Let's not be stupid.. Moving the meeting to the 28th.

John texted me this morning that there's a nor'easter on the way. The weather people, who are using Linux to run the large models are predicting heavy rain and winds, localized flooding, etc. I care more about the members of this group than keeping to a schedule. I think it makes sense to move the meeting to the 28th.. Stay safe everybody! Tim. -- I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their constituents as "consumers".

Hey Everybody! We've got a meeting this week! Date: May 22nd Time: 7PM Location: Technocopia Virtual Location: https://meet.jit.si/WlugMA Topic: Mini-PC.Long time WLUG member John Stoffel has graciously agreed to show off his new, small but mighty desktop. We'll put it through its paces with a couple quick demos and tests. We'll likely get OpenWebUI running on it, as well as Cadoodle. I recently started (trying!) to use a glove80 keyboard so I'll bring that along so people can give it a try as well. As usual, we'll head off for dinner afterwards to keep the conversation going. This way people could sit down at any system, login and their environment was just there. Now with everyone having laptops, I think most colleges have gone away from big computer labs any more. But keeping your files safe is tough. iCloud, OneDrive, rsync, etc have helped, but I'm not sure what the real answer is here. This could be an interesting topic! John

Next month meeting date, some input needed.

Next Month on the 2nd and 3rd Thursdays I have conflicts. So.. the next possible Thursday would be the 22nd.. Another option is that we shift the meeting to Wednesday for this month on the 14th? I know that isn't an "Free Hack" day at Technocopia, but I think we can work something out. What would people like to do? I mostly agree with Frank, especially for networks run by organizations whose primary business is not supplying network connectivity or public cloud computing to others. However, these days, IPv6 pretty much Just Works(tm), by default, out-of-the-box, on all general-purpose operating systems and you may not even realize you are using it. If you have Comcast Xfinity service and you are using their provided gateway router, then you are likely using IPv6. If you have Verizon Fios, same thing. If you have a cell phone, same thing. If you are using your own router and haven't configured it for IPv6, try OpenWRT with DHCPv6-PD. Go to https://whatismyip.com/ and look. On your cell phone, try with Wi-Fi turned off and then try again with it on. You can also try "ping google.com" (on Linux at least). If you are doing cloud computing, you can either pay for public IPv4 addresses, or you can get public IPv6 addresses for free. For special-purpose systems like IoT/smart home devices and such, they may still be playing catch up. Or they may not care much about implementing IPv6 because they run in a "closed" ecosystem where they control the only servers their devices talk to. But they might start caring now that cloud providers have started charging more for IPv4 addresses. But at this point it is more of a "who cares" situation for most people. The consumer shouldn't care. It makes good business sense to at least understand if you can gain a competitive advantage somehow by using IPv6, either by saving money, making a business model/product/service possible, or whatever. That's why the cell phone companies did it. Re: Reboot required questions

Doug, Sorry for the late reply. Been super busy. Answer to Q1: The laptop is from 2010. It's a Lenovo Think Pad T400. I use it more as a mobile machine. The little data that I want to keep is backed up. The hard drive is an old spinning platter. Answer to Q2: I had no worries of losing any data files. My only concern was that I did not know if a total shut down (as opposed to a reboot) would corrupt the OS and force me to reinstall it. Further trivia: As far as the machine is concerned, it still runs quite well. It's only quirk (that I may have mentioned some time back) is that the DVD drive pops open at random times.
