Has nothing to do with subscription service, I just suspect you have an old old old install which needs to be cleaned up. As I recall, you were upgrading from ubuntu 18.04 right? So I suspect you might have some old packages installed which are holding you back. If you can, do: dpkg-query -l > /tmp/packages.txt and then email me or the list the file as an attachement. I can look it over and give you suggestions on what you maybe remove. Good luck! John

Ubuntu 24.04.1 annoyance (thunderbird)

I am porting my (limited) stuff to Ubuntu 24.0.1 My ram had another failure and Ubuntu 22.04 entered into a state where I could not install or uninstall any thing. I did different things to repair this. I had no luck in fixing this. I decided to get thundebird Email working and I hit a suprise. I do not get a visible Thunderbird icon when I installed thunderbird. It also seems to be already installed (In installed the optional ëxtras¨when I installed Ubuntu). I had to fix the desktop icon by commenting out NoDisplay=true in a copy of the file thunderbird.desktop that I moved to ~/local/share/applications. I wonder if this is partly due to this being the type of application that would be supported by the subscription service.

Hi, again -- Tried to make it to the last meeting but was abducted, again. Most of the old equipment I had at work is gone. I was told to clear out the room and they found a STEM teacher at a local school who took it. This is what's left: Synology RS2416+ rackmount NAS w/ (2) RX1217 expansion units, AC + SAS cables - (36) 3.5" bays total (3) Dell PER805 2U rackmount servers (dual opteron) - w/ 1 set of rails, several new 2.5" SAS spares Dell PER300 1U rackmount server (dual xeon) - w/ rails, and a bunch of 3.5" SAS HDDs (pulls and new) Dell PER415 1U rackmount server (opteron) - w/ separate H700 HBA+cables, may have 8TB SATA HDD pulls installed (?) (I was unable to figure out how to make this thing do RAID10; the adaptor itself is worth something) Various 3.5" HDD pulls of various brands and sizes from 250GB to 2TB (2) Dell docking stations with AC adaptors Dell dock/monitor stand w/ no display panel (3) Dell monitor stands w/o panels Best offer. conserver

Guys, Patrick and I were talking serial ports for systems so you can access their console, and using Digi CM32 network serial concentrators to give access to multiple systems with telnet to specific ports. Then I mentioned an fantastic tool called 'conserver' which I use to manage a bunch of remote systems. Really works well. https://www.conserver.com/ So you do have to configure it (and I can help if you run into problems) but what is really gives you is the ability to do: console <name> and it will connect you to a console for a specific host. That can be a local serial port (which is where conserver started, using Cyclom-Y or -Z serial cards!), or an ipmi port, or a telnet connction to a remote port on a serial port concentrator, etc. So instead of having to memorize details, you just know names. And it offers loggins, access controls, multi-person access at the same time (one writer, many readers). It's not sexy, but when you need it, it really rocks. John
