The only kink I found after install was that it put a savedefault entry in my grub menu.lst, which rendered my system unbootable. Easy fix: delete the savedefault line, which you can do from the grub menu at boot time if you have to. I like kubuntu. The forums/doc are excellent. One thing I found is that, if you're used to all the extra software bits that come with Red Hat, you'll have to get used to kubuntu not having them. I came from Mandrake, and it didn't take me very long to figure things out and work around the missing bits -- it's mostly a matter of installing the packages that don't get installed by default. My advice: get Synaptic as soon as you're done, it's much better than the KDE version that comes with kubuntu. And you have to get used to the Debian packages (when you go to install other stuff on your own, you'll find that .deb packages aren't nearly as ubiquitous as .rpm ones). Once you get kubuntu working like you want, it's very stable, and very nice. I like it's release cycle better than Mandrake's -- the reason I switched was to get KDE 3.4 without sacrificing stability. Mandrake's latest official release doesn't support it, and the latest club release at the time was painfully buggy on my box -- I actually had to blow the whole thing away, and that's when I switched to kubuntu. Bad x11 package from fedora

I installed a bad package from fedora over the weekend. xorg-x11.i386 6.8.2-1.FC3.45 There are a total of 13 packages that are associated with the upgrade. This also affects FC4. There is a beta fix that I hope to test tonight. DO NOT INSTALL THESE PACKAGES. If you have already installed the bad packages and are experiencing console lock-up, you can fight your way back by booting to single user mode, setting inittab to runlevel 3. At least your system will work at that level. Next, if you have another machine, you can get the old packages from fedora and downgrade (with the "--oldpackage" option). You'll need the vendor/product info, which from your log is 0xd7d/0x1600. I filed a bug with redhat: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=168631 I did not file one with xorg because this looks like the X software did not change -- it looks like a change by the fedora team caused the problem for me. USB Flash Drive on RH 9

I'm not really fluent in device stuff, but I just configured a RH9 machine for a project, and was trying to offload some config files to a flash drive. After searching, I added to fstab: /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb_flash vfat noauto,user,rw,umask=0 0 0 and did a mkdir /mnt/usb_flash as root here's the log ... only partially recognized ... did a modprobe usb-storage after the "not claimed by any active driver" message...removed and inserted several times... umount obviously not recognized. failed graphics

Thank god for mutt... My motherboard integrated graphics died this evening. It still works in console mode (have to boot to init 3), but when I try to start graphics, or go to init 5 -- caput. What I see is a most of the firmware boot (e machine logo) with fritzed colors in a band across the top -- about 15% of the screen. I was wondering if I could just add a new card and have that work. To do that, I suppose I'd have to find a way to disable the motherboard graphics card Any ideas? If this seems like a good idea, can you recommend a reasonable graphics card? I'm not a gamer. The most graphics-intensive thing I do is watch a movie. TIA, Bill
