Jason and I ended up riding the Lowell train at midnight to get home. Jason exited at N. Billerica, and the train sat idle for about 5 minutes. I wondered why. Suddenly, the conductor and 2 Billerica police officers boarded the train and walked past me to the rear of the car. One "gentleman" was escorted off of the train for offenses unknown to me. As the train left the station, I saw 3 police cars in the parking lot. The train proceeded to the Lowell station without further incident. Hi Andy. I guess if you are reading this, you made it home safely. I stepped off the train . . . and a bunch of us waited for the train to move forward to cross the tracks. Then the conductor indicated that we could cross infront of the train because the train wasn't going anywhere. When I crossed the tracks, I saw the first of three poliece cars . . . Eithere they were expecting a lot of trouble of it was a quite night elsewhere in Billrica. External Harddrive Cases and Such

Additionally, I can just do striping over my harddrives instead of RAID 5'ing them and increase the preformance (why not? hehe). I was thinking about doing the external harddrive case deal but for backup at least this doesn't seem like a good alternative, since the external harddrive is only $20 more and the external harddrive case is much more than that. In less you plan on buying four or more harddrives to swap into the case, its not really cost effective. As for the long run, an external harddrive case isn't viable anywho, since a couple years from now its going to be nothing compared to the new ones, plus external harddrive technology will advance and speed up tremendously; look at Firewire 800 right now, already out, and one sees that 'investing' in an external harddrive case just doesn't pay out. Just my $.02.

Well, I didn't get any replies, but I went and looked around a bit and found a "Speed Metal Box" at a local store, but which I didn't like because it required a wall wart to use. Plus, it didn' have a builtin fan, it relied entirely on convection only. So I ended up ordering (for a cheaper price!) an ME-320 5.25" enclosure with builtin power supply and USB 2.0 and firewire interfaces. I'll let people know how it works once it comes in. It will be holding a 120gb disk for backups and data transfer uses. I'll let people know how it works out. John

Laptop hard drive or full-sized? The lab I work in has a couple of these portable Firewire/USB 2.0 enclosures: http://www.cooldrives.com/25firmobexen.html It needs external power (there's a picture of the adapter on the page) only for plugging into the mini-Firewire connections (i.e. most laptop firewire connections), but works fine with a full-sized firewire, or USB without external power. Linux is about choice. I feel having my email on someone elses machine is worth the benefits it gives me. Some people may hold their email conversations muce more dearly than I. Those people could make the choice to do things a bit more difficultly and register a domain and run their own mail server. -Marc

Emacs' mail reader easily does this. A good friend of mine is an emacs user and has a single folder which he treats just like GMail -- search for what you want. It has saved searches (virtual folders) and all that jazz. Been around for a long ole' time. I'd bet a pretty penny there are quite a few other equivalents as well. Well I do run linux, but I like the way gmail does things. Gmail does email a little differently than most people not using folders, but the more I'm using it the more I'm liking it. If there was an email solution that I could install on my linux box that give the same filtering and searching and labels that google does, I'd use it. Not to mention by using gmail it's someon else's problem for keeping the network up and backing up my data. I've got plenty of linux boxes I use but most broadband these days still gives me trouble for reliability. Although I don't use Linux, at least not now I could not agree more. I think when I get a new computer this one is going to be used for Linux as by that time it should be easy enough for none technical people. GMail has to be one of the most rediculous things I have ever heard of. I think there must be a lot of server space available for anyone to keep all the nonsense that people send in emails. Wouldn't this discussion on GMail be interesting 10 years form now? I do enjoy reading the discussions on this link. Well, before seeing this email, I bought ANSI Common Lisp off amazon the other day and it just came him; reading through it now! I looked at a history of lisp somewhere (I think in a link in the Common Lisp Hypertext, of which I was directed to from reviews on amazon) and heard Scheme described as basically a Pascal equivalent of Scheme in the sense that it was designed to teach, not to use. Of course, knowing nothing about Lisp and its dialects, I believed this, having the new 1000-level CS class that teaches Scheme seem also to point in that direction; hearing your feelings concerning Scheme, however, makes it seem as though I have been misinformed (alas, the curse of the internet!). Well, I'm teaching myself Common Lisp now, anywho. The book I got was highly recommended, both as an introductory Lisp book and as a great reference for Common Lisp. The book is put out by Prentice Hall as part of there Series In Artificial Intelligence, and being that that is what drew me to teaching myself Lisp in the first place, seems like a good place to start. I'll check out one of the local university libraries here (I'm in lower Rhode Island, by the way) and see if I can pick up some of those books you've mentioned. Thank you all very much.

Whatever someone though useful was added. It's a big language, and the standard reference is: Guy Steele Jr. "Common LISP, The Language, Second Ed." Digital Press This book is too fat, legalistic, and repetitious to use as an introduction, but it is the final answer for disputes between language lawyers. The graphs of complex transcendental functions on pages 315-336 are almost worth the price of admission alone. An hour spent staring at the pictures is worth half a semester class of complex variable theory. -- Scheme was developed in the late 1970's by Guy Steele and Gerald Sussman (later to be authors of the Common Lisp manual and SICP respectively). The approach was exactly opposite to Common Lisp. They say: Programming languages should be designed not by piling feature on top of feature, but by removing the weaknesses and restrictions that make additional features seem necessary. By learning the Scheme version of Lisp you will encounter the maximum number of elegant new concepts with a minimum of mundane cruft. The base language may be lacking some of the library procedures you need to deal with the crufty real world of programming, but there are quite a few implementation that add those extras. The standard reference is the fifth "Revised Report on the Algorithmic Language Scheme" (R5RS), which is available from http://www.schemers.org/ (click "standards"). This is only about 50 pages. I recommend printing it out and memorizing it. If you are going to write much Lisp, you really want an editor that can balance parenthesis and indent code automatically. Emacs does that and more. In addition, Emacs is written in Lisp and can be extended and programmed by executing Emacs Lisp programs. Tim, Do you have windows on this machine? I have a similiar sound card for my laptop, and I find that if I leave the drive muted under windows, then I cannot unmute it under linux at all. It looks unmuted, but no sounds are made. If you still have windows, boot to windows and make sure the device is unmuted. Then boot back into linux and give it a try again. Windows file sharing does just that, it shares files. In order for remote CD Burning to work, you would need to be sharing out direct access to the drive itself, not just the files on it. Now that's not to say this is impossible, it just can't be done with Windows File Sharing/Samba. It is theoretically possible to create a program that listens on some network port and allows users to remotely upload ISO images and automatically burn them (or something similiar). Or maybe just watch a particular directory and burn any ISO image that shows up into it (once the file is complete. Not sure the best way to figure that out). Then you could use samba to put the files into the location that the program is watching. I've never heard of such a program, but maybe it's out there somewhere.. or if you want to work on your programming skills you can try creating one yourself. So, Generally, I don't ask for help in these matters, I just grind it out and figure out the problem, but I'm just stuck. I've got this nice shiny new dell here and everything works great, duel monitors, USB, gigE, the works, except for the sound. Looking in /proc/pci I see it shows the audio card as... "Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801EB AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 2)." Now, it shows the card as being supported and it looks like ALSA is loading a gackle of drivers (and I checked and they've been unmuted...) yet no sound. (Yes, I did check to make sure I had the speakers plugged into the right jack...) Has anybody had any experience getting this sound card to work? Note: It is integrated... Just last week I got a ViewSonic VP201B, and I love it (20.1" 1600x1200). I had a 19" ViewSonic, but in my opinion everything looks better on the new LCD. I just started using DVI, but havent quite figured out how to get it to work under Slack, just on Windows. I don't notice a big difference when using the DVI. I did end up buying the N6 HDTV Processor, which is not very good, other than that I am totally happy with my new monitor.

More degredation and ghosting is noticed going through my KVM switch, so I connected DVI directly from my "good" system to the LCD, leaving the KVM on the VGA input. The longer your cable is, the more DVI is going to help you. DVI is also nice because it skips the video card RAMDAC conversion for transport across the VGA cable, and conversion back to digital inside the LCD monitor. The nice thing about LCD sizes, is you actually get the full stated size in the viewable image.

It's tough for me to justify an LCD when $250 will get me a fantastic 19" flatscreen CRT that's leaps and bounds ahead of what I have now (hell, the no-name 17" flatscreen CRT that I bought for my second desktop for under $150 recently is miles ahead of the 19" in picture quality). If someone here can justify paying 3x as much for an LCD that could arguably be worse for gaming, I'd love to be convinced (and power consumption doesn't count). =) Brian J. Reminder: Upcoming meeting

HI Everybody, This coming Thursday, June 17th, will be our next WLUG meeting, to be held at the usual place at 7:00 PM. At this meeting, we have the unusual benefit of having two speakers. First, I will give a short talk about the "bootsplash" software and how it can liven up your session while the computer boots. You can read more about it at http://www.bootsplash.org. This software has been used by the last several SuSE Linux releases, but it also works with other distributions. If you want to jazz up your computer display while the machine boots, this is the software you want to install. After that, I'll give the floor to John Rulnick, who asked to address the WLUG memebership. John's short talk will be about a weekend program he is involved with launching at Bay Path College. I use the "HP Color Laserjet PS" printer at work where I have a bunch of people set up with a FILE: printer and Ghostscript as an alternative to Adobe Acrobat (they use the PDF-creation functionality only). generic windows printer driver for postscript?

I have a windows-only (sigh) program that prints maps. It doesn't have a print-to-file option, so I add a "file" printer in windows printer setup. Can any give me a recommendation for a generic (clean) postscript printer driver? My intent is to print to a samba file share on linux and review the postscript print file with gv to select specific pages. The HP driver doesn't make nice postscript. Thanks, Bill

CRT or LCD ?

HI all, My 9 year old Nokia 447X CRT monitor appears to be on its way out. At maximum brightness and contrast, I can't get a good picture. I'm using xgamma to crank up the colors, but that creates a washed out display. The picture size wavers and occasionally goes out of sync. I think I got my $1000 worth out of this monitor! At the risk of starting a religious war, I'm wondering if I can get some objective commentary regarding CRT vs LCD and any issues there might be with Linux. I would like a display that can do at least 1280x1024@75Hz and possibly up to 1600x1200@75Hz. I think that puts me in the 18" - 19" monitor category, which is OK with me (I have a 17" monitor now). I occasionally play games but mostly its text, websurfing, email, and some photo editing. Does the LCD quality degrade when using the VGA input vs. the DVI input (assuming that the monitor has both) ? Are there any major Linux related issues when using the DVI output of a video card ? email sending problem with comcast

HI all, This is driving me nuts...I still have that problem where I get intermittent failures while sending email, even after hard coding the IP number for smtp.comcast.net (they normally have 4 different IPs...I hard coded one to make debug easier). Does anybody know the SMTP protocol sufficiently that they could help me debug this problem ? I have ethereal traces - one when it works, and another when it doesn't. If I had a vote for this month, I'd say the first one would be an interesting experiment in organized anarchy ;+) -frank p ---Distro roundup:--- We could have a discussion about the strengths _and_ weaknesses of the popular distro's. My idea with this one is that your selection of a distro should be dependent on what you're looking for... stability and security vs. usability, ave-joe vs. IT / programmer, general vs. specific use (desktop vs. server) Of course there would be at least a little distro-evangelism, but as long as everyone is civil / respectable then it def would be "fun", and maybe even educational. ---Gaming / Relaxing with Linux:--- This might be good for the fall, when there's an influx of new students to the surrounding schools. We could go over some of the simple games on a default install of the common distro's / desktops. Touch on simple stuff like solitaire and also more complex like FreeCIV and even UT2k2. This would be a good lead-in to a LAN party at some point, too :+) ---How to effectively use the OpenOffice suite:--- I've personally always wanted to use it more often, but haven't taken the plunge, yet. It'd be neat to hear from a few people who use it on a regular basis and some stories about (in)compatibilities with the MS equivalent apps. ---Setting up a Content Management System for your website:--- A really nice way to setup something for non-programmers to edit web content, especially for volunteer organizations (oh yes, I'm talking from experience here). This could either be an intro to them in general with a focus / example of one in particular, or maybe a round-up of a few different ones and their strengths / weaknesses. Debian/Postgresql question

Hello, I'm working on installing Gforge(.org) on a server running Debian. I'm using "apt-get install gforge" using the packages on gforge.free.fr. I cannot get Postgresql to start. I tested it on my local machine and never ran into this problem. Any ideas would be great. My experience, exporting a commercial database can be tough.. Which database are you currently using. Their are some tools available to port from MS SQL Server to MySQL or Postgres. I prefer Postgres because it has the functionality of a "real" database (referential integrety, functions, triggers, etc.) although with MySQL version 5 some of these features are being added. (My machine has a DVD drive and a CDR.) So, if I just have a blank in the CDR, xcdroast tries to read the DVD & times out. The time out is quite long. Once I get past that, I can get to "Master Tracks" and I can then make progress. All in all, though, I made better progress with less frustration with using mkisofs & cdrecord directly. Go into setup and select HD Settings from the tabs above the window. You can enter the path to your image directory manually at the bottom, or click on Browse and you should see your directory tree. This is just to select the directory where mkisofs dumps the image it makes. Be sure that your user has permission for that directory. That is, if you can set it up for a non-root user. I don't seem to be able to do that with my latest installation. When you say "from" do you mean where you want to get the files from your hard drive that you want to burn to cd? That's not in setup, that's in Master Tracks (under Create CD). If you can't see your hard drive here, then I'd guess that there's a problem with the installation. HI all, I have an Adaptec 29160N which for reasons unknown refused to boot my hard drive directly. I put in the DVD and that booted, which then booted the hard drive, and Linux came up. Today, I decided to fix this problem. I updated the BIOS on the 29160N, thinking that was the problem. On the computer in the cellar, it successfully booted a 4.7GB SCSI drive. Success(!), or so I thought. When I put the 29160N back into the "good" computer, it wouldn't boot from any hard drive. I suspected that the 18GB and 36 GB drives might be too new for the 29160N. To make a longer story short, if "enable booting from CD" *and* "enable booting from disk" are both simultaneously enabled, no disk booting occurs. By turning off "enable booting from CD", one can succeed in booting from a hard disk. Stupid, idiotic firmware programmer from Adaptec ought to be shot... mouse scroll wheel

I did a new install of SuSE 8.2, and my mouse scroll wheel no longer works. Previous install was on top of 7.2. Current XF86Config mouse section is identical to the one that worked. It also works when I boot into debian. I've tried adding the imwheel command to .xinitrc, but that didn't help. Maybe I don't understand the -W option. What's a GPM fifo? Is that the script file that starts gpm? If it is, I tried that, and it didn't work, either. Also tried adding and removing gpm from run-level services. Any ideas? Thanks, Greg

Keeping the above in mind, I periodically get errors when sending email. The error is "authentication failure". However, if I immediately resend, it goes through just fine (sometimes after repeated resends). Note also that smtp.comcast.net maps to 4 different IP addresses. My theory is that the Comcast servers are not all using the same authentication method, and when I catch one that's not setup the same as my email program, I don't authenticate and thus cannot send email. I even have a static IP address, and the connection has been up for ~8 months no with NO issues. Assuming you pay for a static ip, they block nothing. (otherwise they block outbound SMTP to anywhere but their SMTP server, and various inbound ports). Vonage

We use Vonage at home. It works well for us. We have two lines, one for FAX and one for voice (the single Cisco box can support two lines). I did not have any form of tv subscription, so charter package was only high speed cable service.

I have & like Charter... I had the same MAC problem 0->O when they typed it in. I've had less than 6 outages at an average of about day each time over the past 3 years. Tech support can take forever to get to since you call into level 1 and they ask the "is your PC plugged into the modem?" questions, but the second-level support is pretty good. Speed is good. 768K base service, but some people are getting 1.5-2 in areas that aren't limited. For example, I click on an ordinary link, wait for sometime and *then* it finally starts loading which is fast, of course. So I got back to Verizon again. I have 1.5Mbits and I'm fine enough. Regarding the customer support, all I can say is they did not refund anything when I canceled my subscription in 20 days. Yeah, I ran 2.6.(can't remember patch) on my laptop for a while, and `ifconfig eth0' worked fine...One cool thing is that 2.6 did get pcmcia working, although it ran dog slow with some stuff...maybe I had to recompile a bunch of apps? If you like, they will even take care of the billing for you and give you 1/2 the charges. I think they would rather sell T1 service and let us take care of the local neighborhood. I've been using charter for almost 2 years now. Although about six months ago they seemed to be doing a lot of upgrades (the base service now is supposed to be 2MB/s), and we were losing connection almost every weekend, it seems to be much better right now. I did also find that a simple complaint got me free month(s) of service, as long as I waited on hold long enough, and complained loud enough. It ends up being ~$50 if you choose to rent the cable modem from them (you can obviously buy your own down at Best Buy, or CompUSA), but it's nice that they foot the bill to replace the modem if anything seems to be wrong with it. The main thing I miss from DSL is a static IP, and a TOS that is server-friendly. i was talking with a guy who claimed comcast provided great cable service in worcester and was basically way better than anything dsl could offer (i use speakeasy myself and love it). seeing as how he is a non-computer person, i took his opinion with a large grain of salt ... it did get me wondering though as ive never used comcast in worcester myself, just in holden (and it sucked a lot), how have other people got along with comcast here ? looking for the standard fare, speeds/tech support/response times/etc... -mike

SuSE 9.1

HI everybody, I've received my copy of SuSE 9.1 and I've gotten it installed on my laptop. Here are my thoughts so far. 0) SuSE 9.1 comes on 2 double-sided DVDs and 5 CDs. There are 64 and 32-bit versions, so one must used the proper side of the DVD. 1) It took 2 hours to upgrade from SuSE 9.0 to SuSE 9.1 on my 1 GHz Sony Vaio laptop using the DVD. That seemed long to me. 2) It uses the 2.6.4 kernel. One new feature of that kernel caused me some temporary grief since I didn't understand what it was doing. The "subfs" filesystem type is used for removeable media. The user doesn't need to mount any CD or floppy, just put in the medium and reference it with "ls /media/ floppy" or whatever. The operating system figures out that the medium isn't mounted, mounts it, carries out your wish, and then unmounts it. Sometimes, I find this a bit annoying, but perhaps I'm just not yet used to it. 3) The ACPI power management on my laptop now actually works! Well, it works for the root user, anyway (kpowersave). I actually got about 45 minutes on a battery (instead of 10). The PCMCIA wireless card really suck the life out of the battery when used! I'm diving into the code to figure out why kpowersave won't work for J-random-user. There's probably some executable that needs setuid root or some such. I suspect I can be more agressive about power saving to get close to 60 minutes out of it. 4) I said "bye-bye" to the ide-scsi module, especially after reading some notes about Linus' opinion of that module and the author of cdrecord. Things work fine without it. 5) Sound works great after one simple command. 6) I got wireless, grub, the printer, the hard wired network, and even (I think) the onboard modem working very easily. I've never had the onboard modem working previously. 7) The network devices are a little weird in 2.6. There isn't an "ifup eth0" or "ifup eth1" like there used to be. On my system, its "ifup eth-id-00:00:00:00:00:00" (fill in your MAC address). Once its up and you see it with ifconfig, the "standard" ifdown command works as always. 8) SuSE 9.1 comes with KDE 3.2.1, with which I haven't yet played. Is anyone of you using Microsoft SQL Server 2000 that of course run on Windows 2000 Advanced Server where the developing is done in Linux with its integration such as php and apache. It appears that I have some hardware issues. The box is an older PII that was rescued from the basement and put back into service. After pulling the plug and restarting it, the Ethernet card failed to initialize and the boot process hangs with trying to create /var/log/boot.msg. I guess I should have looked at that before asking for help.

System won't shutdown

Hi, I have a computer with SuSE 9.0 installed. When I run shutdown -h now it starts the shutdown process but then hangs immediately after running /etc/init.d/halt.local2 done I can hit the carriage return and am left at the console with the system running. The relevant part of ps x at this point is. 296822 ? S 0:00 2 /bin/bash /etc/init.d/rc 0 296899 ? S 0:00 2 /bin/2sh /etc/init.d/rc0.d/S20halt start What could be preventing this machine from shutting down? Thanks, Mike

As far as I know the application closest to Dreamweaver/FPage in kin might be the Mozilla editor as a WYSIWYG editor. Creating web content with Linux

HI everybody, I gave my "Introduction to Linux" presentation to a group of Internet professionals in Hopkinton last night (http://www.ip495.org) I was asked a question which I could not definitively answer since I am not a creator of web pages. The questions are: What tools are available on Linux for creating web content? Is there something akin to FrontPage for Linux? Sure, for simple HTML, any text editor will do. I've even used OpenOffice, but it feels crude to me (maybe I just don't know how to use it properly). GIMP could be used to create still images. Beyond that, I'm lost. Friends, Can you tell me to sniff detail informatstion using snort in linux in order to get sent and received information through my gateway. I have a firewall with snort installed, can I get details informations sent/received by my users where they are usig MSN Messanger, Yahoo Messanger, webmail, Outlook, etc ? Things I've done, just make a background precess and write it into file with snort, but the result is not so complettely as I need. How Can I sniff it so I can get detail information sent/received ? By default, the program will try to resolve the name given, and choose the appropriate protocol automatically. If resolving a host name returns both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, traceroute will use IPv4. Invoking the program as traceroute6 is the same as using the -6 option. -F Set the "Don't Fragment" bit. This tells intermediate routers not to fragment the packet when they find it's too big for a network hop's MTU. -f first_ttl Specifies with what TTL to start. Defaults to 1. -g gateway Tells traceroute to add an IP source routing option to the outgoing packet that tells the network to route the packet through the specified gateway. Not very useful, because most routers have disabled source routing for security reasons. -I interface Specifies the interface through which to traceroute should send packets. By default, the interface is selected according to the routing table. -m max_hops Specifies the maximum number of hops traceroute will probe. The default value is 30. -N concurrent_hops Specifies the number of probe packets sent out simultaneously. Sending several probes concurrently can speed up traceroute considerably. However, when specifying a number that's too large, the destination host will start to throw away random ICMP responses (if it implements ICMP rate throttling), and traceroute will be unable to detect the final hope reliably. The default value is 6. -n Do not try to map IP addresses to host names when displaying them. -p port Specifies the UDP destination port base traceroute will use. When sending its UDP probe packets, it will send them to port + hop - 1 for each hop. If there are ports in this range in use on the destination host, traceroute will not be able to identify reliably when it has reached the destination host (probes will appear to time out). The default port is 33434; you can use -p to change this to a different value. -t tos Set the IP Type of Service (TOS) and Precedence value. Useful values are 16 (low delay) and 8 (high throughput). Note that in order to use some TOS precendence values, you have to be super user. -w sec Wait for sec seconds before sending the next probe packet. Note that unlike older traceroute versions, this implementation will transmit several probe packets in parallel, for different hop values. However, it will never send more than 1 packet per hop value at the same time. -q numqueries Sets the number of probe packets per hop. The default value is 3. -r Bypass the normal routing tables and send directly to a host on an attached network. If the host is not on a directly-attached network, an error is returned. This option can be used to ping a local host through an interface that has no route through it. -R Set the loose source route option on outgoing packets, asking intermediate routers to record their address as the packet passes. This can be useful if you want to find the address of an intermediate router that has been configured to not respond to traceroute packets. This feature hasn't been implemented yet. -S source_addr Chooses an alternative source address. Note that you must select the address of one of the interfaces. By default, the address of the outgoing interface is used. -V Print the version and exit.

Hi Greg. I have a similar situation at home. When I need to do a traceroute I use the -I switch (e.g. traceroute -I www.google.com) which uses ICMP echos instead of UDP datagrams. I believe that ping uses ICMP requests by default, which may explain why you can ping outside your network. The modem has a router built into it, and even with its internal firewall turned off, the only output I get from a traceroute is the router'r IP number and times, followed by 29 lines of stars. I tried shutting down the network and using my dialup account, and traceroute works fine. I know it's not the firewall on my machine, because it makes no difference if it's on or off with the dsl, and traceroute works on the dialup with the firewall running. (Yes, I did remember to change the default path in the firewall config from eth0 to ppp0) Any ideas? Is this likely to be something built into the dsl modem, or something with Verizon? Or might I have something screwed up in my network setup? I can ping my other computers and I can ping out to the internet ok. Thanks, Greg Avedissian

Frank, 10.14.36.204 is the server IP. BTW, it gives that message even though I use the hostname on the ssh command line. I ran ssh -v, and found the problem... I needed to modify known_hosts2, not known_hosts. Silly mistake on my part, although the documentation does not mention known_hosts2 Thanks for the push in the right direction. Is '10.14.36.204' your client or your server? First reaction is that you should just replace the old ip with the new one in the known_hosts file, though maybe it's no that simple. It could be that either your client doesn't want to connect to a server it doesn't know about, or your server doesn't want to accept connections from a client it doesn't know about. It could be changes needed in your ~/.ssh/known_hosts on the client or /etc/ssh/ssh_known_hosts on the server. Can you be a little more explicit about exactly what you are trying to do? I'm having a problem with known (or unknown!) hosts since changing the IP address on a server. Server info: Redhat 8.0 ssh -V: OpenSSH_3.4p1, SSH protocols 1.5/2.0, OpenSSL 0x0090602f Client info: Redhat 9 ssh -V: OpenSSH_3.5p1, SSH protocols 1.5/2.0, OpenSSL 0x0090701f When logging into the server, I'm getting the following message: RSA host key for IP address '10.14.36.204' not in list of known hosts. I've played around with ~/.ssh/known_hosts (even renaming it), but I still get the message.
