Install fest with WPILA on Thursday!

Hi everybody, We will be having an install fest at WPI on Thursday, October 4th from 6 - 10 PM. I have several folks who have volunteered to make CDs and be installers - thanks gang! The main target of this install fest is the WPI community, but I won't turn away folks in need as long as there is room. I am, however, lacking in RSVPs from prospective installees. If you wish to have Linux installed on your machine, please send me an e-mail so that I can handle the logistics. Let's get the word out and hope for a great turnout! At least the really old ISA cards had jumpers so you *knew* which interrupt it wanted...the "new" ISA cards don't even have this, so you're doubly screwed. The systems both had ISA NICs. We eventually got one of them working (perhaps by accident). I finally swapped out the other one for a PCI NIC which worked almost immediately. I played with Coyote Linux on the old 486SX with 16 MB of memory after we had performed a memory upgrade and a proper CDROM drive installation. Coyote Linux appears to be a continuation of the work started by the Linux Router project. Its benefits are that it fits on a single floppy, appears to be more up to date than LRP, and is definitely easier to configure. After playing with the modem jumpers and after shutting off the motherboard COM ports, I was able to get Coyote Linux running, pinging the local network, and dialing the ISP on demand. In short, it was acting properly as a router for the other two Linux machines - yipee! Our host had quite a spread for us at lunchtime consisting of broccoli quiche, chips and hot sauce, soda, and more! My thanks to Neel and Ryan (from Holy Cross) for coming to help out, and to Warren (our host) for a great lunch and for asking for our help. I expect that we'll be taking another trip to Lancaster in about a month to install CUPS, perhaps SAMBA, configure two printers and a scanner, enable full access from all machines to those printers, to enable a packet filtering firewall on the 486, and to insure that everything else is in proper working order. HI everybody, Here is an update on the Lancaster, MA project which started yesterday. I showed up around 10:30 AM and two other fellows from Holy Cross came to join me. They left around 5 PM and I stayed until about 7 PM. We installed additional hard drive in two machines onto which we installed SuSE Linux. As mentioned, I'm bringing five 3-CD sets of Mandrake 8.1. Since Ximian for 8.0 was released a few weeks ago and Ximian isn't too fond of Mandrake, being a KDE-centric distribution, I really think it's a non-issue (but I figured I'd throw it out anyways). 8.1 includes Gnome 1.4.1, so at least it's up-to-date, if not as pretty. The details will depend upon the distro (I am familiar only with SuSE). Basically, when the beast boots the first thing it runs is a program init which is the mother of all programs. Init takes its clues from configuration files in the directory /etc/init.d where there are both files, like network the one we are interested in here, and directories named rc0.d through rc6.d. These subdirectories go with each runlevel. For example, when switching to runlevel 3, init is interested in rc3.d. If you look in rc3.d (try it!) you will see two set of files --- one set starts with K and other with S. These instruct init to run all the files with a K label and then all those with an S label. Thus the K's (kill) give init a clean slate and the S's (start) set up the new arrangement. For the case of shutting down and starting network stuff the K file will call the script network back up in /etc/init.d (remember there were files there) with the argument stop. On the other hand, if jumping to a runlevel where the network should be going, network will be called with the argument start. If you now go and look at the file /etc/init.d/network you will see a case selection with options start, stop, and others. Go take a look to get a feel for what is going on. Now, basically, what you want to do is add scripting to do what you have been doing manually. You can get the general idea by looking at the files already there to understand what is going on --- still the best way to start :-) ! Now, most distros do this all for you automatically through their configuration tools (like Yast --- yet another system tool --- in SuSE) and/or configuration files (SuSE has a master file /etc/rc.config where you and set parameters for a program SuSEconfig which then does all the dirty work behind the scenes). I do not know what distro you have nor if it were not SuSE would I be able to tell you what the configuration program is called (actually, I just remembered, I do know of one other --- Caldera has COAS). In any case, if you do not know what this general admin tool is for the distro you have, you can check the manual or, if that does not work, post to WLUG where I am sure someone will know about just about any distro out there :-) (I'll not be able to respond to this after today since I have to leave town tomorrow for a while.) Hey folks! After reading all those replies I took to crafting a message which answered the questions posed to me and went step-by-step through the processes I had done so far. After doing everything, lo-and-behold my NIC actually worked and I was able to get online with my DSL connection. I guess I must've mistyped something somewhere. So, it looks like it works ok now. I've got a CD burner, so if anyone has any images they want me to burn, I can churn out some CDs. I'm back in town by then so I'll show up. That way you can have someone to look after trivia like setting up the Tux cutout. I'll bring a few ethernet cables and a small hub since they turned out handy last time around. I'll also bring an extension cord or two since that also got used (until I pulled it out). (I thought about bringing a UPS but then I would just end up pulling out its power cord :-) I can bring my SuSE 7.2 disks in case anyone wants to go that way. Hey Andy, I used to work as a lab manager in Higgins for Sia, and if I remember correctly, the Discovery Classroom is the tiered lecture hall at the end of the second hall across from some of the ME Profs offices, and there is plenty of room and network drops in there for a pretty large group of installs. I think this is the classroom that laptops and docking stations were bought for... tho it's been a while, so I could be totally off. Hope this helps! WPI Install Fest

Hi Everybody, We will be having an install fest at WPI on Thursday evening, October 4th, from 6 PM to 10 PM in "the Discovery Classroom", aka Higgins Labs room 218. I am mainly aiming this at WPI students, but certainly anybody else who wants to get Linux installed is most welcome to join us. I don't know if I've seen this classroom...could somebody from WPI tell me how many computers we could reasonably accomodate in this room? This is just in case we get overwhelmed with folks requesting installations. I am seeking volunteers to do installations as well as folks who wish to get Linux installed fo the first time. I'll give preference to full installs, but if there are some folks who need to have some piece of Linux configured, we can do that on a space available basis. As in the past, I would like to suggest a $10 donation for installees. This will help to defray the cost of making CDs which you can take with you after the install fest. If you have your own Linux CDs, we'll do our best to get that version installed for you. If you are interested in attending, either as an installer, installee, or voyeur, please send me an e-mail. If so, you can break down the problem and exclude the DSL issue temporarily by connecting the two boxes (crossover cable if no hub, regular cables if you have a hub), assigning IP numbers in the 192.168.0.n range and seeing if they can ping each other. If they can, then you know the NIC card is up and running. (I guess this is a good example of a generic approach; indeed I was using it several times just last night helping a chap set up a local network.) One more thing comes to mind. When I was setting up my daughter's cable connection that particular cable modem required a crossover cable (!) between it and a router box I had. I discovered this by going to the cable modem manufacturer's site and reading manuals. This is a last resort I suspect. Lastly, my experience has been that the DSL/Cable people come in and want a Windows box to set things up and then, after they leave, you switch over to penguins. Am I correct in assuming that you did get something working originally over the DSL connection? doug

All my LRP installs have been with a cable modem and getting a network card to work, I haven't done anything with the PPP setup type stuff. What kind of modem are they going to be using? Hey folks... Ok, I have a beat up Compaq ProLinea 486/50MHz, 16MB RAM, 120MB hard drive, a D-Link 220 NIC and a spare IP addres from my DSL provider. I just installed a fresh Slackware 3.5 install of the "A" and "N" disks. My goal is to set it up as a webserver to host a few web pages I've been working on. Now, I've used Linux before, in my other computer using a Win98/RH6 dual boot system, so I've got a basic understanding of what's going on. However, I was using a modem to get online at that time and everything was all well and good for what I was doing. Now, I'm clueless about setting up this sh-tbox for what I want to do with it. Here are my questions: 1) Is it worth it/can it be done? (This would defintely affect the rest of the questions...) 2) How the hell do I set up my NIC for DSL? I have tried to setup my NIC per some FAQ's, O'Reilly's Running Linux (2nd Edition), Usenet posts and a lame HOWTO from my DSL provider. They all seem to advocate different steps which is confusing and doesn't seem to work.

coyote linux floppy distro

Another floppy distro one could use is Coyote Linux. It appears to have a more recent version of the kernel (2.2.19) than the versions of LRP I found(2.2.16). It is based on LRP and has easy install scripts that walk you through the disk creation. There is also a disk creation tool that will run on Windows. It might be worth checking out. FYI, both the Coyote and, I believe, LRP contain exploitable versions of ip_masq_irc, ip_masq_ftp, ip_masq_raudio. Linux Router Project is the way to go. You can get 'distros' for almost any thing. Check out lrp.c0wz.com, lrp.steinkuehler.net, www.linuxrouter.org. I use it and it's neat. No hard drive needed. Everything boots from a write-protected floppy. startup scripts & pid

I'm installing an ircd variant (ircd-hybrid-7) on a server at work. I didn't find an rpm for this newer version, so one of the people in my group built it. However, there is no startup script, so we'll have to cook one ourselves. I have a question about storing the pid in /var/run. Does one of the common functions in the functions script (/etc/rc.d/init.d/functions) handle storing the pid, or is that something that most daemons have built-in? I've found shell code for killing processes using the pid from /var/run, but nothing for storing the pid. Another question... Is there a decent template for writing our own script? I've seen this happen on a couple of occasions. A bad floppy will cause it. Try dd'ing to another floppy. make bzdisk

I downloaded the 2.4.9 kernel and built myself a new, up to date kernel, which works fine. I can run 'make bzdisk' and it dd's the kernel to the floppy. When I try to boot the floppy, I get loading ............................................... (lots of dots...) followed by these numbers; 0400 AX:0212 BX:7400 CX:5009 DX:0000 These repeat until I reboot with out the floppy. What's going on???? make bzdisk used to work, should I use another command to create a bootable floppy with the kernel? Thanks, Chuck

I found an HP Pavilion 5470 for $1500 at Circuit City. It was a return. It's only 1024x768, which is less than I want (although it is a 15" display), but with 256 MB, the price, and the combo CDRW/DVD drive, it looked awfully appealing. I have 14 days to decide whether to keep it (there's no restocking fee, since it was an open box). It has a non-Lucent lusemodem. The processor is an Athlon 4/1GHz, for what little that's worth; it's way, way cheaper than anything similar on Pricewatch. According to http://www.deater.net/john/PavilionN5430.html, it's possible to run Linux on it, albeit it uses a not very well supported Trident chipset, among other things. Is anyone familiar with this laptop? Unable to obtain an IP

I reinstalled Redhat 7.1 on my computer at school and I am unable to connect to the internet. I have only been using Linux for about 7-8 months and I am still a novice. When I was using Redhat 7.1 last spring, it worked fine. I am using a 3com Etherlink card (the driver is 3c905c-tx in windows) and my computer seems to detect it correctly. However, it is using the 3com59* driver. I tried to switch to the driver to 3com90*, but my computer stopped recognizing the card so I doubt it is a driver problem. (Plus, it was using the same driver last spring.) I also tried pump -i eth0 and it failed. Also, I entered an IP hoping that it would pick something up but that does not work either. Does anyone know what could be done to resolve the problem or at least direct me somewhere. Thanks, Eric

Ok, first off, repartitioning isn't really all that bad, at least in my experience... you just get a partition magic 4.0 or higher (for ext2, at least... I doubt even the latest version has support for the more esoteric filesystems... but you probably don't have to worry about that) boot disk, boot off of that, tell it to resize the partition, go out, see a movie with friends, and by the time you get back, hopefully it's done... I haven't tried any of the open-source Linux tools for that, but that doesn't mean they won't work just as well. As for the kernel images, well, I'm a fan of compiling your own kernel so you don't need any of them, but that isn't for everybody, I know, so yes, you can safely delete the uncompressed versions. And unless you have a multiprocessor machine, the smp kernels aren't doing you any good either. If you delete anything referred to in lilo.conf, make sure to re-run lilo (preferably taking that part out or pointing it somewhere else), or else you probably won't be able to boot. Beyond that, I'm not familiar with Redhat and their packaging system to say what kind of stuff you'd be able to safely delete without interfering with the upgrade process... intuitively, I'd say something non-essential that you're sure is going to be replaced anyway (kde and gnome come to mind), but again, don't listen to me; I don't know what I'm talking about. REMINDER: Meeting, Wed. Sept. 12th

HI everybody, This is a reminder about the upcoming WLUG meeting, to be held this Wednesday, Sept. 12th, at 7 PM in Kinnicutt Hall on the WPI campus. Directions can be found on the WLUG website. I would like to spend part of the meeting discussing a potential group project. I was contacted by Warren Rasmussen, the Director of the Lancaster (MA) Center for the Aging. He would like to convert several of his office computers from Windoze to Linux, with shared printers, network, shared dialup modem, etc. Warren would also like us to entertain the notion of the creation of a few Linux workstations to be used by senior citizens for e-mail and web surfing, again, using Linux. Some training of the seniors would be required. He'd like to see if we can prove that Linux is easy enough for seniors to use. I have invited Warren to the meeting, so we can get more details from him at that time, and then gauge the interest level of the group in participating in this project. Since the WPI school year has just started, I would like to take the opportunity to introduce any WPI Linux Association officers who might be in attendance. I also plan to open the floor for tech support questions aimed at the group membership. I may still have an item or two that I can bring for a raffle. Afterwards, we'll adjourn to the Boynton Restaurant for some pizza and beer, and all are welcome to attend. boot images -- safe to delete?

I tried to upgrade to RedHat 7.1 tonight, and I found that I do not have enough disk space on /. So I have 3 options: 1. Fresh install 2. Repartition 3. Clean up As much as I'd like to repartition, I'm not sure enough of myself to plow into that, although I'd like to hear what tricks there might be that would make it easy (easier?) to do. One thing I've noticed is that I seem to have extra kernels around, but I thought I'd see if there is any reason I need to keep them before I whack them. Also if you don't like something in application you can change it and re-compile (handhelds.org has a cross compiler to compile apps for the strong-arm processor). installing linux on the ipaq, can be kind of tense, so if you do decided to install make sure you read the instructions thoroughly first. --brad

RHL 7.1 upgrade: Xterm bizarre, etc

Although *installing* linux from RedHat disks has improved over the years, I still find that upgrading an existing installation can really try your patience. After doing a number of clean installs using the RedHat 7.1 disks, I felt comfortable thinking I could upgrade without much problem. Wrongo. There are a number of things that changed. Some I had know about from the previous clean installs. Others came as a distressing surprize: for instance the sendmail upgrade changes default behavior radically in that it is compiled against the tcpwrappers library, so now you need to consider sendmail entries in your hosts.allow and hosts.deny. Actually, that's a great idea, but I sure wish I knew that before hand (rather than bouncing mail for 2 days until I discovered the problem.) Anyway, I could go on detailing some of these fascinating experiences, but I'll get to the point: my xterm seems to be bizarre when running on the local xserver. I usually don't run xdm (runlevel 5 default in RedHat) but just do a startx. When I do that everything seems pretty OK until I actually try to *do* something. I click on the Netscape icon in the panel on the bottom of the screen. Nothing. I launch an xterm to try to figure out what's happening (or not, in this case) and it just gets worse: the keys don't seem to be matched up to the correct characters. When I press the 'o' key, I get a 'p' on the screen. When I press 'i', I get 'o'. In general it seems like the whole keyboard is just slid over by 1 key -- but I can't seem to find a key that gives me an return or enter. As you can imagine this is annoying. I use Hummingbird Xceed on a windoze machine and the Xterm there running from the linux machine seems to be problem free. (Actually, that's how I usually "use" my linux machine -- I very rarely sit down in front of it.) When I do sit in front of it and use a plain tty, it's fine that way too. (don't think for a second that this should be obvious. i've seen worse.) when you're this far, THEN see if you can ping the other system from each box.... for that matter, try pinging localhost, too. if a system can't ping localhost, then it's got Bigger Issues... 8( don't worry about SAMBA unless you're trying to make the Linux boxen available to a WinDOZE box. I am not sure what scripts Mandrake put in place to share your network, but if you haven't checked the ipchains/iptables rule sets, do so. It is possible that a rule set could prevent you from logging on via pppd and block ports necessary for communication with the printer. The commands below will clear out the rule sets(enter as root), but will leave you system open. I would not suggest staying online long without a good working rule set. service ipchains stop service iptables stop use the appropriate line (I believe Mandrake 7.2 uses ipchains by default) or try both. -Ben

You can't ping the jetdirect box if it's TCP/IP network settings aren't set or are wrong for your network. I can logon properly with the silly Windows dialer, but as there is no terminal or dialog window I have no idea how it is "properly" addressing things. The dialup worked on Linux until I went fiddling elsewhere in the Mandrake Config program. (Sharing an internet connection) Although I changed the settings back (to the best of my recollection anyway) still no dice. Any insights by anyone (other than the obvious one of my inexperience being the root of most of the problems) are valued like gold. Colin

Thoughts from wisened pros? Now more than ever I need to migrate to Linux. I am using a dual boot system MS/Linux and I desperately want to cut the cord. Previously the difficulty was an inability to print. Newest guess on that is that there is a possible conflict with lpd and CUPS running at the same time? I have yet to unpack how one goes about fixing that. Most recent challenge was to get a network connection established between two machines on 3Com cards on a 3Com box. Didn't quite get my hands around that, though many different angles were tried. Current thinking on this one is to look around and see if SAMBA might let me configure things. And then I really messed things up. While trying to establish a network I saw this neat option that lets machines share an internet connection, and I pursued it.... After playing around for a while I disabled it and now the Internet connection will not properly execute the ppp. I can manually get all the way through the logon in a Terminal session and when I get to: Entering PPP Session IP address is 216.164.248.83 MTU is 1500 There is nowhere to go from here. Leave it alone and it disconnects. Try to do anything, any key, and gobbledygook shows up killing any prospect of a PPP session completing. Possible that the system "enabling IPv4 packet forwarding" on startup is some leftover from my messing around with sharing an internet connection? No idea on that one. All right. It is necessary to screw around and make mistakes to learn. I am excelling at that, and probably do now know more. The difficulty is that I have never seen this up and working anywhere before, and when trying to solve a problem I am working without an image in my head of what is or isn't supposed to be there. Thought to reload the Mandrake 7.2 system and hope to wipe the settings I created return to where I was originally pursuing different paths. Trick there is that "Reload" keeps all the settings. Shouldah done a reinstall. Learned that too. Any thoughts, or maybe even just a weak hearted consoling word or two. This is weird. I have KOffice 1.1 (rc1) installed, KDE 2.2, CUPS 1.1.9, and XFree86 4.1.0 (SuSE 7.2 PRO). I've also noticed that freetype is installed on my machine (freetype2 v2.0.1 and freetype 1.3.1). I don't appear to be running a font server (at least not xfs or xfstt). My video card is a Matrix G400. I ran the SuSE supplied script for fetching the ttfs and installing them. The script is called fetchmsttfonts and it is contained in SuSE's xf86-tools package. It looks to be pretty distribution neutral. I think the only other thing that I did was to add the font path so that the X server could find the fonts. I created a quick doc in KOffice with three different ttfs and printed it no sweat. I got the fonts from the evil empire's website. Anti aliasing is definitely enabled in the KDE control panel (Look and Feel -> Fonts). I do notice that kmail files don't print directly from kmail. (The pstoraster process from CUPS runs seemingly forever and I'm not sure why). How many true type fonts to you have loaded up? I only have 11 that KOffice can see. I'm not sure what else to check. Does anybody else have any ideas? I'm trying CUPS 1.1.10 now to see if that solve the kmail printing problem. Andy, The desktop has got 128mb ram (pc100), my laptop has got 196mb. I think that is the problem with the load times when AA is turned on, because it doesn't seem to affect my laptop at all. It's the font problem that irks me. I've figured out that it is tied to AA, with it turned off the fonts don't show up on my desktop either. HI Wes, How much memory do you have in this machine? I've seen KDE take forever when it is memory limited, hence my question. Also, are you running anything which is CPU intensive when you're trying to start KDE? I am also running KDE 2.2, and I downloaded those MS truetype fonts using the script supplied by SuSE 7.2. I like the look! Although I haven't tried anything funky like Greek or Hebrew, what I have tried seems to work pretty well. However, I have infinite memory (256 MB), and my processor is dual PIII/450. I did try printing a mail message directly from KMail, but that didn't work for some reason (not sure if the problem was KDE or CUPS). File...SaveAs and then print did work. kde22 problems...

Well, I've finally gotten kde 2.2 installed and I love the new libkdeprint. I'm a pastor by trade and have been stuck in windows because I need some pretty funky Greek and Hebrew fonts for my weekly research; fonts which I can only find in .ttf format and couldn't be printed at any rate (yes, I know there were fixes, I never got one to work for me). Now with kde 2.2 I can at last use these fonts in Linux, with one major glitche... 1) They only show up in my "usable fonts" combo box in koffice when anti-aliasing is turned on. This would not be a problem except for the fact that... a) My pitifully Celeron 366 take FOREVER to load kde programs with anti-aliasing turned on (ever waited 30 seconds for a shell to open up, it's not fun...) b) My laptop's display isn't supported by kde's anti-aliasing yet (Inspiron 3800). So my primary research tool can't be used. Any ideas/workarounds/hacks to overcome this glitch? Has anyone had any experience with Satellite two way DSL? I can't get DSL through Verizon and our ATT Broadband doesn't have any plans to add a cable modem. Dish Network has two way for $60 a month and $550 initial hardware. They are talking of 550 kbs for download and 110 kbs for upload speeds. Get your own line I mention 1 & 2 because two friends recently moved from Worcester to surrounding towns and one of the unsolicited comments was regarding better connectivity... The other story is that two other friends have very different stories to tell based on where they live in Worcester - one friend lives near UMass, the other over near Quinsig. Admittedly, this is anecdotal, but what the hell. It also sounds like you may be tied to WPI, so... Lost service for a week in July due to a claimed router malfunction in Newark (took out most of Northeast for them) and the Code Red virus took all their end-user Cisco routers out for over a week before Cisco came up with a patch. They only guarantee 80% of the bandwidth you buy, and I don't ever seem to get more than that. They do get things fixed and they're big enough to be around a while. On the other hand I've got 5 static IPs from them at each location. Currently running fine. Put the office on Galaxy/Rhythms 768/384 line sharing. Complained about the speed, was only getting 620. They were genuinely concerned, tweaked the line, and left me with 1mbps. Reliability excellent. Unfortunately while on vacation 3 weeks ago I read in the Wall Street Journal that they were shutting down in 30 days (Rhythms Chapter 11). Have an order in for Speakeasy 384SDSL for the office, expect to go live with it on Sept 6th (3 weeks, a record). Speakeasy's online order status system is incredible. They use Covad. To set the record straight, Covad has filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy, but claims it will not affect the operation of their DSL network. We'll see. I've never had a provider blame Verizon for anything. Only time they were to blame, some poor Verizon voice guy disconnected the line to my home DSL. I called Qwest and there was a Verizon guy there 9am the next morning (Saturday, pouring rain) to fix it. So I guess I'm on my ninth install now. There aren't a lot of good choices left. All I know is I won't put all my eggs in any one basket again. anyone happy with DSL in Worcester?

Hi all - I'm new to the area.. living near the WPI campus. Is anyone here happy with their DSL service? Right now I've got DSL service from Earthlink. Man, they suck. The thing goes out for a week at a time & all they do is ask me to power cycle my modem & then say its a Verizon problem & I must wait for Verizon to fix it. This time I'm getting 400ms pings & terrible bandwidth (50kbps... and not as smooth as a modem) Anyone know if going with a different DSL provider would improve things? I'm not sure who Earthlink uses locally, but they always say its a Verizon problem. Speakeasy uses Covad. Perhaps I should switch? Thank you - Matt

Scott, Thanks for the info. The VPN I needed to connect to was pptp. When I downloaded the pptp-linux client for this project, I was told that I needed to make a new module for ppp-mppe-2.4.0 because it did not recognize my 2.4 kernel. This was not as straight forward as I hoped and time was running out... The people at the other end who I was dealing with only know windows (sometimes I think that is all I know as well) so to make a long story longer I ended up using PC Anywhere through my windows box. Is pptp-linux compatable with PC Anywhere? I do intend to play around with pptp-linux when I get some free time and with any luck get rid of WinNT. You will need the client software for whatever technology the VPN uses. You've got choices ranging from IPsec (the linux client is called FreeS/WAN) to pptp (with a sick hack of a linux client that I maintain) with a bunch of other choices in between. Find out what the VPN is based on and then do a google for that and linux. You're half-right: the SetOutputHandler option is apparently for Apache 2.0 and most people should still be using Apache 1.3. However, SSI (what .shtml files are) should still work with Apache 1.3. The relative configuration lines are: Options +Includes In the <Directory> block, and: AddType text/html .shtml AddHandler server-parsed .shtml Either also in the directory block or with the rest of the add type/handler statements. The box should already be semi setup to use an address between 192.168.1.101-105, or something like that. I don't remember exactly what I used and I'm not at home to check. The LANCE part is the ethernet chip, eth0 is the interface you need to use to access the net. Do you have any errors in the log file when you run dhcpd on the box? It might need to have some stuff put into /etc/dhcpd.conf to get it working right. I can check this at home if need be. And if need be, I can rip a copy of RH 6.1 for Sparc and bring it to the next meeting for those who'd like to get packages for it. John

Right. eth0 is a network interface, not a device, so there is no /dev/ entry. If you're just trying to test the interface, you can also just assign it an IP by hand by doing "ifconfig eth0 192.168.blah.blah". You might also need some -netmask goodness, but I'm not sure. "man ifconfig" has the goods. Then once that works, I'd start getting into DHCP. I'm a little paranoid with DHCP... at work I use dhcpcd because pump doesn't work. Well, I might be a little out of touch with my old-fashioned Slackware ways, but I don't think there's supposed to be a /dev/eth0. DHCP must not be working if it's not showing up in ifconfig, but try ifconfig eth0 to see if the interface exists. You can always try running dhcpcd manually, too. gettin' the Sparc Classic on the network...

Hello all, Settin' up the box I won at the last WLUG meeting. I wanna get it on the network here at work. When I watch the boot messages, I see "eth0 LANCE <mac address>" and "eth0 using auto-carrier-detection", but i don't see an entry for /dev/eth0 when i look there. I can ping the local loopback, but when I try to use DHCP in linuxconf to let it grab an address, but in ifconfig, i still only see the entry for the local loopback. stat syscall in RH7.1

Hi Fellas I'm trying to get a shared library to work with my red hat 7.1 system. The problem is; when the library makes a system call to stat() i get "<./myprog> error while loading shared libraries: <mylib.so>: undefined symbol: stat". I have tried this on other distro's (debian, namely), and it was able to make the syscall just fine. Any ideas? Here's some info that you may find helpful: i compile with these lines: gcc -g -fPIC -c -g <mylib>.c -o <mylib>.o ld -shared -soname <mylib>.so.0 -o <mylib>.so.0.0.0 -lc <mylib>.o gcc -g <myprog>.o -o <myprog> -L. -l<mylib> ldd <myprog> <mylib>.so.0 => ./<mylib>.so.0 (0x40018000) libc.so.6 => /lib/i686/libc.so.6 (0x4002d000) /lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x40000000) gcc --version 2.96 Thanks for any sugesstions, --Brad

I sent my reply, not because I care strongly one way or the other, but because I didn't want the subject to be too one-sided (since the original message was so strong). There are two very legitimate sides to the debate. I once participated in a list which banned any form of quoting. They had a well considered rationale which included: 1) Replies would be more considered when the writer had to restate the item being replied to. 2) Elimintated over-quoting and other lazy, off-hand replies. 3) Slows the pace of exchange just enough for reasonable reflection, retarding the heated build up of flames. Worked quite well. Would not be popular today.

Linux Sparc Boxes - freebie and selling

Guys, I've got some Sparc Classics with RH 6.1 pre-installed. Mostly they have 1-2gb disks with 32-64mb of RAM, builtin ethernet, SCSI, video. I've also got keyboards and mice to go with each one. I'd like to get rid of these from the garage finally. So I'll be raffling off one tonight at the meeting, and I'll bring others for those who want to pay $40 one. I think I have 8 for sale, maybe more, maybe less. I'll give you money back if it doesn't work out of the box. These suckers make nice home servers, and it's easy to addon extra storage, etc. They all worked just fine when booted and installed over the network not too long ago. The "GENERIC" manufacturer scares me a bit... Though on the same vein, I saw that Short-circuit city is selling "Centon" 256MB PC100 ram for 44.99 after rebate. Once again, I'm not sure if Centon is any better than GENERIC. Though for 120 bucks I could have 2gig of ram in my machine (provided my motherboard would support more than 128mb per slot)! Hmmm... now I just need a server motherboard that has like 12 memory slots!!! (kneeds hands together thinking about having to turn on BIGMEM stuff in kernel :-P) I went looking on http://www.thechipmerchant.com/19633-0.html (which I've had great luck with buying stuff) and it looks like there selling something comparable for 50.00 bucks... however they gave specific chipsets it would work with. Hard to correct the source of an error message you don't understand, and can't find elsewhere. During a Network Install of Mandrake Linux 7.2 I get: "SIOCSIFFLAGS Device or resource busy" The only option is to click "ok" or "next", both of which result in a hang you can CTRL-ALT-DEL out of. What does this mean? Also is this at all tied to the computer requesting a Default Gateway IP and Nameserver? I personally doubt it, but I ask in that I have been trying to establish if the gateway is the IP# for the my ISP through the modem on the other machine (The machine gives me default values that are just as poorly recieved.) Sometimes you feel like a dang fool. Compatibility woes for the unlearned. Should'a had a list of "good cards" when I went to buy one. In my youthful exuberance I went out and bought a 3Com card figuring that it would have a great likelihood of driver/module compatibility. I was half right. Lots of 3Com cards are. I am now staring at a: 3Com Fast Ethernet PCI NIC 3CSOHO100-TX Guess what doesn't appear to be supported with drivers or module #'s for Linux? Feel free to show me up by pointing to where to look, as my searches have yielded nothing. 3Com is useless on this point. Progress! After a number of failed attempts (what are the odds of 2 toasted 3.5" floppies in a row?) I have produced a network.img for Mandrake, and the network boot believes that it detects the card and can identify it through an exisiting module 3c59x, despite the card not being on anybody's list. Now onto the sticky part. Getting the network connection between the two computers on line to transfer the distro. This is the hard part due to vast inexperience, and the knowledge is also why I am trying in the first place. Thank you all for the moral support. I need it. Speaking o' which.... I have 4 2.4 gig scsi drives in enclosures. Most have centronix connectors. I have some cables too. They are about to be donated to goodwill, but I will hold them till this month's meeting if someone wants them. Wes's suggestion is excellent. If you can, lay your hands on a small router like a Cisco 2600 and learn IOS. Configure up your network in different ways to learn networking fundamentals - set up a class A, Class B, and Class C network, then do it using variable length subnet masks, etc. Set up a VPN, play with DHCP, RIP, and OSPF (if you can), and firwalls - 90 percent of security management is network administration. Download network and systems management tools. Many that are not free have 30 to 60 day timebomed versions that are full-featured. Get to know sniffers, SNMP managers, anything, everything. On the linux side check out snoop, openNMS, UCD SNMP, and others. if you have a Sun or NT box, you can download an evaluation copy of HP OpenView Network Node Manager - all the OpenView documentation is online and you can learn a lot from reading docs even without the software. Other vendors offer white papers that explain a lot of fundamentals - you can probalbly spend days at cisco.com, for example. Subscribe (for free) to the trade rags like Internet week, Network World, etc., and/or surf those sites for archived articles - many puplish articles explaining fundamentals. One of the most educational experiences for me (other than installing and networking linux boxes) was getting cracked. Seriously - you can learn a heck of a lot about network administration by understanding all it takes to install and configure an IRC chat bot on the sly - more than commercial experience imho. After taking out the parts that I need for my zippy new Athlon and donating most of the computer to my employer, I will have the following left over. It's kind of cheap, but one thing you could do if you don't mind opening your case is toss the hard drive in your existing computer, install/copy the files onto it, and then put it back in the other computer. Failing that, I don't know how Mandrake manages the actual install, but you'll want to edit your /etc/exports file (I forget the exact syntax, but as I recall, it isn't too hard to figure out from the man pages) to include the directory with the sources in it. For security purposes, it's best to share it read-only, especially with NFS. Network Install

I freely confess my inexperience. I have done a number of successful CDROM installs from Mandrake 6.1-7.1-7.2. I have an old box I scrounged but without a servicable CDROM drive. I want to install Linux on it, but need to do a Network Install. I am not finding detailed documentation on this and will continue to hunt. Problem with X

Hi All, I have XFree36 3.x installed and can use startx to launch icewm. When I install KDE2 and run startx it crashes with the following (paraphrased) message: ksmserver: Error in loading shared library libGL.so.1 ksplash: Error in loading shared library libGL.so.1 kdeinit: Error in loading shared library libGL.so.1 knotify: Error in loading shared library libGL.so.1 grep /root/.kde2/.root_warning file not found. I tried 'startx icewm' with the same results As soon as I uninstall KDE2 startx works again. Why would startx be broken even if I am not starting KDE2. Thanks, Mike

You really need the serial. The reason is that you have to download the kernel and the root filesystem image to the bootloader which sticks them in flash. The bootloader doesn't know how to speak USB. Scott

Hi Wesley, I installed QTe on my ipaq a few weeks ago. I does in fact, have a spread sheet. I haven't really used it that much, but its there. You might be able to get an idea on how it looks and feels if you try to set up QTe for your PC before you actually install it (http://qpe.sourceforge.net/x86.html) I think QTe is great for my ipaq. There are few things missing, for example i can't figure out how to get the databook to remind me of appointments. Mike, When I bought my current box I was still stuck in Windows, so I do not know how Linux friendly they are, but in Shrewsbury there is a company named Elkco on Rt. 9 over by the Shrewsbury Village end of town that custom crafts computers. I had very good luck with them and fairly good support after the fact. My old man bought a mess of computers from them for a school and they built them all to spec and they all worked fine. It looks like I'm finally going to have time to go out and pick up a serial cable so I can get brother Bill off of my iPAQ. But I've got a question for anyone who has done this ahead of me: Are there any speadsheets that have either been created for familiar linux or Embedded QT? The QTpalmtop web site has got some screen shots, and one has a link to a spreadsheet, but they don't mention it and I can't find the package anywhere. Unfortuately, I've got to have a spreadsheet so I can keep track of hours and expenses and such, so I'm kinda stuck, maybe I shoulda gotten a vr3? Also, are there any utilities out there that would allow me to do irsync with palms?

I'll grab the name later, but there is a place on route 30 in Westborough that will build a PC to spec and put whatever distro you want on it. They're primarily a windows office, but when I asked about Linux they said, "Sure, we've been getting more and more requests for Linux lately and we'll put whatever you want on it!" This makes me happy. Like I said, I'll get the name/number later, but take rt 30 from 9 into town and you can't miss it on your left (about 100 yards before the traffic circle). If you want to learn network-related services (DHCP, DNS, NIS, Sendmail, etc,) that's more of a System Administrator role. Network Admininistrator implies the focus is on the network (TCP/IP, routing, VLANs, Spanning Tree, etc.) Some folks (myself included) do pieces of both. If you want to be a network-centric admin, I would probably start looking at networking textbooks and possibly work towards becoming a CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Admin.) I have been working as a Unix Sys Admin for Accenture (formerly Andersen Consulting) for the last few months, although I have been with the company for 3 years. I agree with what Gary said and additionally would add getting your foot in the door working at a helpdesk somewhere. I know from experience that most tech companies will look within before hiring from the outside to fill positions. After that you can either build up your network with more hardware or take mid-to-senior level classes. Last night when attempting to upgrade to XFree86 4.1 I somehow f**ked up my configuration and can now only run X as root and I don't know what changed to cause that to happen. I had backed up my entire partition so the original configuration files are around but I am not sure which files I should restore to get back to my original configuration. I am contemplating upgrading to SuSE 7.2 with the 2.4.x kernel and reformatting my partition to be a Rieserfs file system. Secure Modems (A little off topic)

Well, XFree86 4.1 is out, which is what I was referring to, but as far as I know, that's a really well-supported video card (the chipset's been around forever)... what kernel are you running? Is it a stock Suse kernel? Do you know how to compile your own, if it might help? I saw on the suse website where there is an updated version of XFree86 (4.0.2) as well as an updated xloader and xmodules packages. I will be installing these and see if this solves the problem. I've seen this kind of thing happen for 2 reasons I've been able to figure out on my systems... after running XFree86 4 for a few minutes with my Diamond (since taken over by S3, now SonicBlue... it's so hard to keep track) Stealth III S540 (based on the Savage 4 or 4+, I think), the system will lock up hard... 3.3.6 was no problem, and I haven't tried the latest version of X, which is now supposed to have special drivers for that chipset, and it tends to happen much more often than once every few days, but since I know nothing about your system, I thought I'd mention it... The other thing that seems to cause it is a lot of hard disk activity on an Intel PIIX3 controller (for an old Pentium/166). Copying large files to/from a Reiserfs partition with DMA enabled seems to really do the trick (I should probably send in a kernel bug report, really)... but that's another possibility, I guess. System crash

Hi all, I have been having problems with my system locking to the point where I needed to press the reset button to recycle the box. Well, this happened again and this time things are not working properly after bringing the system back up. I have been able to start networking services and I can start KDE desktop but none of my X applications will run. Now I have several questions: 1) What type of problems could have been created by an improper shutdown of the box? 2) Will reinstalling KDE fix this problem? 3) How do I go about figuring out what is causing my machine to lock up? bizzare font behavior

Hey all, Each time i boot my machine it seems to toggle between two interpretations of 12pt fonts. There seems to be a random patten for my computer interpreting fonts. One time it will be really, small, the next boot, it will have big fonts. The font configuration is the same (mostly size 10pt font in KDE2). But each time the computer boots, i have no idea if I'm going to be able to read the fonts on my screen, or if it's going to be too big. It's on a RH7.1 i installed few weeks ago. I have KDE2 running, and i have the graphical login window when i boot. Any ideas? Thanks, --Brad

Possible topic for the next meeting?

Greetings, I don't know whether there is a topic for the next meeting and it just hasn't made it onto the web page or not, but I figured I'd offer a suggestion to the group. Is anyone interested on seeing a presentation on the various DVD players that are available for Linux along with their setup. hardware support, and configuration, etc? I'm headed to the west coast next week for a 7-day Alaskan cruise, and I really need something to do for the 6-hour plane ride each way other than watching Top Gun. I'd be happy to do so, but I figured I'd ask the group instead of just mailing Andy as "installing and running a couple of apps in Linux" might be on the light side for a presentation. If people are interested and there's already something for this month, just let me know and I'll write something up. What version of the kernel and X? If you run xfontsel, can you see your font families in the family pulldown? It may be perfectly normal for your fonts.dir file to contain a 0. Mine does! However, this was the command used to generate it: /usr/X11R6/bin/mkfontdir -e /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/encodings \ -e /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/encodings/large . &>/dev/null I think the real information about the fonts are stored in the encodings directory. Wes AFAIK, with Type1 fonts, you need to have an entry for them in the matching fonts.scale for them to appear in fonts.dir from mkfontdir (this may or may not be debian-specific). From mkfontdir (1x): SCALABLE FONTS (this may or may not be debian-specific). From mkfontdir (1x): name, the file "fonts.scale" can be used to name the scalable fonts in the directory. The fonts listed in it are copied to fonts.dir by mkfont dir. They have a search engine, and entering Type 1 fonts should lead you to a HOWTO on how to do it. Have said that, two things need to happen: 1) X has to know where to find the fonts 2) The directory needs to have a special file called fonts.dir X knows where to look for fonts based on data in its configuration file, /etc/X11/XF86Config In there, look for one or more lines starting with FontPath You can just add a line, FontPath "path to your Type1 fonts directory" OR you can copy your fonts (both the .afm and .pfb files) to where the rest of the Type 1 fonts are, and dispense with editing XF86Config. By default, the Type 1 fonts are in a subdirectory of /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts OR if you are using a font server, you can edit another file instead. I won't cover that possibility. Check out the HOWTOs for more info. Having done one of the above, X should be able to find your fonts. The next requirement is to create or update a file called fonts.dir in the directory where your new fonts are now located. Red Hat updates fonts.dir for you at boot time automatically. Yours may as well. But you can create the file by connecting to the directory and typing rm -f fonts.dir && ttmkfontdir . Restart your X environment and see if your <program> can see your fonts. QPE has a settings app called Light & Power that can control the backlight. Make sure you install apmd and h3600-utils out of familiar also. I just wrote a little script for syncing: #!/bin/sh ntpdate my.home.time.server ipkg update ipkg upgrade RSYNC_RSH=ssh export RSYNC_RSH rsync -va --exclude=/proc / user@my.home.machine:/path/to/backup I think it'll just be a matter of time before there are KDE apps that can do real syncing with the qpe PDA utilities.
