"Invalid data track crashes windows" part of me thinks it would just work, since at no point would you be automounting an invalid ISO filesystem. On the other hand, it might be an invalid TOC, which means you might have to send cdparanoia some options. But if the CD works in a CD player, the TOC must be valid "enough" to point to redbook data that can be ripped. -Chuck

Attorney asks son for advice on breaking DMCA

Now that I have your attention (almost), my Dad recently bought one of the so-called copy-protected audio CDs and he is unable to rip it. As he regularly uses both a Rio while running and has a Rio receiver hooked up to the downstairs stereo, that's a real pain. I haven't looked at the CD myself yet so I don't know if I can use the Sharpie-over-the-corrupt-data-track trick, but has anyone else run into this and come up with a good solution? There's been a million Slashdot stories on the problem with no real resolution that I can find. I figured there would be an answer on this side of the pond if nothing else, but a Windows workaround would work too. Any ideas? My suggestion was, of course, to return the CD and write a nasty letter to the company about selling something labeled as a Compact Disc that does not conform to the Red Book standard, but that doesn't really fix the problem. It doesn't need to be PostScript--you can use ghostscript on your Linux box and print HPGL to the printer over port 9100. WPI uses mainly HP's in this manner. I recommend ifhp as the print filter, since it natively supports port 9100 printing and has some other neat features (like displaying the username of the person printing on the LED panel of the printer). -- Charles R. laser printer?

I'm considering getting a laser printer (I'm tired of buying all those ink jet cartidges that my kids burn through), and I'm interested in recommendataions for low-cost models. (I'm running RedHat 7.2.) HP has a model (LaserJet 1000) for $250 retail. It has a USB connection that the HP web page says is for "window only". ("Non-Windows based operating systems will not be supported.") Any suggestions? TIA, Bill

The modprobe did the trick - firewall (with a couple minor messages) and masquerading came right up. Then it took over an hour playing with the firewall which no longer allowed DHCP handshaking to occur (probably behaving right now, was acting wrong under RH7.0) so that I could access mail on this laptop (all the desktops have static IPs) I do plan to switch to IPtables, but I wanted the luxury of learning it first. Thanks to all, especially Charles-- I'm 99% up and definitely functioning again. Many installs of RHL 7.3 will add both ipchains and iptables. It could be that iptables is running instead of ipchains. I believe that both are actually compiled as modules so you might need to rmmod the one in order to use the other. (I've ususally had the reverse problem: I prefer iptables and usually have to unload ipchains in order to use it. In the init scripts both are 'by default' set to S08ipchains and S08iptables, so ipchains loads first. ) On Tue, 3 Sep 2002, Charles R. Well, I've got the ETH1 and DHCP issues resolved (Thanks, Charles). Did not need to do anything with modules - had misinterpreted the install dialog and ifcfg-eth1 had BOOTPROTO=dhcp. eth1 should have been static with DHCP running from there. One unresolved issue - when I issue an IPChains command, the first time I get "IPchains incompatible with this kernel" and thereafter "IPChains protocol not available". The IPChains command is there, as for example "ipchains -h" works. But I haven't got masquerading or firewalling yet because of this.
