back to the client. By modifying this, the worm is able to change data being written back to clients who request web pages of an infected server. To perform hooking, first the worm makes the first 4000h bytes of w3svc.dll's memory writable. In a normal situation the memory for w3svc.dll (and basically all mapped dll's) is read-only. It uses the function VirtualProtect to change the memory of w3svc.dll to be writable, saving the old state to a stack variable. It then uses the saved codebase of w3svc.dll (from step 3 of core worm functionality) as a start point to search the import table (again see PE header documentation) for the address of TcpSockSend. Once the address for TcpSockSend is located the worm then replaces TcpSockSend's actual address with an address within the worm. The address that TcpSockSend now points to is a function within the worm that will return the "Hacked by Chinese !" webpage. The CODEREF for this function is seg000:00000C9A FAKE_TCPSOCKSEND. This thread of the worm now sleeps for 10 hours. During this 10 hours all web requests to the infected server will return the "Hacked by chinese !" webpage. After the 10 hours is up this thread will return w3svc.dll to its original state, including re-protecting memory. Execution after this proceeds to step 6 of the core worm functionality. Attack www.whitehouse.gov functionality --------------------------------------- Sooner or later every thread within the worm seems to shift its attacking focus to www.whitehouse.gov. 1. create socket and connect to www.whitehouse.gov on port 80 and send 100k byes of data CODEREF: seg000:000008AD WHITEHOUSE_SOCKET_SETUP Initially the worm will create a socket and connect to 198.137.240.91 (www.whitehouse.gov/www1.whitehouse.gov) on port 80. CODEREF: seg000:0000092F WHITEHOUSE_SOCKET_SEND If this connection is made then the worm will create a loop that performs 18000h single byte send()'s to www.whitehouse.gov. CODEREF: seg000:00000972 WHITEHOUSE_SLEEP_LOOP After 18000h send()'s the worm will sleep for about 4 and a half hours. It will then repeat the attack against www.whitehouse.gov (goto step one of Attack www.whitehouse.gov functionality). Appendix ======== This is associated information about the "Code Red" worm including how to stop the worm, commentary on the worm, and dispelling common misconceptions about this worm. How to secure your system from this .ida "Code Red" worm? --------------------------------------------------------- Microsoft patch for this .ida vulnerability http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/ bulletin/MS01-033.asp The worm spreads itself to new vulnerable systems via the .ida vulnerability. Applying this patch will keep your server from being infected. However, as stated earlier, because of the way the worm creates its list of "random" IP addresses to attack, you could still be affected by a high traffic overload denial of service. eEye Digital Security Advisory for .ida vulnerability http://www.eeye.com/html/Research/Advisories/AD20010618.html We initially discovered the .ida vulnerability which is being used by this worm as its infection vector. The above advisory details our research of that specific vulnerability. We worked with Microsoft to help them create a patch for the .ida vulnerability. SecureIIS - Application firewall, stops known and unknown IIS vulnerabilities. http://wwww.eeye.com/secureiis We do produce a product that protects IIS web servers from attack which is one of the reasons that we were so quick to research this worm. Funny enough in our initial testing we couldn't get the worm to work because we forgot we had SecureIIS enabled on the lab web server. heh. I have been infected by this worm what can I do? ------------------------------------------------ The first thing you must do is goto the Microsoft security site, as referenced above, and install the .ida patch ASAP. The worm will remain in memory until you reboot your server so make sure to reboot after installing the .ida patch. I think I am infected, how can I tell? -------------------------------------- An infected system will show an increase in load (processor/network). It will also show a number of external connections (or attempts) to port 80 of random IP addresses. You can see this by doing a "netstat -an" from a MS-DOS prompt. Either way do not take any chances... if your system is missing the .ida patch then install it ASAP and reboot. routing question

Hey guys, I add a route like this: route add -net 10.1.0.0/24 gw 66.92.74.135 And it shows up fine in my routing tables... But if the other machine looses it's link to the 10.1.0.* address, my machine tries to route those addresses to it's default route. I think the gateway sends some kind of "It's not here anymore" packet? That's not a big deal since it just gets dropped at my default gateway, but when the link to the 10.1.0.* address comes back up, my machine doesn't ever re-try to get to it through the 66.92.74.135 gateway... Is there a way to force a route so it always goes through the gateway? Even after it does fail? Thanks, -Marc

HI gang, After upgrading to a 2.4 kernel, I now see a mounted device thus: Filesystem 1k-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on shmfs 76220 0 76220 0% /dev/shm I can't find anything written that says what this is. HI Charlie et al, I completely blew away my modules directory and rebuilt my kernel to use uniprocessor (I never did like those canned kernels and canned modules - call me old fashioned but they generally cause me grief). Now, USB works like a champ! I've just printed several docs using CUPS and gimp-print - sweet! Bummer that this doesn't work under SMP...is this a known problem? I doubt my computer is *that* unique. I really would like my SMP back. :-) I did notice one thing - eth0 and usb-uhci are sharing an interrupt. The motherboard magically assigns this and I believe that I can't override it. I wonder if this is causing the problem in SMP mode. I guess I'll keep my eyes open for kernel rev 2.4.7. Hi Andy - Long time no see. 2 things: That kernel comes with EXT3 already integrated in the source. Once you have an ext3 kernel you can enable it by changing fstab. Disable it by changing fstab. It is my understanding that a crossover cable is needed when connecting two similar devices such as 2 switches or 2 routers. Maybe your cable modem has some builtin router functionality?! USB hangs system - requires reboot

HI gang, I just installed SuSE 7.2 Professional and upgraded to the 2.4.6 kernel (SMP). For the very first time, I'm attempting to enable the USB controller on my motherboard to talk to my Epson 870 printer (which has both parallel and USB interfaces). The onboard controller is an 82371AB. I looked and noticed the following kernel modules loaded: usbcore printer usb-uhci I think this is correct. I've enabled verbose debugging messages in the kernel. I looked at /var/log/messages, and it is detecting my printer. Also, I ran a program called usbview and saw the printer there as well. OK so far. I tried: cat some_file > /dev/usblp0 I get about 1 line of output and then my entire system hangs (it completely ignores any keyboard input, mouse movements don't cause cursor movement, and the machine is unaccessible from the network). I end up reaching for the reset button and waiting forever for my disks to fsck (yes, Tim K. I'm seriously considering Reiser fs). :-) I'm not sure I know how to go about debugging this...any suggestions? Oh, by the way, I did insure that there were no parallel port modules in place that might somehow interfere. I've seen some outages -- the recent thunderstorms put them off the air for over a day, but I'm not running anything mission critical. I really like the bandwidth. Their support is another matter. They rarely respond to email, and then after a couple of days. Their frontline support is clueless. They claimed one problem was because my email address was case sensitive. It wasn't (I tested), and when I informed them of that fact, their email communication stopped. They like you to call their phone line rather than use email, but the wait on the line is inexcusable. They claim that the wait is short, but I've never experience a short wait. Bill

Hi, I've had Charter for almost a year and have had no problems. Except my modem going last month.. that was the first real big problem. Like any ISP.. they have had a few outages here in Auburn, but they didn't last more than 2 hours. I had no problems getting my Linux (Mandrake)system working with it. Problem with network card

Hi guys, This message is not actually a Linux based question, but is still "nix". I have recently installed Solaris 8 (for Intel) on a PC at work and am having problems connecting to the network. I think that the problem is related to the speed that the NIC is trying to use when connected to the LAN. I also have a charter cable modem with a linksys router. However I set the router up to deliver dhcp addresses to roaming computers ie, my wife's laptop from work and the rest of my computers have static IPs. It saved me the hassle of setting up a dhcp server. For email I use KDE Mail and set it up to grab the mail directly from my isp's on demand. I have a charter cable modem, but I took the easy way out. I have a linksys firewall/router. I have static IPs behind the router. I have a single port (ssh) open, so I can connect while at work (like right now). I have two boxes running at home -- my linux box and a Win98 box. I have the linux box to myself, and my wife & 3 kids beat on the Win98 box. (Sometimes Win98 stays up for days at a time. :-) ) I have my email configured to use fetchmail to suck email directly from my charter email drop, and I read/compose it locally with pine. I'm slowly (oh so slowly) playing with DNS to supply services at home. Bill

I am new to the Mass. area, but I use to be a Sr. Network Admin with Charter Communications. The question that I have is are you using Charter@home or Charter Pipeline? If it is Charter@home then you have to make some different changes in your setup. You have to add some domain information. It took a while to finally Linux DHCP to with with Charter@home but we were able to figure it out. Familiar Linux help...

Hello all. I am FINALLY getting an iPaq and want to flash the ROM to install familar linux (or QT embedded). I've been looking over the howtos but I think I would feel better to have someone who's done this sitting over my shoulder so I don't make a $600 paperweight. Also, can someone tell me what apps are in ipkg format for familiar, I've been having trouble finding them? Probably a quick one, but neither google or I have sorted it out yet... I have a HP LH PRO with a AMI Megaraid controller in it. Connected to the controller are 2 4gig disks I've got configured to be mirrored using the hardware raid. (when doing the install you only see 1 4 gig disk) Now Mandrake 7.2 installs fine, and when using a boot floppy can see the controller etc... however when booting off of the controller, lilo comes up, it finds the kernel image and then stops at "unpacking the kernel..." I don't get any errors, it just hangs. I'll get to try it soon. I want to use a redirector and a web server on the same NIC of a single machine, and have them both use the default port (80). The Duron is by far the best price/performance platform right now. I just built a Duron 850 with an Asus A7V133 MB, 256MB SDRAM, 30 GB HD, ATI Radeon 64MB DDR, Plextor CD-RW 12-10-40, etc. for less than 800 sans monitor which I already own. You can save more if you buy the lower-end components. I also overclocked the font-side bus from 100MHz to 133MHz which really allows more bang for your buck. To do this you have to "unlock" the AMD CPU multiplier which is not hard, but you need some conductive ink to do this. new machine questions

Howdy all - I'd like to replace my computer (P100) with something newer and significantly faster (but nothing bleeding edge; I'm looking for good-value speed). I'm thinking up to 1GHz (P3?). I want 16/24b color and since I've been out of it awhile I don't know anything about card makers anymore (like what's good, compatible, etc.) or if the std these days is on-board video. I've used Linux for years and want something that will allow me to get/use a scanner (first time; SCSI or USB? recommendations?) and CD-RW (recommendations). I have magazines and documents I want to scan and store on tape or CD. But what's most important is that I be able to generate some sort of index so that I can search the scanned documents (like keywords or text). What do I need for that? Can someone recommend hardware/software for this purpose? I haven't been a 'PC expert' for many years (and don't want to become one again :->) and am therefore no longer up on the latest PC technologies by way of mb, bus speeds, what's a value and what's a waste of money. Can anyone recommend hardware and someone local that sells build to order machines (no brand-names or CompUSA types)? Connecting USB device

I am running SuSE 7.0 and would like to use the USB version of SanDisk ImageMate for transfering pictures from my digital camera. When I try to mount the device I get the following: mount usbdevfs mount: usbdevfs already mounted or /proc/bus/usb busy mount: according to mtab, usbdevfs is already mounted on /proc/bus/usb I have tried to RTFM and found quite a bit of info but do not know how to pull it all together in such a way to mount my drive and get the pictures off of the CompactCard. Someone's hammering....

I recently installed logcheck on my RH 7.0 systems and have been comforted and possibly entertained by how well it works. However this morning I started getting lengthy messages indicating what appears to be somebody trying to break in via a buffer overrun. I get this... Security Violations =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Jun 22 05:17:53 host SERVER[18075]: Dispatch_input: bad request line '..... followed by a lot of binary bytes ending in "/bin/sh" I've ad a couple "spurts" of this already today on two different systems; lasting about 2 minutes and then dissappearing. I'm guessing that whoever is trying this is [so far] being kept out, but I guess I'd like to know what is being hammered on as "SERVER" doesn't provide much help. Loki Games just released a Linux port of a game called "Mind Rover" Marc Hughes and myself have been having a lot of fun recently having our robots beat the crap out of each other. Hi All, i just wanted to thank you guys for the great responses. There were several ideas that we hadn't thought of yet. A question was asked whether we wanted to make an backup solution for a single machine or a whole network for an enterprise solution. Initially We were going to write it for a single system, but thoughts of backuping up a system remotely had come to mind. We will probably stick to a small scale for now (since we only have a test bed of a single machine), but hopefully, if we plan this right and write the APIs well, we'll be able to scale it. HI Brad, By "lack of sufficient backup programs", do you mean GPL programs? There are a few commercial offerings available such as BRU and Arkeia. Last I knew, Arkeia was available for free download for home use, but is not GPL software. OK, to answer your question about features that I like to see in a backup solution: o fits on a bootable floppy for disaster recovery o it would be nice if I didn't have to run through the whole tape to get one file restored. o GUI and command line (keeps everybody happy) o store a directory of files on the tape o sufficient error detection and corrections schemes to account for imperfect media o damaged media shouldn't prevent me from getting back the entire backup, just a file or two (unless of course the tape is shredded or something) o backup program does a read/verify to prove that the backup was really written correctly o ability to write backups to media other than tape, such as DVD-RAM or perhaps a hard disk partition That's just a few thoughts...perhaps they will stimulate some discussion. GNU utils on Solaris 8

Greetings. I'm once again picking up a project that I left off on now that Sun's site has updated the downloadble ISOs for Solaris 8 Intel to the 04/01 version. In the past I've gotten a decently customized install and had GCC and some other essentials loaded, but I can never seem to hunt down all the GNU utilities that I need. The one that comes to mind off the top of my head is 'ar', which is part of binutils, and I can't compile binutils as it needs 'ar'. I've scoured www.sunfreeware.com to no avail (though there is some great stuff on there that I always snag), nor is there a version on my system already. Any ideas? Brian J. There's a way around this, by putting a java applet on the webserver of the box you want ssh access to. Downside: it's GPL, and if you provide the applet, you have to provide the source. vim errors

Hi all, I'm having troubles with using vim over a telnet session. When i telnet into my machine and start up vim it sits there for while, until i hit ctl-c, then i get this error Error detected while processing /usr/local/share/vim/vimrc Interrupted Error detected while processing /net/fire/home/bnoyes/.vimrc: regular VI works fine. vim works if i ssh into the host. vim also works fine if i telnet into the machine from windows (using putty). but no luck if i telnet from a linux machines. (btw. The host is unixware, that's a problem in itself). Any ideas? Thanks, --Brad

Actually, this is a great thread. I've been in the market for a Linux-based PDA and am unsure how to proceed. Agenda's offer is right out because I want a color screen (for the gameboy emulator), and I really don't feel like waiting until October for Yopy, but I will if I have to. Should I go out and buy an iPaq, flash it, and install Linux? Or should I wait for Yopy, even though it doesn't use X. The Familiar distro is good. It can be found off www.handhelds.org , if you have not found that site already. As far as warnings, just be careful when flashing the bootloader. Make sure you follow the instructions exactly. Also, if you do install linux and attempt to re-install WinCE and happen to get any errors while flashing the device, don't turn it off. There used to be a bug, that probably has been fixed by now, where some of the sectors in the last 4MB were not erased properly by the bootloader thus could not be flashed. Most likely you will not run into this issue, but as a general rule if you experience errors while flashing the device, don't turn it off until you have fixed the problem. I'm inside a linksys firewall/router. I don't have an internal DNS server set up yet. I guess once I do I won't need the "-n" switch. (I've been playing with a DNS server config, but I haven't had the time to finish it up. It's a learning project.) Looking at the table above, and comparing it to one from work (running RedHat 6.0), I would think that the first entry should be something like: 192.168.1.10 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 UH 0 0 0 eth0 I'm running RedHat 7.0 at home. When I get something like those two lines I get rid of them and reenter what I then hope to be :-) a more syntactically correct route command and then check route -n to see if I got it right. The hanging is because it's trying to do a DNS lookup on 192.168.1.1. running it with the -n switch will fix that. Could you paste the output of route -n to us? I'd like to see what ip address millie.mills.cu is. And include the output of 'ifconfig eth0' just so we have a complete picture. ssh2 -> openssh

Tonight I tried (briefly) to convert to openssh from ssh2, and I ran into trouble. Maybe someone has an idea. The two machines in question are at RedHat 6.1 and RedHat 7.0. I built ssh2 (version 2.4.0) on each machine, and the install went smoothly on both sides. I have been happy with it. Then a friend suggested openssh. So I thought I'd try to convert. Since I could not find a ready-build openssl and openssh rpm for 6.1, I build openssh 2.9p1 and openssl 0l.6.6a. On my 7.0 box, I used the rpm's from the distro. I deinstalled the ssh2 code using "make install". I did not try to remove any other files, but I did stop all ssh2 processes. The install of the openssh code went just fine. I could log into my 7.0 box from my 6.1 box (I can't go the other way due to a company firewall), but the port mapping did not work. (I used the "-R 19999:box1:23" to give me access back through the company firewall.) I'm wondering if I'm running into basic code problems, or is it likely that the ssh2 installation needs some careful manual cleanup prior to decommission it. I'm back running ssh2, but I'd like to stick with open source, if possible. Suggestions? Thanks, Bill

DVD RAM

HI gang, I saw a note on SuSE's website advertising their upcoming release of version 7.2 In that press release, they boasted about supporting the new Panasonic DVD RAM drive (LF-D291), which supports writing 9.6 GB on a two sided medium. I know that reading a DVD is supported on recent (2.4.x) kernels, and also on some later 2.2.x kernels, and that patches exist for earlier 2.2.x kernels. (Data mode, like a giant CD...not DVD video). What I would like to know is: what is required of Linux to support writing a DVD RAM device. Do I need a program analogous to xcdroast? I have searched quite a bit and cannot find this tidbit of information. The WPI Linux Association received a donation of a SuperMicro SUPER P6DBE dual PII/PIII 440BX motherboard (http://www.supermicro.com/PRODUCT/MotherBoards/440BX/p6dbe.htm) The original owner upgraded because it was flaky and thought the parallel port was bad, but upon buying a new motherboard found that it was his fubared sound card causing flakiness, so I'm under the assumption that this motherboard should be good or at least workable, but of course there are NO GUARANTEES. As we currently have no use for it and I'd hate to see it go to waste, get back to me if you'd like it, but please only do so if you'll put it to good use, I'd hate to see something like this go to waste. My copy came in Wednesday :) Here's my first impressions: It's a typicall x.0 release, a bit too buggy. The install crashed on me, and I had to visit the borland website to get it working. It requires glibc 2.2 which my mandrake box didn't have, and let me point out an important fact that I didn't realize... a glibc 2.1 -> 2.2 upgrade is not a trivial thing. Oh... and it doesn't work with the newest version of the mySql client libs. I've known borland for a while, and I bet the first update for it is already being written. Now that's all the bad I have for it so far, on to the good. It is delphi! I sit and work on it, and except for the window decorations and weird mouse focus rules, it behaves exactly like delphi! On my 700mhz laptop it runs nice and zippy. The applications it produces are truly native linux apps. Their run time libraries came dual-licensed in both comercial and GPL format, so you can distribute them with your Free or non-Free apps. So here's my overall review: If they fix the bugs mentioned above, we will soon have a first class development environment. I would hope this would lead to more apps, and a more wide spread acceptance of linux. I'm guessing it's a Good Thing. I've got Win98, Win2K, and Linux Mandrake 8.0 all running happily on the same machine, so I'll throw my 2 cents into the discussion. As has been previously mentioned, if you're starting from scratch, just reformat EVERYTHING with the partitions needed for both OSes. In my case, I started out with a new harddrive to be installed so I formatted the new HD to be my Windows disk, involving (serveral) FAT32 partitions to be used for the Windows system and also to be used to easily transfer data back and forth between the Linux install and the Windows install. (Namely, MP3s... :) ) I also made a NTFS partition (or rather, left space for) to install 2K on - I chose this strategy because I needed some Win2K NTFS features (note that Windows 2K uses NTFS5.0 and Windows NT uses NTFS 4.<something> - there are differences). I did all this via Partition Magic rescue disks 'cause I like the GUI (and I like the fact that it formats the partitions for me so I can then copy all the existing Windows data via Linux (yeah, yeah, mkdosfs) - but this was a new HD install). The FIRST step is to install Windows 95/98/ME if you want to - if you're going with 2K, then just don't bother... the Win9x series assumes that it's the only OS and mucks with the MBR. It's much easier just to do it *first*. (In other words, if you're *ever* going to want to use Win9x decide to do it NOW because it'll be much harder later.) IMPORTANT NOTE: Win9x *MUST* be installed on the first harddrive (ie, on the master drive of the primary IDE controller). If it is not, it WILL NOT BOOT. Win2K *may* require this as well, but I'm pretty sure it can boot off pretty much anywhere (my install of 2K has it *way* past the 1024 cylinder on the master drive of my primary IDE controller, so don't worry about the 1024 cylinder boundary - Win9x MUST be on the first 1024 cylinders, I think). Next I installed Win2K. It'll see the existing Win9x install (if there is one) and set itself up to dual-boot between the two. It's bootloader is actually on the boot sector of the Windows partition, NOT the MBR. Which is good, because that means LILO/Grub/Whatever can boot it. Win2K made me reformat the existing NTFS(NT version) partition before it would install on it, but after that, it went on with no problems. Finally, I installed Mandrake. Mandrake saw my two Windows installs, added them to Grub (the bootloader I chose, feel free to use Lilo), and then installed flawlessly onto the newly ReiserFS partitioned secondary HD. Once a that was done, all I have to do is choose "Windows" from the Grub bootloader to boot into Windows (or rather, to launch the Windows 200 Boot Loader which boots wither Windows OR Win9x). As others have said, you probably either want a FAT32 partition to transfer data between the OSes, or just make the Win2K system partition FAT32 - it'll work fine that way (my Dad runs his computer with Win2K on a FAT32 partition, and it runs without any hitches). The one warning is that PM5.0 doesn't support the Win2K version of NTFS, so you won't be able to muck around with NTFS partitions with it. It also doesn't support ReiserFS, but I doubt anyone expected it to... (I believe that PM 6 DOES support the Win2K version of NTFS, though - and of course, it supports ext2 and Linux swap partitions (although PM5 can't move/resize Linux swap partitions - just delete 'em and recreate 'em if you ever need to move/resize them with PM - PM6 might, haven't borrowed my Dad's copy to find out)). I also believe that NTFS support is still labeled "experimental" and "read only" in the kernel setup, so you may want to use FAT32 anyway (too bad win2k doesn't run off of ResierFS, huh?). For partitioning, I use Mandrake, so I've got diskdrake; but since you've got Caldera you may want to download something called GNUPartD, it's another graphical partitioning tool, under GPL, that is a replacement of disk druid. Double Dial Out

I was wondering if anyone knows the fix to the double dial problem? Whenever I dial out from my RH 6.1 Linux box (using Linuxconf) the system dials, connects, hangs-up and display "The Command /sbin/ifup ppp0 is taking longer than expected to complete. Please take action" Then it automatically re-dials and successfully connects. I found this reported in several Usenet groups and archives since 1999 but I have not seen a resolution. I've never resized NTFS myself, but Mandrake (my distribution of choice) comes with an excellent utility as part of the install called DiskDrake, which is an open-source equivalent of Partition Magic, and I've found to be far preferable. Even if you don't want to use Mandrake, you could always boot it up and go through the install until you pass the partitioning section near the beginning. I believe DiskDrake can resize NTFS in Mandrake 8.0, but don't quote me on that. Either way, I like it a lot better than Partition Magic, and it's just as full-featured. Brian J. Linux on a Dell laptop dual-boot W2K

Hey all, I was wondering if anyone has had any "good" experiences installing Linux and W2K on the same machine? I currently have the following hardware setup: Dell Inspiron 8000 Laptop Pentium III 700mhz w/256MB RAM Toshiba DVD-ROM Integrated Actiontec 10/100MB NIC \ 56K Modem Intel® 815e AGPSet Chipset with 4X AGP 10GB HD - currently 1 partition NTFS file system My thoughts were to install Caldera e-Desktop 2.4 which I have had some success with. What I'm not sure about is re-partitioning the HD to accommodate 2 Operating Systems. Caldera comes with a slim version of Partition Magic, but I haven't had the opportunity to use it on NTFS, so that is where any suggestions would help. Thanks for the time. Matthew

SCSI Tape Drive Question

We have a kicking VA Linux 4450 server with a VXA-V17 tape drive in it. Unfortunatly the tape drive isn't seen by linux. It shows up in the scsi bios utilities. There is no mention of a tape drive in dmesg or /var/log/messages after bootup, and it doesn't work when you try something like "mt -f /dev/st0 status". The drive is on scsi channel B, does that make a difference? Is there some way to scan the scsi bus manually? I checked /proc/config.gz and tape drive support is built in. Any ideas, suggestions? -Marc

I have no problems booting win2k on my laptop through lilo. RedHat 7.1 saw it and happily added it to my lilo menu. "Couldn't find ext2 superblock..."

Using Darkstar Resque Disk to boot and look around a RH 6.2 installation. e2fsck -n /dev/hda1 results in Couldn't find ext2 superblock, trying backup blocks... e2fsck: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/hda1 Here are the questions: Can I fix the superblock? Or is it re-install time? Duplicate blocks are reported in hda12 (/) when I boot RH 6.2. Is it possible to fix that? RH6.2 boot in rescue mode from CD says fdisk unable to open hda but it is recognized by Darkstar Resque Disk. Unfortunately Darkstar only has partitions defined to hda9 and does not recognize hda12. Is it possible to rename a partition (hda12) to another name (hda5) from outside? I have a second system, Windows based, which allows me access to the internet for downloads, email, etc. Is there a way to download utilities on the Win machine and then execute them from a floppy on the Linux machine either booted into rescue mode from RH or from Darkstar floppy? XEmacs question - gnuserv/gnuclient

HI gang, I'm running XEmacs 21.1.8 and am playing with gnuserv/gnuclient. Within XEmacs, I do M-x gnuserv-start (which seems OK). In a terminal window on the same machine, I type gnuclient and another XEmacs window pops up quite quickly (as I expect). However, I can't get this to work from another machine on my home network. I played with the xauth stuff and also tried setting the GNU_SECURE environment variable to no avail. Clearly I've done something wrong but I don't know what. Can somebody walk me through the steps? I'm expecting that if I run gnuserv on machine 'tux' that I can set the security so that I can access that gnuserv process from machine 'andypc' by typing the correct incantation of the gnuclient command on 'andypc'. New WLUG website

HI everybody, The WLUG website has been moved to a new location. I'd like to thank Rob Bellville for hosting the WLUG website for us for the last 3.5 years! Hostname

Thanks for the help with realaudio. Now it is working fine. My next question concerns how the hostname is published. When I look at the DHCP clients table provided by my router software the windoze boxes have published their hostname correctly but my linux box has published an incorrrect name. When I look at /etc/HOSTNAME the name is 'zeus' however then name that shows up in the clients table is '80'. What am I missing? thx, --mike

RealPlayer and Linksys

I have configured several boxes at home behind a Linksys router #BEFSR81. Both my windoze and linux boxes are able to connect through the router however Realaudio only connects through the router successfully on my windoze box. On the linux box I have installed it successfully but cannot get get it to connect through the router. What should I be looking at in order to solve this? I tried looking at preferences and tried Auto-Configure to no avail. Unfortunately I do not know what RTSP or PNA is or how to use it. Any help will be greatly appreciated. thx, mike

Hi, I'm too clear on what you are looking for, so i'm guessing that you want to resize/move a partition. In that case, you may be interested in looking at gnu-parted. A free program that can resize/move partitions. It has a rough interface from what i remember, but it got the job done for me. If you are looking for an easy to use solution there is partition magic, which is a commercial product, that can resize partitions. It only runs on windows, but has the ability to manipulate ext2 filesystems. Shifting partitions?

A fast question: Anyone have experience with the stability of and general wisdom of shifting the Linux partition on a hard drive on a dual boot machine? I am trying to upgrade to a newer kernel and am presented with not enough memory on the Linux side of the drive. Encountered error message: <<An error occurred. Tour system has not enough space left for installation or upgrade (366821583>188726600)>> If the endeavor is too risky I can sacrifice the current Linux install, wipe the partition and install from scratch. Check out http://www.tru64unix.compaq.com/linux/documentation.htm It may be the X configuration settings. What monitor are you using? The MBR on many Compaq PCs point to a diagnostic partition that contains some basic utilities. I have my Armada 7400 set up for RH Linux and Windows. My MBR points to the Compaq diagnostic partition. I originally removed that partition without a problem. However, I later decided the diagnostics were worth 12/15 MBs. I used the Compaq diagnostic floppy (or download from their site) to create the diagnostic partition and load the diagnostics. Linux fdisk knows about the Compaq partition. well, it sounds to me like your monitor is the problem. It probably doesn't support the resolution you're trying to drive it at. Hit Crtl-Alt-F1, log in as root, type 'init 3', run the Xconfigurator (I think that's still in redhat 7) and pick a lower resolution and/or refresh rate. compaq deskpro

well here goes... i got an old compaq deskpro (yes, a stupid mistake... but it was cheap) and wanted to load red hat 7.0 on it and possibly use the deskpro as a intranet server so that i could learn how to set a server up. everything loads fine but when the system tries to go into x and give me a login screen, the monitor makes a poping sound and the screen goes blank. same thing with mandrake and caldera. the screen stays blank. i have gone into the bios and disabled pnp and energy saver but that does not help. i have been going through the faq's and the only thing i have found out is that compaq did some strange things around the mbr. i have no other options open to me and would appreciate any help anyone can give concerning this. thanks jim s.

newbie seeks help with kernel upgrade

Hi, and thank you in advance for your patience. This deals with upgrading kernel In attempting to install vmware 2.0 in Red Hat 6.2, I was notified that I needed an upgrade to RH6.2 kernel. While trying to install the kernel upgrade with rpm I received error messages: 1) failed dependencies: rpmlib(PayloadFilesHavePrefix) <= 4.0.1 is needed by kernel-2.2.19-6.2.1 2) mount < 2.10r conflicts with kernel-2.2... 3) nfs-utils < 0.3.1 conflicts with kernel-2.2... I understand that I can ignore the conflicts (2,3) by specifying --replacefiles in the rpm command. I decided to upgrade rpm assuming that rpmlib would be included. Using gnorpm I downloaded rpm 4.0-4 and received another error: only packages with major numbers <=3 are supported by this release of rpm. Presumably this message is issued by the currently version of rpm 3.0.4-0.48. This may be a red herring and not important as I continued. I used ncftp to download by specifying "mget rpm-*.rpm" and received four files rpm-4.0.2-6x.i386.rpm, also -build-, -devel-, -python- from RH site. When I tried to install rpm-4.0.2-6x I received an error: failed dependency libdb-3.1.so. Where can I find libdb? How could I determine that for myself if I run into another dependency? Do you have any suggestions/recommendations regarding updating kernel? I am using instructions retrieved from RH titled "Upgrading the Linus Kernel on Red Hat Linux systems" by Red Hat Support last updated 2000 May 17 -- Thank you, Dan Crooks

Hi everybody, This is a reminder about the upcoming WLUG meeting, to be held in Kinnicutt Hall (a.k.a the usual place) at WPI at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, May 16h. The topic for discussion will be the practical use of IPCHAINS. What does that mean? This meeting, Doug Waud and I will present to you ways to use IPCHAINS to implement a firewall. This is not theory, this is practice...what to type, what it does, and why. This talk will build on the more detailed information presented by Bob Ziegler at our last meeting. Doug will start with a presentation of the simpler case of getting a firewall up which supports masquerading (that is, getting multiple machines on your home network to share one IP address, as you would for cable modem, for example), e-mail, and browsing. I will follow up with more detailed examples of IPCHAINS code from my own firewall script for allowing certain services through the firewall to the home network. Although firewalling is a complex topic, we're hoping to distill out of that complexity enough information so that a person can get started toward implementing a secure firewall. Are you doing uni-directional NAT on the Linksys? Are there any firewall rules defined on the Linksys? In addition to allowing packets from outside to port 22 on your SSH server, do you allow outgoing packets from your SSH server on port 22 to local ephemeral ports (1024-65535) on the outside clients? Looks like the 10.254.1.2 is the gateway onto that segment of Ethernet, this would indicate that they do blocking at the router (at least to me and i'm not a network expert...) Bill, Try doing a traceroute on port 22 to your machine and see where along the line it get stopped. It's probably a default security thing they have setup, you could probably call up tech support and have them remove the blocks for specific ports... charter.net & ssh

I got my new Charter cable modem and Linksys router set up recently, but I find that Charter seems to be blocking inbound access. I've the the sshd running, and I set the router to pass port 22 to my linux box. I can even connect if I ssh outbound to the router DHCP address, so it looks like my end of the configuration is correct. Anybody experience anything like this? Do you think that Charter will allow incoming requests to my system? TIA, Bill
